That wasn't Izumi in the drinking photo with Hoenhiem. That was a young Pinako. Also Sam I think you are overthinking what the whole human transmutation revelation means. Ed basically said it. The undeniable truth is you CAN'T bring the dead back to life. Alchemists however still believed it was possible some way they were always just "missing something." But it's proof between Ed and Izumi that it's not possible. It never was. The reason there is a physical body that shows up is because they put all the things that make up a human body including their own blood into the mix. But just like the narrator asked at the beginning of the episodes for a while "What could equal the value of a human soul?" The answer at least in FMAB is nothing. There is no equivalent exchange for a soul. So you create a body/vessel during human transmutation but no soul inside. EXCEPT in Al's case, he was put into the body on the ground instead. But the body rejected him.
