I agree that the trope is definitely tiring. Tends to feel very forced/ self gratifying (looking at you japanese novels and anime). The caveat is that alot of "ancient" cultures have a precedent of nobles having harems/concubines. Also, I personally don't think it would detract from the story IF it opened up to include Xiailan.

honestly, harem motifs in xianxia are tiresome. I liked this series because of the devoted love between Jin and Meimei. Harems and trouples are unrealistic and dumb.

@Robert Adams, Lu Ri thinks Xiulan is "aesthetically pleasing." He totally misses the fact that she's stunningly beautiful. No way can they be an actual ship -- Lu Ri is Ge's "good egg" and will do what he's supposed to, marry his granddaughter and produce the requisite heir or three. Just not an achievable ship!

Honestly, I thought the harem characters in this story were the most xianxia, Bi De and Lu Ri, that monogamy was for Jin, and another character should be found that is worthy of Xiulan, but so far none are suitable, Lu Ri could be but with the appearance of Xiao Su Ge, she will be his main wife, Bi De has Rizu, Tarhan is still missing, others do not catch my attention so the only ones worthy of lan lan are mei mei and jin.
