The eight figures stirred in their chairs, consciousness returning in waves of confusion and disorientation.
Silas Tate was the first to fully wake, his head snapping up with a gasp. His Wolf mask had slipped down around his neck, leaving his face exposed—middle-aged features, expensive dental work, the kind of face that appeared on Forbes covers.
"What—where—" He tried to move and realized his wrists were loosely bound to the chair's armrests.
"What the hell is this?"
Around him, the others were waking in similar states of confusion. Miranda Lockheart (Fox) blinked rapidly, while Thomas Kord (Hyena) jerked against his restraints violently, testing their strength.
Helena Ashe (Serpent) came to more slowly, her breathing quickening as awareness returned.
Cole Bishop (Spider), Victor Sterling (Vulture), Chen Wei (Rat), and Thomas Blackwood (Crow) all woke within seconds of each other.
"Get these off me!" Kord snarled, twisting his wrists against the restraints. "GET THESE OFF!"
"Stop thrashing, you idiot," Blackwood said, "You'll just tighten them. We need to—"
The restraints on Silas Tate's right wrist suddenly loosened. Not broke—loosened, as if the material had degraded. He pulled his hand free with a grunt of effort, then immediately began working on his other restraints.
"They're coming loose!" he said. "The ties—they're breaking down somehow!"
One by one, the restraints failed.
Within two minutes, all eight were free, stumbling out of their chairs, helping each other with the last stubborn ties.
They stood in a small room—maybe fifteen feet by fifteen feet, concrete walls painted a dingy gray. No windows.
One door, currently closed. And in the center of the room, a heavy safe, maybe three feet tall, industrial gray, with an old-fashioned combination lock.
"What the hell happened?" Miranda demanded, "Where are we? How did we get here?"
"The champagne," Helena said, her hand going to her temple. "The Manager brought champagne. We drank it, and then..." She looked around at the others. "He did this. He drugged us. That bastard drugged us."
"He said something," Victor added, his mind working through the fog of sedation. "After we drank. Then we counted down together. Then-"
"The games?" Chen Wei's face went pale. "No. No, he couldn't. We're the organizers. We're not—"
A crackling sound interrupted him.
All eight heads turned toward the wall where a small, grainy monitor—the kind you'd find in a cheap security setup—flickered to life. The image was low quality, deliberately degraded, showing a face they all recognized.
The Manager.
His expression was calm and confident exactly as they remembered.
"Greetings," the Manager's voice came through a tinny speaker, slightly distorted. "And welcome to the Crucible's final season."
"You son of a bitch!" Silas shouted at the screen. "You're dead! You're fucking dead when I—"
But the Manager continued speaking, his voice overlaying the threats.
"I trust you are all wondering where you are and what happened. I can assure you that while your current confusion is understandable, it is the least of your concerns."
The eight billionaires fell silent, the reality of their situation sinking in.
"Now you shall undergo personally what you enjoyed watching so much," the Manager continued. "Three hours from now, the door to this house will open, and you all will be able to escape. Unfortunately, you are not the only occupants in this house."
Miranda's hand went to her mouth. Thomas Blackwood took an involuntary step backward.
"A fitting predator of your status has been released inside," the Manager said, "It will kill you. One at a time. Remember—only one person at a time. It tracks you using a chemical compound specially formulated and injected into your bodies while you were unconscious. The compound is metabolizing through your systems as we speak, creating a unique signature that the predator can follow."
"Oh god," Helena whispered. "Oh god, oh god—"
"The only way to save yourself is to find an antidote to the chemical," the Manager continued. "Several doses are hidden throughout this house. One is inside the safe in front of you. You all possess the combination to the safe. Think hard. The numbers are in the back of your mind."
Victor Sterling moved to the safe, crouching beside it, his hands already reaching for the combination dial.
"Now run and survive, my little lambs," the Manager said, and there was something almost gentle in that last phrase—a mockery of care. "Do remember: do not stay in the same place for too long, or the predator will find you. Tick tock. Tick tock."
The screen showed the Manager's face for one more second, and Silas Tate lunged forward, screaming: "YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO US! DO YOU KNOW WHO WE ARE? WE'LL DESTROY YOU! YOUR FAMILY! EVERYONE YOU'VE EVER—"
"Oh, I almost forgot to mention," the Manager's voice interrupted calmly. "This feed is one-way. Video and audio out, nothing in. I can't hear what you're saying. Though I imagine it's some combination of threats and pleas. Neither will help you."
The screen went dark.
Silence filled the room for three heartbeats.
Then chaos erupted.
"FUCK!" Thomas Kord kicked his chair across the room. "FUCK FUCK FUCK!"
"We need to think," Miranda said, but her voice was shaking. "We need to stay calm and—"
"Calm?!" Cole Bishop's laugh was slightly hysterical. "We're locked in a house with something hunting us! With the same thing we—" He stopped, the realization hitting him. "Maybe its the Croc. Yes, It should be. Killer Croc. The creature we used in the games. He set it loose in here with us."
"The antidote," Helena said, moving toward the safe. "The Manager said one dose is in the safe. We need to get it open. Victor, can you—"
But Victor Sterling was already examining the combination lock, his fingers hovering over the dial. "He said we have the combination. That the numbers are 'in the back of our minds.' What the hell does that mean?"
Silas Tate shoved him aside, grabbing the safe's handle and jerking it violently. "Move. We don't need combinations. We'll just—" He pulled harder, muscles straining. When that didn't work, he kicked the safe. Then punched it. The impacts echoed in the small room, but the safe didn't budge.
"Stop!" Thomas Blackwood grabbed Silas's shoulder. "You're wasting energy. The safe is built to withstand that kind of—"
Silas spun around, his face contorted with rage and fear. "Then what do you suggest, banker? We sit here and wait to die? Open it with our fucking 'minds'?"
"The clue," Miranda said, forcing her voice to stay level. "The Manager said we have the combination. That it's in the back of our minds. He must have told us at some point. Maybe during the sedation? Some kind of hypnotic suggestion?"
"I don't remember any numbers," Victor said, still crouched by the safe. "Nothing. My mind is blank."
"Mine too," Chen Wei added.
