As others have said, Aizen killed him. It was actually revealed in one of the novels that early on, Tosen actually asked Aizen to kill him if it ever looked like he would turn and actually join the Soul Reapers for real. So yeah, Aizen killed him, but he actually did it out of respect for Tosen's own wishes, as expressed to him many years previously. I only mention this because I seriously doubt that this particular revelation will ever be shown in anime form, but even if it is, it's a minor spoiler that will not be likely to be televised in the next couple of years at the least.

This was one of many moments lightly censored in the anime. As the man Quelz himself said, Aizen killed him with his reiatsu. The reactions of Hisagi and Komomoura were supposed to be the tells there, but i agree it's not obvious in the anime. That being said, it's still not a spoiler lmao.
