With Boruto I think it could be said that the manga-based episodes are great, while the anime canon episodes are variable. Some are great, some are not, and many depend on just how invested you are in the characters and development they focus on. In short, your friend I think is right in recommending you at least try to watch the anime canon and see how you feel about it.
