Yup. They actually censored a LOT of things in the anime towards the bigger fights. If anyone hasn't read the manga it'd worth a search. You'd be surprised lol

They also censored the scene where the 8th Espada (Szyelaparo) ate his minion, in the manga he eats flat out eats it, here they turned him into energy to make it seem less gory.

You described Kubo's intentions well when it comes to Orihime, many narrow-minded, basic viewers tend to rag on her character because she doesn't do much combat-wise. The thing is, is that aspect is intentional most manga artists try to make every main character "capable fighters" but in reality, everyone isn't made to fight in that way...it's important to understand that you can be useful in other ways, the message told with her characters is to do what you can to the best of your ability (tho she hasn't quite reached that phase I guess).
