Actually, he didn't see her looking in the mirror. Not that he would know that it'll help of course (after all it's Kayaba that designed the engine, and Asuna spent 2 years surviving in it), but all he saw was Asuna being sad hiding her face, which was her faking the sadness to carefully look into the mirror unnoticed, using opportunity that he was trying to make her feel bad.

yes he saw her looking in the mirror but how is he supposed to know that the pixelated field he put around it doesnt work in the mirror?
