When speck was going to shoot hanayama and he had a flashback to bakis dad, it was because back in the old series he had a fight with him. He felt the nostalgic feel of "I am truly close to death" and that gave him the desperate second wind.

Imo watching older baki makes you like the characters a little more, because you know them a bit more and get a bit more of backstory. But it doesn't impact how cool the fights are, and you can still follow along so its fine not watching the older one imo :p
