In the novel kirito did party up with asuma alot before she joined her guild they stuck together in early floors the anime rewrote it so he didnt see her much between floor 1 and her joining the guild

The army and the dragon knights were the two min guilds on eqrly floor clearinb both usless messes the dragon knights are elitists who dislike low level players and while the army help and acept low pevel players they have this goverment like atitude and hate beta testers both were competing to be the best and it held the clearing back the clearing really soed uo when the knights of the blood oath (asunas guild) showed up

The liberation front aja the army were one the two main guilds in clearing after floor 1 they lost too mny in floor 25 so the knights of the blood oath took over

Since it was brought up a couple times - here's explanation on the sword skills. Basically, you can have in your hands whatever you want and try to fight with it. If item is heavy and fast enough - it'll do the damage. Trick is - skills in this game have attached to them animation based Sword Skills, which take control of your body and move it at inhuman speed, thus making a whole ton of damage. They are followed by light effects and are unlocked as you practice the corresponding skill, such as one-handed-sword. If you switch to one-handed-axe - you will not be able to use one-handed-sword Sword Skills. To have animation based attack for 2 swords simultaneously - you need Kirito's Dual Wielding, but you can still use them without it. Although it should be noted that your stats have to allow for you to actually hold two heavy pieces of metal and wield them. Another important part is player input. Animation based attacks allow small deviations, for example by moving the body for extra momentum or precision where it doesn't interfere with animation. Experienced players can execute Sword Skills with better efficiency. Another - while animations are performed at inhuman speeds - it doesn't mean they are at the speed limit - virtual bodies take commands from the brain and can perform them as fast as commands are given, outside the limitations of physical world. This means, you can either outperform the Sword Skill and help the animation to be done even faster, or even perform the same set of motions as animation but without the Sword Skill, although it would take lots of practice in both cases. The first option - is what Kirito did in the boss fight, thus the exhaustion he felt.

FYI: you can wield two sword, it's just can't active the sword skill itself (when the swords glow and dealt more damage) if you not used dual wielding skill.

If I'm not wrong the system is helping in fights, like making sure that you hit or with the skills. So while yes you could just take a second sword, you would have to know how to use it and you would have no help and no specific skills
