Season 1 had 2 seasonal slots (seasonal slots are 13 weeks, you pay for that slot, even if you just do 12 episodes weekly). So they could have had 6 more epsiodes if they wanted to, but 20 is just what they went with to have optional breaks or maybe they also started later in the season to have more prep time, cant remember when it started tbh. Basicly taking risk into account which is pretty smart, unlike the MAPPA situation. Take JJK season 2 for example. They are running 23 epsiodes this season and already had 3 weeks of break/recap in between. Since they already maxing out they cant take additional breaks without taking contract penaltys from multiple sides into account, hence why MAPPA is in the situation they are currently in. During Covid it was easy for shows to delay since it counted as "force majeure" to avoid hence why a lot of shows got delayed during that time.
