You should 100% watch season two. Season one is slow and has a great climax but season 2 is all hands. After that they ruin it so just stop after S2 and read the manga.

While I agree that he should see for himself and if he continues to enjoy it he should definitely continue watching, the situations are very different. SAO had an enormous hate train in the west with countless people just jumping onto it because some anitubers 10 years ago build up their carriers by shitting on it, like they are still parroting the same lies and BS for over 10 years. Not saying that SAO doesn't have problems, but those are rarely actually addressed by those shitting on it, seen on it's own SAO is an okayish to good anime. The problem with the Tokyo Ghoul anime is a very different one. An inconsistent 2nd season that doesn't really know what it wants, it was supposed to have a different story but most of that was scrapped and then just inconsistently stitched together with Manga events. Then comes :Re that just ignores S2 and continues with the manga but the second part just tried to squish over 120 chapters of a psychological seinen manga into 12 episodes. Those are actual problems on a scale beyond anything SAO has, the ones clowning on it are more than anything fans of the Tokyo Ghoul manga that know what an amazing anime it could have been. While there is some of that with SAO as well, as the adaptation has some serious problems as well, it's on a whole different scale.

if you are interested in watching the rest of the anime it's definitely watch the anime first then, if interested, read the manga, the other way around will just ruin the anime experience for you. As someone that read the manga after the end of S1 (because I couldn't wait for more) I can't say how enjoyable the anime is after this point as anime only, but I can say pretty confidently that having the manga as comparison in the back of your mind will ruin it/severely lessen the enjoyment. That said the manga is definitely worth the read if you are interested in reading.

I would said watch season 2, then read the manga. Season 3 jumps straight from the manga, and season 2 is basically filler mashed together with some canon.
