A distillation would probably codistill the amine (if it was freebased). I think it is a potentially viable method.

The answer is kind of a yes and no. I only showed the reaction we are interested in, which is the reduction of the nitrile. It is pretty typical to do this in organic chemistry. (not show the side products and only the desired one and not have a true and proper balanced equation). The hydrogen gas is formed when the sodium borohydride reacts with the nickel chloride and when the NaBH4 reduces the nitrile. So it represents the "full reaction" of what we are interested in, but not the full reaction of everything that's actually going on.

Gotcha. So that equation doesn't represent the full reaction.

Okay, so maybe it is a little unclear, but it is in fact producing H2 gas and not HCl. I actually dont show the reaction that produced the H2 .What I am showing is the conversion of the nitrile to the amine, which is (kind of) a separate reaction. The HCl isn't really being "produced" in the reaction. The pH is slightly acidic (pH 5) and the basic amine picks up a proton and a Cl- that is floating around to form the HCl salt. Does that make sense?

When you added sodium borohydride, you it produces a lot of hydrogen gas but in the equation it's HCl.
