Three questions: 1. Why did you only rely on ventilation and not also use a mercury-rated respirator cartridge, e.g. 3M 6009? They are very easy to get. 2. Why didn't you use a teflon particle based grease, e.g. Krytox, for vacuum-proofing joints? It's slightly expensive but Amazon has it. 3. I guess this is not really a question but what did you expect to happen when liquid mercury at 260°C spilled into that plastic container? If my experience with solder is anything to go off from then it would have rather made things worse by setting the whole apparatus on fire...
