Nile Red

can you send me a photo of the T-shirt?

Lindy

May I ask, would you have a look at the molecular structure pics in Wikipedia especially under Chemistry heading for the LSD article and tell me if they are correct? I think that the chiral mark on #8 should be a solid black wedge instead of the dotted one. Searching google doesn’t really answer it. Why? Cause I got a T-shirt with the molecular structure on it and both wedges are solid. 🙃

Nile Red

hmm that's an interesting suggestion. They might not collapse, but they would still be destroyed by oxygen. It would also have to be done under nitrogen

Could you do a video of making KM32/Potassium Methylate. I use this at work as a catalyst to make biodiesel. I work.

How about ibuprofen or diphenhydramine?

Lindy

Will the reaction take place in a solution of something other than water, like a solvent with a high vapor pressure? What would happen if the solution was evaporated from around the crystals instead of pulling them out? I wonder if that would keep them from collapsing.

Nile Red

good point!

Nile Red

It does, but im not sure why. The solution wasnt super clean in the beginning, so some of it is just lead carbonate and other stuff, but still. The clarity definitely tracks with the crystals.

I'm actually thinking *maybe* picking up some of the individual "ferns" and dropping them in some resin might work...

Michael Aichlmayr

👍😎🎉🥂

Awesome video yet again. Happy new year! It would be a good idea to wrap some parafilm around where the stopper meets the glass to prevent the slow evaporation of the water over the course of the year.

Matthew Turner

If you wanted to try varnishing it again it'd probably work better if you lowered the "tree" into a jar of clear varnish for a while then take it out and let it dry, may or may not work but could be interesting to see if it works.

Awesome! I'm looking forward to the follow-up video in about a year ;-)

Nile Red

I did wonder if it were possible to slowly add a resin of some sort and have it displace the water.

Michael Aichlmayr

Very nice! Love the fern like structures!

Is it me, or is the solvent getting clearer from the top down, as the reaction occurs?

This gives me ideas. I wonder if there's a way to polymerize the solvent at the end of the reaction, or something. Maybe there's a way to mechanically replace the zinc acetate solution... humm

Very cool! Funny I was thinking about this exact same reaction and when you would post it when I was going through your older videos. Happy new year!

Also, when you take it out of the salt solution, it became "The Tree Stump of Saturn."

That's cool as hell. Thanks for that. Looks pretty dang good from where I'm sitting.

Nice!! :) What about in the future try other metal salts and other metals too? Maybe Zn + CuSO4 will make some nice Cu crystals? :) Red: And a happy new year to all! ;)

Thanks so much for these fantastic videos! Happy New Year!😊
