The beautiful blonde shrugged, looked back at me over her shoulder with warm, brown doe eyes, and murmured, “I missed you.”
“Oh, well in that case…” I quickly bent down, holding her tight, and captured her lips with my own.
She hugged my arms around her midsection and leaned herself back into me, increasing the pressure of her kiss. A moment later, she twisted within my arms to face me, grabbed my head, and kissed me even harder.
It wasn’t our first kiss of the day or anything like that. We’d kissed many, many times over the course of the afternoon amidst The BTC Epic Thanksgiving Orgy™. Yet those had been but mere pecks compared to what we were doing now. This was a KISS in bold and capital letters, with her tongue delving between my lips to tango with mine. And she let out a keening sort of wail of desperate need while her right leg reached up to wrap around the back of my thighs.
The motion set Sam slightly off-balance, but I tightened my grip and stood strong and erect to support her. She swooned a bit in my arms, and I wound up putting her into a slight dip to keep our mouths together while we kissed and kissed and kissed as if we were the only two people on Planet Earth and kissing was the only thing in the world that could possibly bring us joy.
I always kept a chair next to the grill so I could sit down and relax whenever not actively tending to the food. Drawing Sam against my chest, I gently sat down and pulled her with me so that she landed in my lap, all without ever breaking our liplock. And there we kissed and kissed and kissed some more, just a couple of teenagers in love.
There was no urgency to move things beyond kissing. The moment was highly intimate, but it wasn’t sexual. I enjoyed the simple pleasure of holding the woman I loved in my arms and feeling her love communicated to me through her mouth. And for a little while, it felt like we had all the time in the world.
But then I smelled the steaks start burning and abruptly had to jerk my mouth away. “Oh, shit!” I exclaimed as I started to stand. Thankfully, Sam was already slipping off my lap and got to her feet before I needed to unceremoniously dump her off me or anything like that.
I quickly lifted the lid on the grill, grabbed the tongs, and started flipping the steaks. I also flipped over the veggie skewers and then turned to face my girlfriend with a sheepish expression. “Uh, I hope the girls will be okay with ‘medium-well’.”
“They’re not bad. Just a bit crispy on the edges, but the insides’ll still be pink. My fault for disturbing you,” she apologized.
“Don’t apologize,” I told her sincerely. “The smallest bit of time with you - even if only an extra two minutes between medium and medium-well, is… well… well worth it.”
Sam pursed her lips and regarded me seriously. “Are you that hard-up to get any two minutes with me that you can?”
I smiled easily and nodded. Extending my arms, I drew Sam back into my embrace and squeezed her tightly while cradling the back of her head. And I murmured softly into her ear, “I’ll gladly take whatever I can get.”
Sam frowned and furrowed her eyebrows, mumbling back, “You shouldn’t have to.”
“Shouldn’t have to what?”
She raised her head to look up at me and then shook it sadly. “Shouldn’t have to go begging for whatever scraps of time I leave for you. It’s not fair to you. It’s not.”
I shrugged and told her plainly, “I always knew what I was getting into with this relationship.”
Sam’s eyebrows rose. “Did you really?”
I shrugged again. “We talked about this back in high school. We talked about this when we started school. And we really don’t need to talk about it again. You’re busy - I get it. You’re prioritizing your academics and your career - just like you always said you would. If you’re feeling guilty about that, don’t. I’m good. I’m happy with our relationship.”
“You’re not happy with our relationship.”
“I’m happy,” I assured her.
“How can you possibly be happy? The amount of quality time we spend together has been on an exponential decline since Day One. We stopped having Sam Saturdays. I can’t remember when we last went out on a date. And I’ve now crashed overnight at Adeline’s apartment three times without even bothering to call you to ask permission.”
“Because I told you that you didn’t need to call me and ask permission anymore. If you need to crash, you need to crash. It’s cool.”
“I’m neglecting you.”
“I don’t feel neglected.”
“I don’t prioritize you.”
“I don’t need you to prioritize me.” Rubbing both of Sam’s upper arms, I leaned down to stare straight into her soft brown eyes and said, “Just tell me it’s working. Tell me you’re an amazing academic success story. Tell me you’re acing your classes, impressing everyone in your Pre-Law Society, taking charge of that Writing Committee, and well on your way to making partner before you turn thirty.”
Sam blushed and waggled her head. “Well… kinda yeah… But I’m always so tired.”
“Being tired is to be expected. With your workaholic nature, you’d be tired no matter what you chose to do.” Holding her gently, I sat back down in my chair and drew her sideways into my lap. I kissed the side of her head and then continued, “But are you stressed out? Are you just barely treading water? Or are you swimming?”
“I’m swimming. I’m swimming,” Sam confirmed with a confident nod. “You wouldn’t believe how smart some of the others are - like they have a cheat code in their brain for case law. And everyone’s hard-working and competitive, but I’m definitely swimming.”
I gave her a warm smile and felt a touch of pride. “Then it’s all worthwhile.”
She smiled in reply and then turned to snuggle her back against my chest. Drawing my right hand into hers, she guided it beneath the hem of her jacket and then her sweater as well, and even her bra, so that it was palming her left breast in much the same way we often slept together. Idly, I rubbed her nipple for just a moment and then squeezed the globe while we both chuckled together.
“But I’m still tired,” Sam sighed. “Being the best at everything… it’s exhausting.”
“I know it is. I know it is. And we both know I’d be perfectly happy for you to ratchet down the pace a bit so you’d be a little less tired. But I also won’t be selfish about it. What’s important is: Are you doing what you want to do?”
Staring up into my eyes, my girlfriend took a deep breath, exhaled slowly, and nodded. “I am.”
“Then keep on doing it.”
“But I’m the one being selfish about it.”
“You’re not being selfish.”
“I’m not being fair to you.”
“You’re being more than fair to me. Need I remind you that I’m not exactly alone at night?” I lifted up the two thong panties still dangling around my neck, one pink and one green. Then I gestured vaguely towards the house, which was currently occupied by no less than six other buxom beauties with whom I was intimately familiar.
“I’m just scared,” she mumbled.
“Scared of what?”
“Scared that you’ll leave me.”
“What?” I blinked in surprise. “Why would you ever be scared of that?”
“Well… someone has apparently made it her mission to highlight just how little quality time I spend with you and how you deserve to be a much higher priority in my life than I’m currently making.”
I sighed. “I’m sorry about Belle. I know she means well, but she’s being overly abrasive, and I should probably thank you for not strangling her and turning tonight into another Santa Cruz. I haven’t done a good enough job of curbing her behavior. That’s my fault.”
Sam frowned. “You don’t need to apologize for Belle. Actually, Belle doesn’t need to apologize for Belle. She’s right: I haven’t done a good enough job of prioritizing you. I don’t deserve you - I really don’t.”
“Stop saying that.”
“It’s the truth. I don’t deserve you. I know you’re trying to make me feel less guilty for neglecting you, and I love you for it, but you can’t say I’m keeping up my end of our relationship.”
“You’re doing exactly what we agreed on before coming to college,” I reassured her. “Honestly, I think you’re just letting Belle’s antagonism get to you.”
“Belle’s not the only one pointing out that I’m neglecting you.”
I frowned. “Is that what you, Neevie, and Mari were talking about while the rest of us were upstairs playing Mario Kart?”
“No… no, not them. We were talking about… other stuff.”
“Then who else?”
Sam sighed and stared away from me for a moment. She waggled her head and then muttered, “Rachael may or may not have suggested that no self-respecting boyfriend would ever put up with the lack of priority and quality time that I give you.”
I rolled my eyes. “Rachael has never truly understood our relationship.”
“I know.”
“Do you?”
“I know that Rachael could never understand the complex dynamics of dating you while my friends are dating you at the same time, short of having her join The BTC as well.”
“Wait, what?”
“But she does have some experience with losing boyfriends who ultimately couldn’t put up with dating an emotionally distant woman.”
“You’re not an emotionally distant woman,” I reasoned.
“I’d like to think I’m not. Not yet, at least. And you would know, wouldn’t you? You grew up with the ultimate emotionally distant woman.”
“Grew up with the-- You mean Mother?!”
Sam sighed. “I don’t want you to end up resenting me the way I know you still resent her.”
“First of all: I don’t resent her.”
“Don’t you?”
“Second of all,” I continued without waiting, “Oedipus Complex jokes aside, I think you’re overblowing any similarities you might have to my mother. And it’s not like I’m living with deep-seated psychological scars about this.”
“So sure?”
“I’m sure.” I took a deep breath and focused on her face. “Sam: you have to know I’d never leave you. For one thing, how could I possibly even do that? I mean… practically. You live here, and so does everyone else. It’s not like I’d collect my stuff and move out.”
“Well… I mean…” Sam waggled her head. “In theory you could ask ME to leave.”
“Pssht.” I snorted. “What in the entire sum total of our history together would ever make you believe I’d kick you out? More to the point: I’d never separate you from your friends.”
“And what if I’ve been separating myself from my friends more than they deserve?”
I took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. “Well that you’d have to talk to them about.”
“How many times has Belle called me out now for never being around?”
“I lost count after a hundred.” I gave her a rueful smile. “If I can give you one piece of advice, though: slow down for Belle on your runs. Run with her; not in front of her.”
Sam winced and nodded. “Good advice.”
“But seriously: I’d never leave you over something so minor as you being busy, if that’s what you’re really worried about.”
“I wasn’t really worried about you leaving me, but I have to admit that both Belle and Rachael made me think about it for a minute. Enough to make me at least want to talk about it.”
“Then I’m glad we talked about it. And I’m glad to hear it was nothing more than that.”
“I do know you’ll always be there for me - know that you’ll still be there for me fifteen years from now if need be.”
“I absolutely will.”
“And yet…”
I arched my eyebrows, waiting for her to finish that train of thought.
“And yet… what will be left of our relationship if I wait that long?” Sam shook her head and then looked back at me over her shoulder. She clamped her hand a little tighter over mine, directing me to squeeze her breast more, and then she sighed. “Fifteen years? You’d welcome me back, sure, but you wouldn’t wait for me. I wouldn’t want you to wait for me. You’ll be married and have five kids by then.”
I blinked. “Five kids?”
Sam shrugged and then smirked. “There’s an Irish Catholic joke in there somewhere. Actually, depending on how many girls you’re still sleeping with, maybe eight or nine?”
“That’s not funny.”
“I’m not kidding. Neevie would toss her birth control and marry you tomorrow if you offered to intertwine your roots as formally as she already feels in her heart. Belle would, too.”
“That’s crazy.”
“A little crazy, I agree. But that’s admittedly coming from a career-minded girl who’s set her sights on making partner before she turns thirty, not settling down and popping out back-to-back kids.”
I nodded slowly. “Not everyone dreams of getting married and having kids. Tell you the truth: -I- don’t dream of getting married and having kids.”
Sam nodded. “I figured. You’re much like your mother in that regard.”
I dropped my hand down from Sam’s breast. It just felt… weird. “How is Mother? You still keep in touch with her, don’t you?”
“All the time. I called her for Thanksgiving.” Sam smirked as she twisted to half-face me sideways again. “When was the last time you spoke with her?”
I snorted. “Five seconds before she walked out the front door of this house after dropping me off to college.”
Sam gave me a wry look, shook her head, and sighed. “Your mother is doing well. She’s busy. She’s… She’s happy being busy.”
“I figured. New promotion. New role. A chance to build something brand-new and shape it through pure willpower. I’ll bet she’s having the time of her life.”
Sam blushed and nodded slowly. “Something like that.”
I sighed. “I feel bad for holding her back all these years.”
“You didn’t hold her back. She always knew she’d never make this move until you were out of high school and planned accordingly.”
“I suppose.”
“And she’ll be happier knowing you asked after her.”
I snorted again. “I doubt it.”
“I mean it. Your mother loves you.”
“I know she does.”
“I’m not sure that you do. She asks about you all the time.”
“Really?”
“So surprised?” Sam smirked. “What was that about you not resenting the emotionally distant woman you grew up with?”
“Well I still haven’t talked to her since she walked out the front door of this house.”
“You know phone calls can be made in two directions, right?”
I merely rolled my eyes.
Sam smirked again and then sighed. “Unfortunately, as we’ve already established, I’m not in the loop on everything going on in your life. But the stuff I know, I tell her.”
I nodded distantly, suddenly wondering what Mother was doing right now.
Meanwhile, Sam took a deep breath to collect herself. And rather than continue, my girlfriend silently leaned in and snuggled herself against my chest.
In the interim, I smelled that the food was just about done and gently tapped her shoulders to get her to stand up from my lap. And as I started grabbing the food off the grill and set them onto the waiting platters, I glanced at her to say, “There’s nothing wrong with choosing your career over starting a family. I told you that I wasn’t in any hurry to get married or start fathering kids - although I obviously enjoy ‘practicing’. I feel like I did just fine growing up on my own, more or less. And if I ultimately choose to never get married or have children, I won’t consider my life any less fulfilled.”
“What does make your life feel fulfilled?”
“This. Being here. For you.” I reached out to stroke Sam’s hair and then tilted her chin up to me. “Even if it means waiting fifteen years for you to make partner--”
“Hey, I’m making partner before I turn thirty,” she interrupted.
I chuckled and then corrected myself, “Even if it means waiting some hypothetical amount of time before you turn thirty, I’ll always be here for you. And in that sense, you really shouldn’t think of it as me ‘waiting’ for you. I love you, Sam. I’ll always love you. I pledged to be your ‘home’. That means you can come and go as you need. So what if you become a jetsetter traveling the world fifty weeks out of the year? Your home will still be there with a warm bed for the two weeks you do come back.”
“My home?” she asked, her eyes moist.
I nodded seriously and hugged her back to my chest. I stroked her hair. I kissed her crown. And then I intoned warmly, “Your home.”
