Holly and Alice were grinning at each other before returning their attention to Eva. Sam and Naimh watched with expressions of marvel on their faces. And I couldn’t help but grin the widest grin I could ever remember grinning as I witnessed a completely different side of Evelynn Ayako Kawatani than I’d ever expected to see, her voice absolutely soaring.
“// And there’s no time left for losin’ / When you stand they fall… / Comin’ down the world turned over / And angels fall without you there / And I go on as you get colder / All because I’m / Comin’ down the years turned over / And angels fall without you there / And I’ll go on to bring you home / All because I’m, All because I’m / And I’ll become… / What you became to me…”
Eva’s eyes closed as she bowed over the guitar. Automatically, her fingers returned back to the haunting melody that both opened and closed the song. But when it was finally over and the room had gone silent again, she took a deep breath, exhaled even more slowly, and finally went still.
The room burst into cheers. Belle was squealing something about how awesome that was. Sam exclaimed her surprise. And Neevie whined that Eva had never told us she could play.
But I was ignoring the girls and their praise. I’d slipped out of my seat and immediately gone to hug Eva.
Because something was very, very wrong.
And as soon as I turned Eva’s face to my chest, she buried her nose against me and sobbed her pretty little heart out.
