My Head Girlfriend had a contemplative look on her face, most likely overthinking the situation much as I was. I found myself trying very hard to NOT overthink the situation though, distracting myself with observation of the things going on around me.
A neighbor’s dog barked at us in passing, the noise muffled by the glass window he was trapped behind. Green trash bins alternated with blue recycling bins in a row by the curb awaiting pickup, the stench of week-old waste mingling in the frosty December morning air with the smells of car exhaust and another neighbor’s grass clippings.
The church around the corner was remodeling, with temporary chain-link fences erected around its perimeter. The dark green fabric covering the fences had been tagged with various layers of spray-paint graffiti. Vulgar words and images were sometimes easy to decipher, and sometimes not.
Students congregated at the Durant Avenue crosswalk by the residence halls. A tall kid in a navy-blue jacket had an array of dreadlocks artistically piled atop his head, interwoven with colored beads. The backpack of the girl next to him was half-unzipped, revealing part of a Differential Equations textbook alongside two spiral-bound notebooks.
When we reached our usual intersection, Naimh smiled at me prettily, putting up a cheery façade for my benefit without a trace of her previous contemplative expression. She gave me a quick kiss and then headed off towards the Biology buildings while Belle happily slid her small hand into mine for the journey that remained. Rather than take my hand from the other side, Isabela kept holding Belle’s hand on the far end, and the three of us continued onward.
In stark contrast to Naimh’s taciturn pondering, Belle and Isabela were happy to babble on like a pair of giggling girls (which, they were). Both seemed quite satisfied - more than satisfied - with our early-morning foursome. And I continued my silent observation of the outside world.
The wind rustled the tree leaves. Bantering students passing by in the opposite direction talked football. A janitor drove by in a golf cart before parking alongside a trash can to our left.

She then gave Isabela an equally passionate kiss before turning and bouncing off towards Chemistry. “It’s kind of a big deal,” Skylar muttered, slouching against the sofa’s backrest and crossing her right leg over her left. She planted her left elbow atop the armrest and then set her chin down in her open palm. “For one thing, I should know better than to tempt a guy into cheating on his girlfriend… or girlfriends in this case.”
Naimh snorted, “Matty’s already got a green light from us to bang you, if that’s what you’re worried about.”
Skylar smirked, shook her head, and repeated to me, “That isn’t our relationship. And I’m very sorry for putting you in that situation, but I’m quite appreciative that you didn’t feel inclined to peep.”
“It was no big deal,” I repeated affably, momentarily raising both hands up with fingers splayed. “I honestly thought the door-latch thing was an accident, and I was never remotely tempted to try and peep on you.”
The striking blonde arched a perfectly sculpted eyebrow. “Not remotely tempted?” She looked a little wounded.
“C’mon, luv,” Naimh encouraged teasingly, rubbing my shoulder. “Tell Sky how much ye was dyin’ to catch yer firs’ glimpse o’er spectacular nekkid body.”
I barked a short laugh and shook my head, still not quite believing we’d come to this point.
Perhaps I should start over from the beginning.
My exit from the E10 auditorium after class had been as routine as any other. Isabela walked out with me arm-in-arm and we met the most gorgeous thing I’d ever loved outside on the plaza. Isabela then gave me a passionate kiss goodbye before heading off to pick up Luna. And then Naimh and I waited at a nearby table for Skylar to emerge.

And when the statuesque English beauty finally emerged, we greeted her as normally as any other day.
Per routine, the three of us collected lunch and brought our takeout bags to Skylar’s apartment. I held Skylar’s bag while she unlocked her door and then used her right shoulder to get the wood unjammed. And before I could second-guess whether or not I should really mention yesterday’s little bathroom-door-cracked-open thing, Skylar took her bag from me and spoke up first.
“I need to apologize for yesterday,” she began out of the blue as she closed the door behind us and started walking over to the dining table. “I know you noticed that I’d left the washroom door ajar when I went to take a shower.”
I blinked. “You knew?”
“Knew that I’d left it ajar?” Skylar narrowed her eyes. “Or knew that you noticed?”
“Both, I suppose,” I replied.
Skylar pursed her lips and changed her takeout bag from one hand to the other as if she didn’t know what to do with it. Ultimately, she turned around to set the bag down on the coffee table and then dropped heavily onto her sofa. Meanwhile, I’d already set my takeout bag on the dining table, and I pulled out my usual chair and sat down rather than join Skylar. Naimh stood beside me with her hand atop my shoulder, and I covered her hand with mine.
After taking a deep breath, Skylar stated regretfully, “I didn’t mean to leave the door open.”
“So it was an accident?” Naimh queried dubiously.
“I was… flustered. I was stressed out. I was tired. I was horny. You’ve no idea how long it’s been since I got laid.”
I could feel Naimh leaning forward to make some witty crack about the two of us being happy to remedy that situation, but I dug my fingernails into her hand atop my shoulder in warning, and she bit her tongue.
But Skylar seemed to sense it anyways, and her eyes narrowed. “That isn’t our relationship.”
“We know,” I stated evenly.
“I needed a cold shower to cool down,” Skylar continued, closing her eyes and sighing as she bowed her head. And with her eyes still closed, she shook her head negatively while muttering, “I hustled off a little too quickly and perhaps didn’t shut the door all the way. It was only after I started getting undressed that I noticed the door was ajar. A girl should always know whether or not the washroom door is shut when there’s a man in the house.”
I chuckled. “So the girls tell me.”
“And my first instinct was to go shut it.” Skylar paused and winced.
Naimh smirked and led her, “This is where Matty would usually say, ‘I smell a ‘but’ coming…”
Skylar chuckled. “But… I admittedly wondered what he would do. I assumed he would be a perfect gentleman and refrain from ogling me. This is Matty, after all.”
“And he did refrain,” Naimh confirmed. “Matty would never peep on you.”
“I know he wouldn’t…” the blonde began, her voice trailing off as she got a faraway look again.
“But you find yourself wishing he didn’t refrain?” the redhead led her.
Skylar inhaled sharply but then exhaled quite slowly, averting her eyes. She took another deep breath to compose herself, and rather than answer the question, she turned to face me, stating evenly, “You were trying very hard to NOT stare at me, acting like you’d never noticed the open door, which is why I knew with certainty that you’d noticed the open door.”
“Was I really that obvious?” I asked with a wince. “I thought I’d done a good job of playing it off as normal.”
Naimh frowned. “If he was acting funny, wouldn’t you have assumed he DID peep on you?”
Skylar shook her head and then focused on me again. “You were trying hard to act normally, but you never got the kind of guilty, sheepish look on your face of a guy who’d peeped on me, so I knew you never actually went to take a look.”
“Well maybe I peeped and I’m just good at hiding it,” I muttered.
Skylar gave me a kind look. “You’ve never been good at hiding your true feelings. You’re an honest man, Matty, one of the few. It’s one reason why I like you so much. And I’m sorry for doing that to you.”
“It was no big deal,” I muttered, waving her off.

Skylar sighed and asked her somewhat forlornly, “Please don’t tempt me. I can’t do this. Not again.”
“Can’t do what?” I asked, a tingle going down my spine making me sit up straight in concern with furrowed eyebrows.
Skylar exhaled slowly and mumbled, “The same thing that got me disowned from my family in the first place.”

I enjoyed the subject matter of this chapter a lot. We’re finally starting to peeling back some of the layers that Skylar has kept to herself. The technical execution of the narrative was unfortunate. Too much experimentation with jumping back and forth in time (which I’ve mentioned not being a fan of before) made the narrative choppy and led to the repetition Wookie mentioned. I think the negatives far outweigh the positives when using that kind of flashback. Still can’t wait to see what happens next!
