It was late afternoon when the doorbell rang exactly twice and I paused my video game before getting up and padding down the short hallway from the living room. Eva rolled her eyes again. “As if I’d ever want to go through that again. Seriously, let’s just start playing so I can shoot some Skedar. Please?”
I nodded, grabbed my controller, and turned my attention forward. “Fire away.”

Slouched against the corner of the couch, zoned out to the game, almost lazily but expertly manipulating her controls to point and shoot and reload and switch weapons on the fly with smooth efficiency, Eva was good. I wouldn’t put her on a level with Alice or anything - still the top FPS gamer I’d ever known - but Eva definitely knew what she was doing. So far we’d pretty much only played Perfect Dark together, but as we started up the next level, I found myself wondering what other games she’d be good at.

“My bad, my bad.” I tapped my chest. “I got distracted.”
“Distracted by what?” She waved her hands around us.

“I thought Sam considered that her job.”
“I think we ALL consider it ‘our jobs’ to help everyone get along. Sam may be the one the girls look to for decisive decision-making, but Neevie’s usually the first one to shut down any signs of disharmony and Belle’s the biggest cheerleader for going crazy and having fun.”
“Meanwhile Lily’s taking to The BTC like a turtle to the ocean, and I’m the only hammajang.”

She exhaled slowly and set her N64 controller aside onto the cushion between us. Eva always wore an assortment of necklaces as well as bracelets on both wrists. And it was that leather bracelet she rubbed almost absentmindedly as she muttered, “It means I’m the only one who doesn’t fit in.”
“It’s not that you don’t--”
“I don’t fit in,” she interrupted me. “Don’t take it personally. It’s not about you or the rest of The BTC. I’ve never been very good at fitting in, period.”
“Why is that?”
Eva took in a deep breath and looked away from me. She held it for a few extra seconds before exhaling slowly, pursing her lips, and shaking her head. She started giving me that familiar dismissive expression. But at the same time, I sensed that some part of her wanted to open up to me, and I knew I had to act before the opportunity slipped away.
So before Eva could dismiss me, I slid aside the N64 controller between us and set it on the floor while scooting over to sit right beside her. I reached up to touch her shoulder, giving her plenty of time to see my hand approaching, and she didn’t recoil from me. Instead I could see that her heartbeat had quickened just a bit. She looked into my eyes with a touch of nervousness but did not withdraw. And after rubbing her shoulder for a few seconds, I took a deep breath of my own to speak.
“You don’t have to be alone,” I told her sincerely. “I’m very glad you pointed out that I shouldn’t loan you the N64 so that you can’t hole yourself up in your room all by yourself. “I’ll have to take your word for it,” she replied succinctly. “I’ve never had many friends. Like I said: I don’t fit in.”
“I think you fit in just fine here.”
“I dunno, crowds and I have a love/hate relationship. People say, ‘The more the merrier.’ But honestly, the more people there are, the more… I dunno… Large groups just aren’t my thing these days.”
I arched an eyebrow, slid my hand off her shoulder, and draped it across the backrest. “You seemed to do just fine at that big party up in the hills.”
Eva shrugged as she sat up a little straighter and turned sideways in her seat to face me. “Random strangers are easy to ignore at a big party like that. It’s like… they’re just nameless faces, you know? But whenever it’s all six of us in the living room? Or even seven counting Skylar on that beach trip? But then a shuddering breath came out of nowhere.

Her face had fallen so suddenly that I got a sort of whiplash in shock. It was as if I had simply blinked just once, and when my eyes had reopened there were tears streaming down her cheeks as she sobbed in abject misery.
