I didn’t have any immediate solutions to offer for Rae’s stated problems. Then again, perhaps solutions weren’t necessary at a time like this. If there was one thing I’d learned about dealing with crying girls - gay or not - it was that when their emotions were still raw like this, they didn’t necessarily want you to give them solutions. Instead, they wanted reassurance that you were on their side. Rae didn’t need answers, she needed emotional support.
So I supported Rae. I hugged her without feeling the slightest inclination to cop a feel. I repeated various phrases with a general theme of “I’m here” and “We’ll figure it out” and “We can do this together”. And after a couple of minutes, her tears ran dry and she went so still in my arms that I wondered if she’d fallen asleep.
We were still cuddled together like that when a voice softly asked from across the room, “Am I interrupting something?”
Rae apparently wasn’t asleep, because she immediately jerked her face out from the crook of my neck and slipped off of my lap. “What? No! Of course not! This isn’t what it looks like!”
Jade smiled and raised both hands as she effortlessly glided into the room, dressed in a slinky, sexy green silk robe and back to her cool, calm demeanor and unhurried pace. “Relax, young one. I am only teasing,” she stated with a confident laugh, although I thought I caught a glint of green jealousy in her eyes when she switched from ogling my firm pecs and ripped abs over to cute little Rae.
Meanwhile, Rae wiped her eyes and stood up, returning to the dining table. She picked up the brand-new iPhone and brought it over to us where Jade had draped herself against my side to greet me with a fierce but quick kiss. And she waited until Jade looked back up at her before extending the iPhone forward.
“This is for you,” Rae offered. “My number and Aksel’s number are already programmed into it. In case we ever get separated, not only can we contact each other, but the Find My locators are turned on.”
“Xie xie,” Jade replied politely as she took the phone, thanking Rae for it.
I frowned and pointed at the shiny device. “How come she gets a new model while I’m still stuck with the phone that has a thumb button on it?”
“I’d like to claim it was the only unlocked model the shop in Chicago had, but then I’d be lying.” Rae laughed. “At the time, I still thought of you as an unrepentant womanizer and I was just messing with you. If you really want, I’ll get you a new one.”
I waved her off. “Not a big deal right now, especially since I can’t log on to any of my social media accounts or anything like that. The phone works fine, although a newer model with a better antenna could end up being useful.”
“We’ve been in major cities with excellent cell service so far, but you’re right,” Rae conceded. “Nothing is for certain and we’d best be prepared for anything.”
Rae’s voice was thick with emotion for that last sentence, and I wasn’t the only one to notice.
“Is something wrong?” Jade asked curiously.
Rae took a deep breath before crossing her arms over her chest and then pacing to the left. “Before I answer that question, I have to ask if you have any more information about the Cao Wei’s plans. You gave us good intel about their operations in North America, do you have any information about their operations here? In Europe, if not Rome specifically?”
Jade shook her head. “I’m sorry. I already told you all I know.”
Rae pursed her lips and started pacing to the right.
“Is something wrong?” Jade repeated.
Rae looked a little green around the gills, her eyes unfocused and her expression anxious, so I spoke up to say, “She hasn’t been able to make contact with the other Shu Han.”
Rae’s eyes suddenly narrowed directly at Jade. “Wait, you didn’t tell them we were coming to Rome, did you?”
The viper girl jerked her head back, her expression alarmed. “Tell…? Tell the Cao Wei? No, of course not.”
“Are you sure?”
“Of course I am sure!” Jade insisted, looking confused.
“How can I believe that?”
“Because of Akserrr. Because we are on the same side!” Jade held up her new iPhone and waggled it for emphasis. “I would never betray the avatar of Qinglong.”
Rae pursed her lips, shook her head, and then suddenly stood up from the couch. She paced away towards the kitchen, still shaking her head, and spun back to face us just in front of the dining table. “I told you both that we would meet up with allies here in Europe, but I also warned Aksel that there would be greater numbers of enemies here as well. We were supposed to meet up with my teacher here in Rome, but she’s not responding to my messages and she didn’t show up at our rendezvous location.”
Jade’s expression was grave. “You believe she may have been compromised.”
“She may simply be delayed,” Rae muttered.
“But you believe she may have been compromised,” Jade repeated.
Rae sighed and shrugged, looking helpless. “I don’t know.”
“Do you have any other ways of contacting the Shu Han?”
“I left a message with the shopkeeper. He promised he would pass it along. But there are multiple safeguards to discourage tracing and it could take a while for someone to get back to me.”
Jade looked at me. “Faguang Long must be found. Your Shu Han allies may yet contact us. But we must be prepared to continue the quest no matter what, even without support.”
“Agreed,” Rae confirmed with a nod. “Problem is: none of us know where the third relic is.”
I frowned while interjecting, “Is that necessarily true?”
Rae gave me a confused look while Jade merely arched a sculpted eyebrow. I glanced to my right shoulder and asked, “Hey Dong, you’re supposed to be the key to all this. Do you know where the third relic is?”
The little blue gecko materialized into view in his typical upright posture on two legs, arms folded across his narrow chest with his oversized red eyes fixed directly at Jade. He didn’t respond at first, appearing to be dazed. But after a moment, he blinked and looked up at me, asking, “Oh? Were you talking to me? I was staring at a pair of beautiful things.”
Jade blushed, covered her mouth, and glanced over at me.
I rolled my eyes and repeated, “Do you know where the third relic is?”
“Not a clue!” he replied quite happily.
“Well that’s no help.”
“Although…” he drawled distractedly.
My eyebrows went up. And when he didn’t immediately continue, I led him, “Although…?”
“I do have a certain sensitivity to the other relics. I can feel them.” Dong shrugged and then gestured at Rae. “Like that bamboo scroll map. I can feel it on your person. And this close, I can tell exactly where you’re hiding it.”
Rae looked a little alarmed at the way Dong rather lasciviously eyed her, which made me wonder exactly where she was hiding it. But I forced myself to keep focused and sort out in my head what to do with this new piece of information.
“Wait? How precise is this sensitivity?” I asked. “Like, if we put up a map of the city, would you be able to pinpoint a relic’s precise location?”
Dong put on a big smile and nodded his head up and down quite grandly. “Nope! Not at all!”
I frowned, my shoulders slumping.
“I’m not a GPS locator or anything,” Dong explained. “Instead, think of me like a compass that points to a relic instead of pointing North, with a signal strength that grows stronger the closer we get to it. This close to the bamboo scroll, I have a very strong signal.”
“How far is your range?” I asked. “Like, when Rae went on her errands into the city this afternoon, could you feel where she was at all times?”
“Well, I was a little distracted watching you ramming your big dick up Jade’s tight asshole over and over and--”
“We get it,” Rae interrupted.
Jade blushed again and winked at the tiny gecko. Seemed she rather enjoyed the idea of Qinglong’s avatar lusting for her.
“But to answer your question: no,” Dong continued, turning to me after winking back at Jade. “I couldn’t feel the bamboo scroll’s presence after she left the building.”
“And I assume you can’t feel the next relic - either the Vermilion Bird’s red feather or the White Tiger’s sword - from here either?”
Dong shook his head. “But if you get me close enough, I could probably detect it.”
Jade looked up at Rae. “We need to explore the city.”
“We don’t know for sure that it’s even IN the city.”
“It has to be,” Jade insisted. “Why else would your teacher have brought you to Rome?”
“For all we know, Rome was merely a safe entry into Italy; a safe location where we could meet up with the other Shu Han,” Rae reasoned. “And then we were supposed to travel together somewhere else like the countryside to recover the next relic.”
Jade made a face that said she didn’t like Rae’s answer but couldn’t refute it either. “Still, it is possible for the relic to be in Rome. We should at least try to find it.”
“But where to start?” Rae asked.
I thought about that. “The first two relics were both hidden inside works of art: The Zellij Fountain and The Fremont Troll. It stands to reason the other two relics will likewise be hidden inside some kind of sculpture or fountain or other art piece.”
Rae winced. “There are literally millions of unique works of art here in Rome.”
“Not all of the artwork here has been around for two thousand years,” Jade pointed out. “We should begin with the most ancient sites like the Colosseum or the Pantheon. I have been here before and have some ideas of where to start.”
I shook my head. “The relics have been hidden and re-hidden time and again. The first relic was in The Zellij Fountain in Chicago, and the brochure said that was built by Moroccan artists in 2003.”
“The Zellij Fountain was installed in 2003,” Rae corrected. “I’m willing to bet the part that was actually holding the blue crystal key was far older, and it was only assembled as part of The Zellij Fountain when the relic was moved from Morocco to the United States to take it farther away from enemy hands. Not to mention the bamboo map inside a Volkswagen Beetle used in an American troll sculpture.”
I shrugged. “The point is, it could be anywhere: in something modern, in something ancient, in something in-between. Either we get in contact with someone who knows exactly where, or we hunt blindly around the city and hope we get in close-enough range for Dong to detect it.”
“Hunting blind sounds like a waste of time,” Rae criticized. “It’s only been a few hours. My teacher will make contact with us soon. I have to believe that.”
“I do not share your faith. We should hunt in the city,” Jade declared. “I would rather leave this apartment and attempt to find the next relic than wait inside hoping your teacher makes contact.”
“I dunno,” Dong interjected with a smarmy grin and waggling eyebrows. “-I- wouldn’t mind if you and Aksel stayed inside the apartment for a few days.”
I rolled my eyes and flicked Dong off my shoulder. This time, I kept watching to see whether or not he fell off, but my fingers passed straight through his intangible form. He looked solid enough, and yet it was clear that his body wasn’t actually here.
Turning to Rae, I asked, “Did you give the address to this apartment to the Shu Han shopkeeper?”
“No, of course not,” she replied. “Just a WhatsApp I.D. so that my allies can message me. Nothing that would trace me back to this location.”
“Then I don’t see any benefit in staying inside,” I declared before glancing over at Jade with a blush. “Well, apart from the obvious…”
Jade likewise blushed and smiled.
“I vote we explore the city,” I said, gesturing to Jade. “You said you’ve been here before, but it’s our first time for me and Rae and I wouldn’t mind doing some sightseeing if we have to wait. You can show us around town and we can familiarize ourselves with our surroundings if nothing else. And if we get lucky, we get lucky.”
“I’m all for getting lucky,” Dong volunteered, raising his hand.
“I meant getting lucky in locating the relic.”
“Sure you did.” He patted my cheek. “Sure you did.”
I rolled my eyes. A second later, my stomach loudly gurgled. The girls both giggled, and with a shrug, I added, “Besides, I’m hungry.”
Rae laughed and nodded. “Let’s go.”

The streets of Rome were absolutely packed, even on a Monday afternoon. Our first stop was a local osteria that had the most amazing tortellini I’d ever eaten in my life.
Or I was really, really hungry.
Perhaps a bit of both.
From there, Jade took us on a tour of Rome. Officially, she was supposed to take us to the sites most likely to contain a hidden relic and get us within range for Dong to sense its presence. But Rae and I couldn’t help but point at some famous landmarks and go, “Ooh! Can we go over there!”
We started at the Colosseo (Colosseum) and walked throughout the ginormous amphitheater. I knew that SoFi Stadium in L.A. could seat 70,000 spectators and had been finished in the year 2020. The fact that the ancient Romans had built a 65,000-seat stadium in the first century A.D. absolutely blew my mind. We took selfies in the stands overlooking the arena, we visited the underground spaces where gladiators and animals had been caged, and… oh yeah… we checked with Dong to ask if he sensed anything. He did not.
We explored the excavated ruins of the Foro Romano (Roman Forum) and the Palatino (Palatine Hill). We looked out over the Circo Massimo (Circus Maximus) and imagined epic chariot races. Throughout the journey, Jade told us about her past visits to the city dating back to over five hundred years ago. It was hard to imagine, but even though Jade was over a thousand years old, the structures we were looking at were still ancient compared to her.
It was Rae’s idea to stop by the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) and stand in line with all the tourists to put our hands into the gaping mouth and take a picture. A week ago, I would never have imagined in a million years that the marble mask might actually close on my hand, but I had to be honest: I was pretty scared the mouth just might snap shut around my fingers. Rae started teasing me when I hesitated to put my hand in, and I nearly exclaimed something stupid about The Zellij Fountain turning off or the The Fremont Troll’s Volkswagen bug opening its engine compartment for me. In the end, nothing happened, Rae snapped my photo, and Dong called me a “scaredy-cat”.
Moving into the heart of the city, we visited the Pantheon and bought overpriced gelato from a nearby stall. A visit then to the Piazza Navona and the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) stirred a memory to mind of the Dan Brown novel Angels and Demons, which wrote about the four natural elements on the Path of Illumination. The fountain represented water, while other sites around Rome represented Earth, Air, and Fire. I immediately decided that we should visit the Chigi Chapel, Saint Peter’s Square, and the Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria, plus Castel Sant’Angelo and probably the Sistine Chapel for good measure.
Jade took my suggestion under advisement and then calmly informed me that there were only so many hours in a day during which should probably try to find the third relic.
“The more distance we cover, the more likely Dong will be able to pick up on something,” Rae reasoned, after which she got that pained look on her face that told me she was worried about her teacher again. I’d been happy to see that the extensive sightseeing had helped keep her mind off of those worries for the most part. But in the slow moments between locations, she’d frequently check her phone for new WhatsApp messages to no avail.
In the interest of covering more ground and hitting more landmarks, we visited the Altare della Patria (Altar of the Fatherland), the Colonna Traiana (Trajan’s Column), the Fontana di Trevi (Trevi Fountain), and Dolce & Gabbana. That last one wasn’t actually an Ancient Roman landmark, but rather a high-end clothing boutique that Jade wanted to stop by and check out. While neither she nor Rae actually wore any clothes (I knew it! They were always naked!), it apparently was a common thing for shapeshifters to study name-brand clothing in order to replicate it on their own bodies.
That actually brought up a whole other discussion about the limits of the girls’ shapeshifting powers. Rae was quite happy to point out that even a thousand-year-old hui could only shapeshift between its native human form and its native snake, which Jade’s thin-lipped smile and even narrower-eyed glare appeared to confirm. Meanwhile, a nine-tailed huli jing could transform into almost anything, although Rae admitted that she was only a two-tailed fox and forming the sword had thus far been her most significant accomplishment.
The discussion itself proved controversial enough that I actually shivered from the frost growing between the two girls, and most of my focus was on getting them both to be nice to each other. In fact, I was so focused on playing peacemaker that I somehow completely failed to notice the temporary barriers that had been erected around the nearby Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti (The Spanish Steps). The sun would be setting soon, the Trinità dei Monti Church itself was bathed in glowing light, and there was a general buzz amongst the crowd gathered outside the barriers.
It was because of the crowd that I failed to notice the famous steps themselves had been cordoned off, with not a single tourist walking on them. It was only when Rae looked up and pointed out that fact that we realized something was going on. And my very first thought was to ask, “Did somebody get shot or something?”
Rae frowned at me. “Really?”
“It’s a photo shoot,” Jade observed coolly before gesturing to the large reflective umbrellas mounted high up on temporary scaffolding on the other side of the barriers, readily visible above the crowd. She started walking forward to take a closer look, and Rae and I quickly followed after.
I soon noticed two photographers wearing vests with a dizzying array of camera equipment on them speaking to an older gentleman with graying hair who wore a custom designer suit. There was a large silver Airstream - one of those shiny aluminum travel trailers - most likely for the models to change their clothes in privacy. A harried young woman with her hair in a too-tight bun wearing a headset with a boom microphone spent a lot of time staring at her clipboard while yelling into the microphone. And more than a dozen other people wearing small earpieces scurried to and fro within the perimeter of the barriers that were guarded by another dozen security officers in uniform.
With a sigh I muttered, “Well, looks like this is one landmark that won’t be making it onto my Instagram page.”
“None of these sights are going to make it onto your Instagram page,” Rae warned. “You can’t post any of these pics. You can’t even log onto your account.”
“I know, I know.”
“I don’t think that you do.”
“Well I didn’t mean today,” I insisted. “You know, like… a month from now… when the quest is over and I get to go back to my apartment in Santa Monica and resume a normal life.”
“You still think you’ll ever be able to resume a normal life?” Rae asked skeptically. “And even if you could, what does your new girlfriend think about moving to Santa Monica?”
I immediately turned back to Jade. “Look, I’m not trying to run away from you. I’d be thrilled for you to come stay with me in Santa Monica if you like.”
Jade immediately held up both hands and shook her head. “Please. I am not some starry-eyed young girl you need to placate into not feeling remorse over giving you her virginity.”
“I didn’t mean--”
She waved me off and then hooked her arm through my elbow while leaning in to kiss my lips. We shared a quick peck and then she looked into my eyes, saying softly, “All we are, all we have, is today. Do not worry yourself about what may come tomorrow. In the words of the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, ‘过去是历史，现在是礼物，未来是个谜’”
I gave her a blank look and replied, “I’m not following.”
Rae spoke up, “It translates to, ‘The past is history, the present is a gift, the future is a mystery.’”
I arched an eyebrow. “Master Oogway said that in Kung Fu Panda.”
Rae laughed. “A version of it, yes.”
Jade frowned. “Who is this Master Oogway? I have not heard of him.”
“Nevermind.” I shared a laugh with Rae. Then I looked forward and gestured at all the hubbub around The Spanish Steps, finally saying, “Let’s just move on. Hopefully the Steps will be open tomorrow.”
Jade nodded and then pecked my cheek again. I looked over at Rae, and we backed away from the barrier. But just as we turned, a new voice called out from the other side.
“Aksel? Aksel Andersen? Oh my god! You’re here!”

In Dong’s defense, Hannah Hampton really was one of the most beautiful women in the entire world, and that wasn’t just personal bias. One might argue that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but women don’t get paid to be full-time models unless they’re empirically attractive to a significantly large percentage of the world population, you know?
Hannah wasn’t supermodel famous or anything. The average citizen wouldn’t recognize her name, she’d never done a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition or Victoria’s Secret, and the vast majority of her work was for designer fashion houses. But she had healthy follower numbers on Insta, TikTok, etcetera. And I’d be willing to wager more than a few metric tons of semen had been spilled by men around the world jerking off to her images.
Today the leggy lingerie model with bright-green eyes and shimmering dirty-blonde hair was all dolled-up with avant-garde makeup, an elaborately asymmetrical hairstyle, and an equally elaborate avant-garde dress more appropriate to be mounted in an art museum than worn by an actual human being. One of her legs was completely out of view, but the other leg had been left bare from the base of her transparent high heels all the way up to her crotch, where a tiny satin bikini barely concealed her mons. She was forced to walk in a sort of abbreviated shuffle, and shuffle she did after emerging from the Airstream in order to approach the barrier between us.
“Hannah! Heyyy!” I greeted warmly as I turned around and recognized her despite the alien-ish makeup and attire. I automatically went into my default socialization mode: that of a charismatic young man fueled by the confidence of past success and The Ax Effect.
Hannah absolutely beamed while basking in the glow of my amorous attention. “Aksel! It IS you!” she enthused happily, speeding up her shuffle.
The burly security guard nearest turned to look at her, and then he turned to look at me, and he took upon an expression I was used to seeing in other guys. It was the expression that clearly asked, What’s so special about this guy?
“Ohmigod, I’m so happy to see you!” Hannah came right up to the barrier and extended her arms to me for a hug, and I instinctively leaned forward to hug her, but she caught herself just in time and stopped, instead taking both of my hands and giving them a squeeze. “Sorry. Makeup.”
“Totally understand,” I assured her, squeezing back with my fingers and then letting go. I gestured up at The Spanish Steps, asking, “What are you doing here?”
“Me??? What are YOU doing here?”
“That… is a long story.” I glanced just behind me to where Jade had her arms folded over her chests while coolly evaluating the newcomer. She had that deadly viper look about her, the one whose smile promised a short but painful death if any dared cross her.
Rae, on the other hand, looked rather shocked and awed. Only then did I remember that she’d seen a photo of Hannah on my laptop (with her tit out) just before destroying it (the laptop, not the photo). As I recalled, her response was to say, She’s hot. Like… super-hot.
“Hannah!” another voice called, and we all turned to look back towards the Airstream where another model had just emerged. This one had flaming red hair, abundant freckles, and baby-blue eyes highlighted by her cerulean one-shoulder dress that was just as asymmetrically avant-garde as Hannah’s. “What’s going on?”
“Ma Dai! What is-a going on?” another voice added in a thick Italian accent, this one coming from the harried young woman with the clipboard, headset, and too-tight bun. “We have only a ten-minute-a window of perrrfect lighting that is-a going to start in less-a than five minutes!”
“Sorry!” Hannah called back, giving me an apologetic look.
“Well hello. And who might you be?” the redhead inquired rather saucily in a luxurious French accent as she sauntered up to the barrier and favored me with the kind of sensually inviting smile that made lesser men prematurely cream their underwear.
“I’m Aksel,” I replied with a charming smile.
“Madeleine,” she offered with a coquettish purr while extending her hand across towards me, knuckles forward and fingers loose. “Madeleine Cressy.”
Of course I already knew her name. Everybody knew her name. Unlike Hannah, Madeleine Cressy had both shot a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition AND walked the Victoria’s Secret runway. But I still said politely, “Very pleased to meet you, Madeleine.” And then I took her proffered hand, raised it to my lips, and gently kissed her knuckles.
The gorgeous girl giggled cutely, bit her lip, and stared at me with the sort of expression that suggested she wanted to vault over the barrier and mount me right there in the Piazza di Spagna in front of everybody.
The security guard choked and started thumping his chest while coughing, all while gawking over at me with an expression that clearly exclaimed, Seriously?!? What the fuck?!?
“Girls! NOW!” the production assistant hollered. Behind her were two other models already ascending the steps.
“Coming, Lucia! Sorry. Gotta go,” Hannah apologized. “Will you be around? Can I call you?”
I winced, realizing that Hannah didn’t have my current phone number, and I equally realized that I probably shouldn’t give her my current phone number. “Well, how long will the shoot be?”
“You heard her,” Madeleine piped up. She gestured to Lucia and continued, “We’ve got a ten-minute window of perfect lighting coming up. After that…?”
I glanced back at Jade and Rae. “Mind sticking around for fifteen minutes?”
Jade narrowed her eyes and pursed her lips, but Rae definitely looked interested.
“Girls. Up-a the stairs. Now,” Lucia the production assistant barked, much closer now that she’d come over to us.
“Right. C’mon, Madi,” Hannah said, gesturing for the redhead to follow as she turned. But she also glanced back at me over her shoulder with a beaming smile and blew me a kiss.
Madeleine likewise raised a hand a blew me a kiss before following after the blonde. Finally, Lucia looked over at me as if wondering why two of her fashion models had bothered coming over here in the first place. But a moment later, her expression shifted into one of wonder as a slow smile spread across her face.
“B-Buonasera…” she greeted pleasantly. “Pleased to meet you. Are-a you having a good day?”
“Lucia!” the gray-haired older man yelled.
The poor woman jerked stiff as if coming out of trance, gave me a blank look, and then spun around to run back to the photo shoot without a backwards glance, her heeled shoes making loud clopping sounds on the plaza cobblestones.
I simply smiled and watched her run away, used to that sort of reaction by now. I’d been getting my usual fond glances and stares throughout the city all day. My gaze then moved further to where the four fashion models were arranging themselves at various positions along the famous staircase, taking hold of their elaborate outfits and spreading out the shimmering fabric for maximum effect.
My ears also burned, and I glanced to my sides to find both Rae and Jade stepping alongside me. Jade wrapped an arm around my lower back with a touch of possessiveness, and I wondered how sincere she’d been with her Lao Tzu quote about not worrying about tomorrow.
Rae, perhaps, was on the same wavelength. She stared with shining eyes at the fashion models in front of us, and almost beneath her breath, she softly muttered the quote:
