The Blue Dragon: Chapter 13

“Huodou!” Ziyi exclaimed in alarm somewhere behind me.
The animal on top of me - apparently a ‘Huodou’ - had the shape of a Chuandong Hound but scaled up to the size of a full-grown man. Screw that, this fucking thing was as big as that guy who played The Mountain on Game of Thrones, and I could feel my ribcage starting to buckle beneath the force of its heavy paw on my chest.
Further, its all-black coat was quite literally on fire, with a thin layer of blue haze beneath flickering flames that surrounded it with a corona of searing heat that was already burning through my clothes…
… burning through my skin.
I reacted on pure instinct to grab the dog’s ankle and try to yank its paw off of my chest. Unfortunately, I had neither the strength nor the leverage to make it budge. Fortunately, I did have a different kind of power within me.
My hands turned blue in an instant and started crystallizing over with ice within seconds. The Huodou howled in pain as my magically summoned ice immediately quenched its flames, and it pushed off me, leaping onto the cottage’s small table.
The table did not survive the encounter, collapsing immediately. My chest didn’t feel much better, but at least the seven-foot-tall, five-hundred-pound supernatural monster wasn’t on top of me anymore, and I was able to roll over onto my side to survey the situation.
The Huodou had not arrived alone. Two Liang soldiers dressed in full battle armor had come through the door already, with more following in behind them. Ziyi had leaped forward with a short sword in each hand, twirling and slashing to fend off the first two soldiers while I did an awkward roll on the floor away from them to keep from getting trampled.
A moment later, I threw up both hands, summoning an ice barrier between us and the soldiers and then pushing it forward so that both of them got slammed back against the wall.
“We’ve got to get out of here!” Ziyi shouted while I popped to my feet and threw a water barrier at the fire dog roaring at us from atop what was left of the table, the magic water blasting against the Huodou’s flaming fur and momentarily quenching the fire with a loud hiss and clouds of steam.
“No kidding!” I exclaimed. The small one-room cottage wasn’t big enough for all of us, and already Ziyi and I were basically backed into a corner. Plus, there were more soldiers blocking the only door. “But how?”
“The window!” she yelled, still facing the door. A moment later, her legs transformed into a serpent’s tail. She briefly coiled on the floor before powerfully springing off it and leaping across the room. Along the way, her body both shrunk and morphed into that of a regular-sized Mangshan pit viper, just small and skinny enough to fly past the swinging paw of the Huodou without getting hit. And then she was out through the window opening and into the small garden beyond.
Leaving me all alone in the cottage with six soldiers and a ginormous flaming dog.
The soldiers I wasn’t too worried about. I’d handled myself well enough in the prison and summoned a stable ice barrier with my left hand to hold out as a large shield. They still had swords that could cut through my human flesh quite easily, but as long as I didn’t let any of them get past the barrier, I would only have to focus on one other enemy: the Huodou.
The thing was absolutely massive and quite terrifying to look at. I liked dogs well enough, but the snarling, drooling monstrosity with flaming eyes and spiky fangs was something straight out of a nightmare. The growling Huodou shifted its stance, flexing powerful, bulging muscles as it prepared to leap, and I very nearly shat myself.
Relax, dude. Water always defeats fire in the elemental cycle.
Taking a deep breath, I kept my left arm extended to maintain the ice barrier against the soldiers by the door. Holding up my right fist and narrowing my eyes in concentration, I focused on pouring my energy into my elemental water powers. And a shimmering blue-white, double-edged longsword sprouted up from my fist towards the ceiling before finishing in a jaggedly sharp point.
The fire in the flaming dog’s eyes seemed to dim.
Its tail drooped as it sat down on its hindquarters. Its massive head dropped down between its shoulders. Its sloppy jowls sagged downward in a deep-set frown, and then it leaped out the window, smashing apart the rectangular frame and letting out a pitiful whine as it fled.
I blinked twice, so momentarily startled that I actually dropped the ice barrier between me and the soldiers.
Luckily enough, they were so momentarily startled that they didn’t take advantage of the situation, gawking at the departing dog’s hindquarters with as much surprise as me.
Then they started gawking at me and the still-shimmering blue-white sword in my hand.
They couldn’t run out through the cottage door fast enough, bumping their shoulders into each other as they did so, with one tripping and falling flat on his face before he scrambled up onto all fours and actually crawled for several feet before getting up to continue running away. And thirty seconds later, I was all alone in the cottage without a single thing putting me in danger any longer.
Well, except that the cottage was now on fire.
The ceiling above where the Huodou had crouched atop the crushed table had already been blackened. The table itself was currently on fire. The wooden frame of the open window that the Huodou had jumped through was also on now fire. And the flickering flames were already spreading to the thatched brush that covered the cottage roof.
Hmm… If only someone in this house had supernatural water powers…
I took a deep breath, concentrated, and felt my hands turning blue.

“This is all my fault,” I muttered grimly, glancing back in the vague direction of the scorched cottage. It wasn’t safe to be there anymore, so instead Ziyi had led me to what appeared to be an empty warehouse in a different part of the city south of the Luo River where we could lay low for a bit.
“Your fault? How is this your fault?” she asked, arching a delicate eyebrow.
“They must have followed me from the city out to the cottage. I wasn’t doing anything special to throw off pursuit.”
“They didn’t follow you,” Ziyi replied even more grimly. “They must have followed me.”
“Followed you? How? It would be impossible for them to track a Mangshan pit viper.”
“I didn’t stay a Mangshan pit viper the whole time. Walking is a lot faster, after all. Perhaps they didn’t even need to follow either of us. Perhaps they discovered our location through other means entirely. But one thing is for sure: they weren’t expecting you at all. Their trap was meant for me.”
“What makes you say that?”
“Simple: they never would have sent a Fire Elemental if they knew I had a Water Elemental with me. Therefore, they weren’t expecting you at all. A Huodou would’ve proven deadly against someone like me.”
“Someone like you?”
“I’m a Metal Elemental.”
“Metal Elemental? I didn’t know there was any such thing. Aren’t the four elements supposed to be Earth, Air, Fire, and Water?”
“Chinese Wuxing philosophy has five elements, and Air isn’t one of them.”
“Did someone kill off all the Airbenders?”
“What?”
“Nevermind.” I waved my hand dismissively.
She looked at me curiously but continued, “Metal defeats Wood, Wood defeats Earth, Earth defeats Water, Water defeats Fire, and Fire defeats Metal.”
“Good to know.”
She then let snake scales cover almost her entire body from the neck down and then held her arm out so I could inspect them. I’d seen her scales before - especially on Jade - and I knew they were supple and not rigidly hard. But when I tapped on one at her wrist, I realized that they were still incredibly strong and durable.
“These are metal scales?” I asked.
“Your ‘Jade’ doesn’t have metal scales?”
“I know she has scales, but I didn’t know they were metal.”
She nodded. “Supernaturally strong metal. Stronger than soldier armor, for sure. With these, I’m virtually indestructible to most attacks.”
“Except against fire.”
“Except against fire. Under enough heat, my scales will melt and leave me vulnerable. So that’s why they sent a Huodou.” She grimaced and then gave me a grateful look. “Were it not for you, I might have died today.”
I shook my head. “You can’t die. You’re going to live for many, many years until I finally meet you as Jade in the future.”
Her expression turned sorrowful. “You don’t actually know that. I’ve been thinking. Even if you are from the future, for all we both know, this ‘Jade’ you meet is simply another hui shapeshifter who looks a lot like me.”
I furrowed my eyebrows. “Another Mangshan pit viper whose stated age would have her born right around this exact time period who happens to look just like you? I mean, people say all Asians look alike, but come on.”
“What people say that?”
“Nevermind. Trust me: you’re going to live.”
Ziyi shook her head. “I hear you saying that, but I can’t let myself believe it. I can’t be reckless, put myself in danger, and assume everything will turn out alright.”
I waggled my head. “Fair enough. But that said, you’re going to have to do something reckless, put yourself in danger, and at least hope that everything will turn out alright. And you’re going to have to do it pretty soon.”
“Why is that?”
I held up the two Imperial Palace entry passes I’d saved from the cottage. “Because these things are only valid tomorrow.”

The sun was starting to come down on the following day when Ziyi and I arrived at the southern gate to the Imperial Palace complex and we presented our passes to the guards. I was dressed in new formal lanshan government official attire and wearing makeup to disguise my features, and Ziyi had shapeshifted into a new ruqun hanfu high-waisted dress. We fit right in with the other people traveling through the gate, although the majority of those were government officials leaving the palace complex after concluding their business within. It was unusual for us to be entering this late in the day, but this was the only time I would be able to bring in “my wife”. Women could not be Imperial bureaucrats, so we needed a “social” reason for coming.
“We are visiting Princess Puning,” she stated casually with a charming smile for the guard. No matter what century, men always like it when a pretty girl smiles at them.
“Yes, of course,” the guard replied with a goofy smile of his own. It was nearing dinnertime, the perfect time for a royal’s social visit. He handed back our passes to me and then waved for us to continue. “I’m sure you know the way.”
“Of course we do. Thank you,” Ziyi replied, batting her eyelashes. She then took hold of my arm and led me forward as if she knew exactly where she was going. She probably did know, actually, given that she’d done some earlier scouting as a snake and knew where the sword would be held. I was the one who didn’t know my way around but would need this sort of reconnaissance in order to familiarize myself with the layout.
Beyond the main gate was another courtyard with ten-foot walls and a small moat across it. Should the main gate fail during an attack, the moat and the surrounding walls would make for very good defensive positions. Any attackers would have to cross the small bridges to the other side of the courtyard and then ascend the stairs on the other side.
After ascending those stairs, we passed through another open gate, this one staffed by two guards who didn’t bother to check our passes. They were merely on hand to close the secondary gate doors if necessary. On the other side, we descended the opposite set of stairs leading to a private square for internal ceremonies and took in the spectacular view straight ahead of the Ming Tang, the extravagant Hall of Enlightenment. Further beyond and to the left was the five-story Tian Tang, the Heavenly Hall. But Ziyi instead led me across the square to the right towards the eastern side of the palace.
She’d given me a brief overview of the Imperial Palace grounds. The west side by the service gate were for operations: food, logistics, administration, the barracks, and the like. The north side held the Inner Court, with Emperor Taizu’s residence, his private garden, and the Imperial Treasury. And the east side was for royal leisure, with the Imperial Garden, the Painting Gallery, and the spiritual centers.
I chose to take it as a good omen that we were heading to the east side, given that Qinglong was the Azure Dragon of the East. Also, the further away we stayed from the barracks the better, at least for now. If the whole point of this venture was for me to familiarize myself with the layout, I’d have to scope out that area eventually.
Luoyang had been a capital city of Ancient China since A.D. 25, but the city had been burned down and rebuilt many times over the centuries. The present Imperial Palace was a mix of ancient architecture and new construction, much like the rest of the city, with slate gray stone for paved walkways amidst carefully manicured greenery designed to promote feng shui harmony and the circulation of chi energy throughout the entire area.
The palace complex was far more regimented than the rest of the city, however. The majority of the buildings had identical gabled rooftops and were constructed at precise right angles to each other on strictly north-south and east-west alignment. The land had been graded into a uniformly flat surface without hills or valleys.
The general plan was for us to casually meander around the palace grounds as if we belonged there, hiding in plain sight. We moved at an unhurried pace so as not to draw attention, and I had to force myself to keep my gaze forward and use my peripherals to look around. A government official gawking at all the scenery like a dumb tourist would most certainly garner some attention.
Guards were also milling about the area, although most of them ignored us. One guard, however, perhaps saw us near the Painting Gallery and then saw us again when we doubled back to head towards the Imperial Garden. And he raised his hand, calling out, “You there! Stop!”
We stopped and waited politely, and I forced myself to relax. “Yes, sir? Is there a problem?” I asked with a genteel, innocent expression.
The guard walked up to us and instructed, “State your business.”
“We are visiting Princess Puning,” Ziyi explained helpfully, batting her eyelashes and smiling.
Once again, a pretty girl smiling had its usual effect, and the guard actually smiled back at her. Still, he asked, “Do you know where her residence is?”
Ziyi replied easily, “She is in the Palace of Great Benevolence.”
“Indeed, but the Palace of Great Benevolence is in that direction.” The guard gestured northward.
“We know, but my husband and I are stopping by the Imperial Garden to pluck a lotus blossom for her,” Ziyi explained, gesturing the other way. “We don’t want to arrive for a social visit with the princess empty-handed.”
“Ah.” The guard nodded in understanding and briefly bowed his head. “Very well. Have a good evening.”
“And you as well,” I replied formally, sketching a short bow in return. I then took Ziyi’s arm and we walked off towards the garden while the guard turned and went the other way.
We actually did go to the Imperial Garden and plucked a lotus blossom from a pond, a pretty one with evenly sized white petals and dark pink hues in the center. Ziyi was careful to dry it off and then carried it with her as we returned to the main walkways, this time heading north towards the Inner Court and the Imperial residences.
We didn’t actually try to enter the Inner Court, though. Doing so would require presenting our passes to another set of guards, passes which did NOT include entry into the Inner Court. Only the Emperor himself and his closest wives lived there. Fortunately, Princess Puning was only a lesser daughter of one of Zhu Wen’s tertiary wives. She did not live within the Inner Court, so there was no conflict with our supposed reason for being in the palace complex.
We did however check out the northern wall and its little-used gate. As expected, it was lightly guarded and appeared to be the easiest path to get out of a locked-down palace complex. The unclimbable walls were designed to keep invaders out, not to keep escapees in. And we would easily be able to ascend the stairs to the top of the north gate and descend from there.
Continuing counterclockwise around the palace grounds, we passed by tightly clustered buildings that looked far more “functional” than “aesthetically pleasing”. These were buildings used for administration of the palace complex and education of the young royals. But according to the signs above their doors, they still had lofty names like Tower of State Benevolence or Hall of Honesty and Respect.
The barracks that housed the palace guards were also located in this section, named the Hall of Military Prowess, and that was when we ran into trouble.
“You there! Stop!” an authoritative voice commanded from behind us while we stood beside the Hall of Literary Glory.
Ziyi and I both casually turned around, and I asked with a genteel, innocent expression, “Yes, sir? Is there a problem?”
The guard walked up to us and instructed, “State your business.”
“We are visiting Princess Puning,” Ziyi explained helpfully, batting her eyelashes and smiling.
Perhaps the setting sun did not provide enough illumination for the guard to see the pretty girl’s smile. Perhaps her face was in shadow. Perhaps this older, grizzled guard was more immune to the charms of a pretty girl. Whatever the reason, the guard ignored Ziyi completely and narrowed his eyes at me. “Princess Puning? Do you know where her residence is?”
Since the guard’s attention remained on me, I shrugged and replied, “She is in the Palace of Great Benevolence.”
“Indeed, but the Palace of Great Benevolence is nowhere near here. Why are you here, scholar?”
The word ‘scholar’ gave me an idea, as the guard must have identified me by my scholar’s robes. I gestured to the Hall of Literary Glory and explained, “I needed to return a book to the library. That is finished, so my wife and I are now continuing on our visit to Princess Puning.”
The guard looked suspicious. “You work here? I don’t recognize you.”
“I’ve only been here for a week,” I said reasonably.
He still looked suspicious and gave me a stern look as if waiting to see if I’d crack and start babbling something stupid. I actually felt like babbling something stupid, but Ziyi interjected smoothly, “Please, sir, may we go now? We do not want to be late for dinner, especially after my husband’s errand.”
The guard stood up straight and pursed his lips, evaluating us with an expression that clearly said that his instincts told him something was fishy. For a moment, it seemed like he was going to arrest us or something, just in case. But instead he gave us a grand smile and gestured eastward.
“By all means. Please be on your way,” he stated with a forced amiability that immediately put me on alert.
Still, I replied politely, “Thank you very much.” And then I took Ziyi by the arm and started walking back across the imperial grounds towards the royal residences.
And the guard started following us.
Neither of us turned around to look over our shoulders, but I could tell Ziyi felt his presence just the same. She held my hand around her arm, her fingernails digging into my skin just a bit from tension. Still, both of us continued at the same unhurried pace we’d been using for the past hour of walking around like we belonged there. And we acted as if neither of us noticed that we had a shadow.
I had no idea where the Palace of Great Benevolence was located but Ziyi subtly directed me where to go. We passed through the courtyard between the Inner Court and the back of the Ming Tang. I risked a glance up at the towering Tian Tang, briefly thinking of the great Sword of Baihu that must be stored within, our ultimate goal. And a part of me wondered if we might not be better off just making a run for it here and now, charging the five-story tower, battling our way to the sword, and then racing to the north gate to make a dramatic escape.
It was my destiny… right?
It had already been written… right?
Perhaps sensing my impatience, Ziyi dug her fingernails a little deeper into my skin and urged me forward. I relaxed and continued walking, crossing the courtyard and moving into the lush foliage and greenspaces surrounding the royal residences. At that point, I rather hoped that the grizzled guard would leave us alone and return to the barracks, but when we rounded a building, I caught a glimpse of him still following from a hundred paces back.
Ziyi led us straight to an ornately decorated two-story building with a sign above it that read: Palace of Great Benevolence. My heart started beating faster in my chest as we ascended the steps onto the front porch and walked beneath a circular arch built from lacquered red wood. The plan all along had been to tell anyone who asked that we were visiting the Princess Puning, but I never expected we might actually visit the princess. And I had no idea what we might say to talk our way out of the situation now that we were here.
Stopping in front of the door, Ziyi took hold of a small bell dangling by a red ribbon, and she rang it three times. Then we waited patiently while I gritted my teeth and forced myself not to look back over my shoulder at where that grizzled guard must certainly be still watching us.
A minute later, the door opened and a young maid bowed. “Yes? How may I serve you?”
“We are here to visit Princess Puning,” Ziyi stated pleasantly. “Would you be so kind as to inform her that--”
“But the princess is not expecting any company tonight,” the maid interrupted in confusion. “She is not properly dressed for visitors.”
“We understand,” Ziyi continued sweetly. “Still, it is very important that we--”
“I’m sorry, but that’s impossible,” the maid interrupted again, shaking her head in the negative. And she started to back away while closing the door.
I could practically feel the guard approaching closer behind us, so on impulse, I took a step forward to put my foot into the doorway.
“Please…” I intoned with as much charm as I could manage, leaning forward and smiling at the young woman. “It would mean so much to me if you could help us out. Won’t you ask the princess if she will see us?”
The girl looked up at me…
… and her eyes went wide. No matter what century, girls always like it when I smile at them. The Ax Effect was doing its thing.
“Yes… Yes of course…” the maid replied with a goofy smile of her own, giggling cutely as she blushed. “Please come in.”
We went inside.

“Noooo… it is so wrong… Ohhh… Ohhh… Father would be furious if he found out… Ohhh… Ohhh… It’s so big! Too big inside of me! Toobig-toobig-toobig-OH-OH-OH! Oh gods! Oh gods! Ah! AH!!! MMPH!!!”
Princess Puning’s cry was muffled by my hand to keep her from screaming out loud. She’d been pushing the limit as I was, and the absolute last thing any of us wanted was for one of the guards outside to hear her orgasmic shrieking and come to investigate.
Ziyi must’ve been on the same wavelength, because she appeared next to us a moment later, holding a scarlet red strip of cloth. And when I removed my hand from Puning’s mouth, Ziyi was quick to wrap the cloth over the girl’s face and tie it behind her head as a more permanent muffle.
If Puning seemed to mind, she didn’t show it. She merely closed her eyes and surrendered to the feelings while clutching my body above hers with all four limbs, concentrating inwards on the sensations of being filled up with thick dick for the very first time.
The princess was a tiny little thing, petite and slender with the face of a porcelain doll and a cherubic smile. Warlord Zhu Wen, now Emperor Taizu, had many wives and consorts, and even more sons and daughters, but only his most favored lived within the Inner Court. Puning was the fourth eldest daughter and had come of age, which meant that she was old enough to live on her own until her father decided to marry her off to some young lord from another kingdom for political reasons. Until then, she was expected to continue her education, learn how to run a household, and remain virginally pure.

I didn’t plan on taking the young princess’s cherry, and from the way Ziyi stood next to us holding two fingers to her temple and her bright-green eyes closed with an expression that stated she had a really bad headache, it was clear that she wasn’t particularly thrilled with how this evening was turning out. But in my defense, I’d argue that we really didn’t have any other choice.
I mean, it wasn’t like The Ax Effect had an OFF switch. I couldn’t help it.
As the maid said, Princess Puning had not been expecting visitors tonight and was therefore not dressed for guests. She had not been attired in an elaborately complicated dress with three layers and an overabundance of fancy embroidery. Her face had not been painted white with cherry-red lipstick and exotic eyeshadow. Her hair had not been artfully piled atop her head with golden jewelry woven throughout. She was simply a fresh-faced girl wearing a thin robe that did not restrict the movement of her unfettered breasts, and she’d been utterly shocked and horrified to find her maid bringing outside guests into her private chambers while she was thusly underdressed.
But the maid had appeared only too happy to please me while ignoring Ziyi completely, asking if I was hungry and explaining that the princess was just settling down to dinner. Puning had been simultaneously angry with her maid and desperate to impress me at first sight, berating her servant girl for not giving her proper warning while concurrently apologizing to me with nervous laughter that she didn’t usually look like this. Both the maid’s and Puning’s voices started to escalate, Ziyi started looking towards the front door nervously for fear of guards coming to investigate why the women were yelling so soon after we’d arrived, and I’d stepped forward while mustering all the charm I could come up with by complimenting her beauty, stating that I was hungry, and insisting that I would be much happier if we could just all get along and have a pleasant meal.
So we did have a pleasant meal. Well, the maid brought the meal and then remained halfway hidden in the doorway, watching me, Ziyi, and Puning eat. Well, she was watching ME eat, at least. Puning was watching me eat too, or more accurately, she was watching my mouth with a deeply aroused expression that indicated she wanted to find out what my lips might feel like all over her naked body. And when the young princess took a stick of sliced cucumber and pumped it in and out of her mouth rather lasciviously, I wondered just how much the girl had already learned about the carnal arts.
Was there a Chinese version of the Kama Sutra that they taught to young princesses? The throbbingly hard dick in my pants certainly wanted to find out. And as soon as Puning noticed that I had a woody, she stared at my crotch quite hungrily.
Still, the three of us maintained our formalities. Puning was quite understanding and only too eager to help us out, making it obviously clear that she would do anything for me.

But nothing went beyond some heavy flirting, and as dinner wrapped up, I could see Ziyi checking the water clock in the corner of the room to measure how much time had passed.

We could quite reasonably leave Princess Puning’s house at this time having concluded our social visit and then casually walk out the front gate as if the whole night had been utterly ordinary. And when the maid came to clean away the dishes, Ziyi and I stood up and prepared to leave.
But Puning didn’t want me to go. The sash of her robe slipped and the two halves opened, revealing a vertical slit two inches wide of her naked torso between her perky breasts. She circled the table, grabbed my hand, and clutched it with both of hers. She was less than five feet tall and had to stare up at me at a steep angle. Still, she carried herself with a haughty, regal demeanor, and there was an almost condescending malevolence in her eyes as she intoned seriously, “I don’t know who you are or why you have come, but I WILL scream and call for the guards if you don’t give me what I want.”
I swallowed thickly and asked, “And what do you want?”

Well, not exactly what happened next.

Can I just say how intense this chapter was. But first things first, I think that this chapter has got to earn the fastest title drop you've ever done. Can't really beat having the first word being the title. With that being said though, that thing really does make quite a nuisance of itself at the very least. Still, it also serves to show just how unexpected Aksel's presence was with the fact that he can deal with it with his abilities as opposed to Ziyi who is at a big disadvantage. I thought that was a very clever way of showing the five elements as well as the weakness chain. I really appreciate the later and not to mention how water beating fire really is a universal rule. The infiltration certainly went smoothly enough at first but they say third time's the charm and that was not the case for them unfortunately. The guard was certainly competent enough or had good instincts which means that Aksel and Ziyi had to follow through with what they said and visit the princess. And of course we all know how that went. But the road to how it got there was quite the interesting tale in my opinion. For one thing it was quite a reminder that for a woman to be ready she had to be in quite the elaborate get up and also the fact that the princess may not be unaware of sexual stuff was a pretty amusing development. Speaking of which, there's definitely has to be the first time a woman tends to take the lead when Aksel is involved. Goes to show just how big Imperial entitlement really is. But unfortunately all things must come to an end and we're right back to where we started regarding the Huodou. Which is quite surprising considering how simple it was but I guess it really resonated with me.
