“Hundred percent,” Mari pronounced with a satisfied smile before tilting her face to look up at me. “But I warned you already that I’ve still got a lot of pent-up horniness, so you’re gonna get quite a workout before I have to fly home.”
“I didn’t forget.” I gave her a warm smile back. “It would be my pleasure to give you yours.”
Mari beamed at me, and I saw the shimmering glow of her old love for me in her gaze.
And that sight made me frown.
Mari noticed immediately. At the change in my facial expression, she knitted her eyebrows together and asked, “What’s wrong?”
Taking a deep breath, I let out a long exhalation and then gave Mari a serious look. “You know I will do everything I can to make sure your Thanksgiving trip is a truly pleasant one. You’re my Angel, and I love that you’re here with me today. But at the same time, I’m only too aware that I can’t be there for you at Caltech. And I want to make sure you know I don’t want you holding yourself back for--”
“Didn’t we already have this conversation?” Mari sighed, interrupting me.
“We have,” I admitted.
“What conversation?” Belle inquired curiously.
I started by saying, “I want Mari to understand I won’t be jealous if she--” while Mari simultaneously groaned and muttered, “Matty’s trying to make me put out for some rando so he won’t feel guilty about--”
“Wait-wait-what?” Belle sputtered in confusion.
I pursed my lips and started to immediately counter Mari’s statement, but I paused and gestured for her to go ahead first.
Rolling onto her belly and propping herself up with her elbows, Mari pursed her lips and sighed through her nostrils, shaking her head at me. “I told you: I’m not the kind of girl who becomes casually intimate with just anyone. There’s a lot of trust that needs to be built before I let myself be vulnerable that way. And even if I’d met someone on the first day of class, I don’t know that I’d have been ready by now. I’m simply not there yet.”
“I know that. I do,” I insisted. “But at the same time, can you truthfully say that you’re not holding yourself back out of a sense of loyalty to me? When Skylar asked if you were seeing anyone, you DID tell her that I’m the only boyfriend you want or need.”
Mari bowed her head and exhaled heavily in a way that made her cheeks puff out.
“I didn’t want to get into that conversation at Skylar’s place, but there was a note of truth in your voice.”
“It’s totally true,” Belle chimed in as she rolled onto her belly and propped herself up as well. “She’s got pictures of you in her dorm room and tells anyone who asks that she’s got a long-distance boyfriend at Berkeley.”
Mari frowned. “Are you NOT my long-distance boyfriend?”
I shrugged. “I am if you want me to be.”
Her frown deepened. “Even though I’m not your long-distance girlfriend. I know you only count four right now: Sam, Neevie, Belle, and Lily.”
Belle and I both grimaced at the same time, which made Mari sit up a little straighter and ping-pong her gaze back and forth between us.
“Wait-wait-what? What happened?” she asked.
“Lily broke up with us,” Belle explained.
“Well, you broke up with Lily first,” I pointed out. “And then she broke up with me.”
“Wait, what?” Mari looked put out. “When? How is this the first time I’m hearing about it?”
“Long story,” Belle waved dismissively, clearly not wanting to get into it. But I’d already started replying, “A little more than a week ago.”
“A week?” Mari exclaimed, now looking seriously peeved. “B! We talked on Saturday! And you didn’t tell me?!”
“Lily and I didn’t ‘break up’,” Belle insisted. “Can’t break up when you’re never ‘together’.”
“You’re the one who said, ‘Lily broke up with us’ five seconds ago,” Mari pointed out.
“Don’t deflect. We’re getting off-topic. You’re the one who’s supposed to be under the microscope right now,” Belle growled to her BFF. “Clinging to the ghost of a long-distance boyfriend who doesn’t consider you a long-distance girlfriend and all.”
“Well hold up,” I muttered defensively. “I still consider all of the NBG’s to be my long-distance girlfriends for as long as they want; we never actually ‘broke up’. Okay well Holly wanted to be officially single so she wouldn’t feel guilty about flirting with other guys; but still, if you or Alice or Zofi ever wanted to come back and pick up right where we’d left off, I’d be perfectly happy to continue.”
“Classic Matty: be whatever one of us needs him to be.” Belle shrugged. “If you want him to be your long-distance boyfriend, he’ll be your long-distance boyfriend. If you want him to let you go so you can date somebody else, he’ll let you go so you can date somebody else.”
“Just like he’ll let you go so you can date somebody else,” Mari said pointedly to her best friend, her eyes sharp and filled with deeper meaning.
“Mari!” Belle exclaimed.
I blinked in surprise and turned my attention to my pint-sized pixie. “Something you wanna tell me?”
“It’s nothing.”
“B…” I drawled warningly. “You promised to be honest with me, warts and all.”
Belle rolled her eyes and groaned before shooting Mari an accusatory look. “We’re supposed to be talking about YOU.”
I sat up a little straighter against the headboard and looked down at both girls before focusing my attention on Belle. “Do you want me to let you go so you can date somebody else?”
“What?! No! Of course not!”
I arched both eyebrows. “Then why does Mari seem to know something I don’t?”
“Mari knows a LOT of things you don’t know because she’s got two X-chromosomes, three fewer girlfriends than you, and has more time available to talk to me,” Belle muttered.
I simply took a deep breath and silently gave her an expectant look.
Belle sat up and crossed her legs in front of her, oblivious to her nudity. I couldn’t help but glance down at her perky breasts with erect little nipples, and her delicate labia still gaping open and moist from our recent lovemaking. But her gaze was unfocused into the middle distance while she absentmindedly fiddled with her fingernails.
Eventually, though, Belle found her voice.
“Matty’s never gonna love you the way you want to be loved,” she stated matter-of-factly to Mari, her expression grim. “Now maybe if you’d come to Berkeley with the rest of us instead of following your astronaut dreams to Caltech, you miiight’ve had a shot. But even still you’d be splitting his love with three other girls at a minimum. And then your choices would be to either compete with your best friends to win the ring or… or…”
Mari’s eyes narrowed. “Or settle for being his eternal ‘little sister’ as a cheat code to keep yourself in his life while giving up on your dreams to win the ring?”
Belle frowned. “We’re talking about you.”
“Yeah, uh-huh. Sure we are.”
Belle ignored the jibe, set her jaw, and stated coldly, “You deserve better than pining after a long-distance boyfriend who never considered you more than a B-tier girlfriend compared to Sam, Neevie, or even me.”
“Belle,” I barked.
“You were always the sweet one. The shy one,” Belle continued, ignoring me. “But Matty needs an Alpha Queen by his side: confident, poised, gorgeous, and intoxicating. You were never gonna win a head-to-head with girls like Sam or Neevie.”
“Belle, I’m serious.” I put my hand on her arm to get her attention with a stern look for her to stop.
But Belle shook off my grip and rolled her eyes at me. “I’m not telling her anything I haven’t already told her before. Just like I’ve already told her many times before that she deserves better than you. She deserves better than a guy who didn’t appreciate enough what he had while he had her.”
That last part stung, and not for the first time I wondered if I shouldn’t have locked her down when I had the chance and lived Happily Ever After.
“I mean look at her! She is Queen Mari!” Belle continued before turning her attention back to Mari. “Girl, you’re a stone-cold fox right now!”
The stone-cold fox blushed prettily at the compliment.
Belle then looked at me while gesturing back at Mari. “Tell me she’s not empirically hotter right now than at any other time in her life.”
Suddenly put on the spot, it took me a moment to turn to my luscious Latina and state, “I’ve always loved you at any size, but you ARE empirically hotter right now than ever before. I fully meant it when I said you’re the kind of stunning beauty that stops traffic from across the street.”
“Stop it.” Mari blushed and shook her head. “I’m still overweight.”
“You’re never gonna have Zofi’s stick-figure bone structure - not that you ever needed to. I can tell you’ve lost weight since the summer. Five pounds at least? In less than three months?”
“Eight pounds.” Mari looked a little proud of herself. “I study, I sleep, and I work out at the gym when I need a mental break. Sweating it out has been really good for clearing my head, and the gym is conveniently close to my dorm room. They’ve got a pool, too.”
“Which I’m sure is an exceedingly popular destination whenever you’re taking a cool-down dip,” I stated admiringly. “I can tell you’ve been working out, but you still have curves for days. You’re in the best shape of your life and in a prime position to catch any guy you want.”
“And what if the only guy I want is in Berkeley?” she asked in a heartbreakingly sincere voice.
I opened my arms to her. “I will always welcome you at any time you want or need.”
Mari instantly lunged into my grasp, and she squeezed me even more tightly than I was squeezing her.
But after a minute of letting us hug, Belle spoke up again. “This is all well and good for the next few days while you’re in the Bay Area. But you’re still going back to Caltech on Sunday.”
Mari sighed. “I’m aware of that fact.”
“It’s also a fact that Gerald’s still pining after you,” Belle pointed out.
Mari sighed again. “I’m too busy to date a guy at USC.”
“And dating a guy at Cal would be any easier?”
“Well I didn’t come up here a day early to see Gerald.”
I squeezed Mari against my side, kissed her forehead, and said warmly, “I’m really glad you surprised me today.”
She beamed up at me. “I’m really glad too.”
“But I want to circle back to your comment about me trying to make you put out for some rando. I’m very sorry if I ever made you feel that way. It was never my intent. I’m not pushing you away from me nor asking you to hook up with some other guy just to relieve my sense of guilt. If keeping me in your heart as your long-distance boyfriend is what you’re comfortable with, I’m totally on-board.” I sighed and gave her an apologetic look. “Matter-of-fact, that tells me I haven’t done enough to keep in close contact with you these past few months. I know you talk to Belle all the time, but I don’t think you and I have ever had a single one-on-one call, let alone--”
“It’s not your fault,” Mari said with a sigh. “I never expected you to make any extra effort to keep in close contact with me and I’m not asking you to start. You’ve barely got enough time and energy to keep up with all the girls who actually live within a hundred yards of you, let alone take care of a girl who lives four hundred miles away.”
“She’s not wrong,” Belle muttered.
Mari hugged me fiercely again, but then she took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. Sitting up, she had such a look of sadness on her face that I wasn’t even tempted to ogle her - naked stone-cold fox or not. And after another deep breath and sigh, she shook her head, mumbling, “I want to believe you’ll always love me. Maybe it’d never be the kind of white-hot passion you feel for Neevie, the I-can’t-live-without-her pining you feel for Sam, or the always-be-my-baby love you feel for Belle. But at least--”
“I’ll always love my sweet, sweet Mariangel,” I told her sincerely.
She gave me a shy smile and finally picked her head up to look at me. From the way she was hugging herself, her magnificent rack looked amazing. And when her entire torso started jiggling, I knew she’d noticed my gaze.
“I know you’ll always love me in your own way,” Mari said when I finally brought my eyes back up to her face. “But I also know your love for me isn’t the kind of ‘to have and to hold, for richer, for poorer, until death do us part’ kind of matrimonial love. And that’s okay. We’re both still teenagers and a long, long ways away from worrying about marriage.”
“My thoughts exactly,” I agreed before shooting a disdainful glance at Belle.
“Mi mamá has been trying to push me to settle down, get married, and start popping out kids since my quinceañera, but I knew way back then that it wasn’t the life I wanted for myself. Right now, I’m far more interested in my classes and being a top student than in meeting boys.”
I nodded my understanding. “Makes total sense.”
“And I know that at the end of the day, all you want is for me to be happy,” Mari continued, giving me a brave smile, “even if… - no, that’s the wrong word - especially when I find a man who will love me the way I truly deserve, with the kind of ‘to have and to hold, for richer, for poorer, until death do us part’ kind of matrimonial love that’s meant for me.”
“I couldn’t agree more,” I stated firmly with a nod.
Mari smiled. But then her eyebrows popped and she turned her attention to her bestie, adding, “Just like at the end of the day, all Matty wants is for you to be happy, especially when you find a man who will love you the way you truly deserve.”
“Don’t even go there,” Belle stated coldly.
“You’re always gonna be his shorty ‘little sister’. You’re always gonna be his sweet little Annabelle,” Mari pressed on firmly. “You’re never gonna measure up to the Alpha Queens already by his side: tall, Double-Ds, utterly gorgeous and intoxicating. You were never gonna win a head-to-head with girls like Sam or Neevie.”
“Mari!” I barked in surprise.
But Belle was already sliding off the bed, tears already running down her cheeks.
“Go to hell,” she seethed, teeth bared at her best friend.
And then Belle ran out the door.
