“FUCK!” I shouted at the top of my lungs. “FUCK! FUCK! FUCK!”
Rae quickly caught up alongside me and bent at the waist with her hands on her knees, panting from all the exertion.
I watched the SUV turn the corner and disappear from view, and then hot tears started rolling down my cheeks, blurring my vision. “We were supposed to be together again!” I wailed, throwing my hand out for emphasis.
“I’m sorry,” Rae said sympathetically. She also grabbed my shoulder and started tugging on it. “But there’s nothing you can do about that right now. We gotta go.”
“We gotta go AFTER them!”
“We will. I promise. But you’re buck naked and standing in the middle of the street and I’m not sure how far away those Carabinieri retreated. We have to get some clothes on you and then regroup.”
I angrily batted her hand off my shoulder, shaking my head. Moisture still blurred my vision as I stared at her, muttering, “You have NO idea what I’ve been through.”
“You’re right. I don’t. But I’d like for you to tell me.” She grabbed my hand and started tugging once more. “C’mon! Let’s go!”

Rae and I hopped back into the apartment through the gaping hole in the bedroom wall, the window glass in millions of tiny pieces and the exterior stucco quite blackened and scorched from whatever device the Italian S.W.A.T. team had used for forced entry.
Multiple Carabinieri and Polizia were dead on the floor, although not all of them. One of the men was groaning, and I rather roughly flipped him over onto his back despite his yelp of pain. Then I pushed his helmet and goggles up over his head and growled, “Who are you! Why did you attack us!”
“Qualcosa in Italiano che non ho capito,” the man babbled, something in Italian that I didn’t understand.
I looked over at Rae to check if she understood what the guy said, but she merely gave me a blank look.
“Who. Are. You?” I repeated slowly and roughly, grabbing him by his vest straps and shaking him none-too-gently, which made him once again cry out in pain. He didn’t seem to have any bite marks, but his riot gear seemed to have been blackened by Rae’s electric fireballs and there were two slashes across his arm that would’ve lined up perfectly with Ziyi’s claws.
“Carabinieri,” the man grunted, which was information I already knew given the patch across his chest.
“He’s Italian military,” Rae explained. “More than just a street cop. These guys get sent in for domestic assault missions.”
“Like assaulting us,” I muttered.
“Who sent you?” I asked, shaking the man again.
“Guiseppe Russo,” he stated blankly, staring up at the ceiling instead of at me. “Numero di serie uno, uno, cinque, due, sette--”
“Oh for cryin’ out loud,” I muttered, pushing him down against the floor. Shaking my head, I said, “Fuckit. Kill him. He’s of no use to us.”
Rae shrugged, set her fists together as if holding an imaginary baseball bat, and let her longsword slowly grow from her hands.
“Aspettare! Aspettare!” the man exclaimed, holding his hands up defensively. “Wait! Wait! I talk!”
Rae’s eyes became mere slits as she pivoted her wrists, bringing the pointy end of her blade right over his face. “Then talk.”
“We receive message,” the man stated in halting English, “that survivors from group of terrorists who escape us downtown last night… They… They hiding here, in this appartamento .” His eyes turned to Rae’s sword. “Very dangerous.”
“Last night?” I asked, looking at Rae for a moment before returning my attention to the soldier. “We weren’t even HERE last night.”
“But the others were,” Rae muttered with a grimace. She gave me a significant look. “My teacher was.”
“Ah, shit.” I made a face before looking back at the man on the ground. “What happened to the others?”
“I don’t know.”
I immediately raised my fist to summon an ice blade with which to stab him in the fucking face, but no ice blade came forth. I frowned and growled in frustration, not understanding why my powers wouldn’t work, but in the meantime, the man took my fist alone as threat enough, because he raised his hands again and babbled, “I don’t know! I don’t know! I wasn’t part of invasion team last night! I heard that some were killed and some escaped. But that’s all I know!”
Rae stood up straight and half-turned towards the gaping hole in the bedroom. “So there’s a chance she’s still alive. She could be one of those that escaped.”
“Assuming the terrorist group he’s talking about is your group of allies and not ISIS or something.”
Rae waved dismissively. “Let’s assume it’s them for now. This is the only lead we’ve got.”
I looked down at the soldier again. “Who sent the message tipping you off to us?”
“I don’t know.”
“Don’t know or won’t tell us?”
“I don’t know! I follow orders!”
“Does the name ‘Cao Wei’ mean anything to you?”
He blinked twice, his expression making it obvious that he didn’t have a fucking clue what I was talking about.
I scowled and looked back at Rae. “Even if he doesn’t know, let’s assume the Cao Wei sent them.”
“They are not numerous.” Rae smiled grimly. “It would be so easy for them to send in an anonymous message about terrorists, pull some strings, and get the Carabinieri to do their dirty work for them.”
“And then swoop in after we’d been softened up to snatch Ziyi and make a run for it.” I stood up and shook my head, gesturing at the man on the floor and suddenly feeling very bad about the way I’d treated him. “These guys are pawns. Innocent soldiers just trying to serve their country. He doesn’t know anything.”
“Then we don’t need him anymore.” Rae hefted the sword, flipped it upside down, and prepared to decapitate the dude.
“Please-please-please-please-please!” the man quickly exclaimed in terror, holding his forearms up over his face.
But I’d already reached up to grab Rae’s forearm. “Hey! Hey! Don’t kill him! I just said that they’re innocent soldiers!”
“He can tell them who we are, what we look like, how many there are of us, and most importantly: what we can do! He has to die!” Rae insisted.
“There were three other guys who ran away who can all tell their superiors the exact same information. But THIS guy here can tell those same superiors that we’re NOT terrorists, that we’re NOT the bad guys, and that we let him live!”
“Look around you. Dead cops and soldiers everywhere. We ARE the bad guys as far as they’re concerned.”
“We defended ourselves when attacked, that’s all.” I looked down at him. “You tell them that we defended ourselves when YOU blew open the wall and started shooting at us. That’s all. This is a big misunderstanding, there is a group called the Cao Wei that are the bad guys, and we let you live. ¿Comprende?”
“That’s Spanish.”
“He gets the idea.” I loomed over him. “I’m letting you live. Repeat that. Repitelo.”
“You. Let. Me. Live,” he stated. “Not bad guys. Bad guys you say are… uh… ‘Sow Way’.”
“Close enough. Remember that. And remember that I’m letting you live.”
“You are letting me live.”
I nodded. And then I kicked him in the head.
Hard.
Rae rolled her eyes. “Let’s hope he remembers all that after you gave him a concussion.”
“You’d rather I picked him up and sent him walking right away?”
“No, no.” Rae held her hands up. “Better that he’s unconscious while we get out of here sooner than later. Shit, where’s Hannah and Madi?”
“I’m right here,” Hannah said from behind us, and we turned to find that the dirty-blonde lingerie model had gotten dressed and was presently hugging herself as she leaned against the doorjamb. She looked a little worse for wear, with disheveled hair, some explosion soot smudge on her face, and a small cut on her cheek that was still bleeding just a bit.
“You’re hurt! And you’re shivering!” I said with mild alarm as I walked over with my arms open to hug her, although I hesitated when she took a step back into the living room while staring at me with wide eyes.
“What ARE you?” she asked nervously, flicking her gaze from me to Rae and then back. “I mean, did somebody roofie me or did I really see Jade turn into… into a… snake-thing? A-and y-you were throwing fireballs? And-and why is that guy over there missing his fucking head? A-and… a-a--…”
I went ahead and wrapped up Hannah in a hug, cutting off her babbling by holding her face to my chest. She sobbed and collapsed against me, at first just burrowing herself deeper into my chest before her arms popped out and she hugged me back. And I shushed her soothingly while stroking her spine, patiently letting her keep sobbing and sobbing until she seemed to have cried herself out.
Rae stood beside us, a stern look on her face. “We’ve gotta get out of here, Aksel.”
“It’s so strange to hear that name again,” I muttered.
“What?”
I shook my head. “Nevermind.” After first looking down at Hannah, I looked around the living room and then asked aloud, “Where’s Madi?”
“Gone,” Hannah mumbled. “I texted her a few minutes ago. She grabbed her phone and some clothes, ran out the back, and hailed a cab. She’s on her way to Lucia’s.”
I nodded slowly, needing a moment to remember that Lucia was the production assistant from this evening’s photo shoot.
“You should probably go join them,” I told Hannah.
“I want to stay with you,” she whimpered, holding me closer.
“We’re about to go on the run from the cops. You don’t want to get mixed up in this,” I reasoned.
“I’m already mixed up in this,” she argued. “Bad guys with guns are trying to kill me.”
“They’re trying to kill us, not you,” Rae interjected. “Aksel’s right. You’ll be safer with Madi and Lucia.”
“But what if they already know who I am?” Hannah whined. “Can you promise me that the bad guys won’t hunt me down? I’ve seen the movies. I’m just a loose end for them to tie up, and if I’m with Madi and Lucia, I’ll be completely defenseless. They’ll murder us in our sleep.”
“I… uhhh…” I frowned and looked at Rae. My first instinct had been to assure Hannah that she’d be perfectly safe, but at the same time, I didn’t truly know how the Cao Wei operated, and I couldn’t be sure they wouldn’t try to eliminate the girls as a loose end.
Rae looked equally unsure. “Go to the cops, then. They’ll protect you.”
“Those cops?” Hannah pointed behind me at the dead bodies on the floor.
I made a face and waggled my head, trying to think of something to say. But before I could, the sound of police sirens started filling the night air in the distance, rapidly coming closer and closer.
“Time’s up,” Rae pronounced. “Let’s go.”

We were all thoroughly exhausted by the time we finished climbing up to the fourth floor of our original apartment building. Rae punched in the keypad code, we went inside, and Hannah and I immediately flopped down onto the couch, with Hannah tucking herself up against my side beneath the crook of my arm.
Meanwhile, Rae first checked for any messages and then went walking around the place, scrutinizing the windows and doors for any sign of entry to make sure that the place hadn’t been disturbed while we’d been away. And eventually she came to stand before us with her arms folded across her chest.
“I still think you’re better off going back to your production team,” she told Hannah. “The last thing we need is for people to believe we’ve kidnapped a world-famous supermodel.”
“I’m not a ‘world-famous supermodel’,” Hannah countered. “Madi’s world-famous, but I’m barely Insta-famous.”
“Still, your production team is going to put pressure on the Italian police to find you and track us down.”
“The Italian police already have a dozen-plus reasons to track us down,” I sighed. Then I drew my thumb across my neck while adding, “One of whom is missing his head.”
Rae rolled her eyes. “As if decapitating the guy makes any real difference to simply stabbing him.”
“You’re proving my point. We’re already on the run from the authorities, whether Hannah’s with us or not.”
“Depends on whether or not the media gets hold of this,” Rae groaned. “Like, what if Madi starts posting shit on TikTok about her friend getting kidnapped by shapeshifting monsters with magical powers?”
“Did she see any of that stuff?” I wondered aloud. “She was still out in the living room when all hell broke loose.”
“Even if she did see any of that stuff, she won’t post about it,” Hannah countered. “She’s world-famous, remember? She won’t post anything about shapeshifting monsters with magical powers. People would think she’s crazy.”
Rae and I looked at each other and mused on that.
“I’m betting she won’t have told Lucia anything about monsters or cops at all, actually,” Hannah continued. “It would be just like Madi to make up some bullshit about a date gone wrong and just wanting to crash with Lucia for a night.”
I frowned. “That apartment WAS furnished by your production team, right? No matter what bullshit story Madi comes up with, it won’t explain why there’s a gaping hole in the wall where a window used to be and a whole bunch of dead cops on the floor.”
“Then she’ll tell them a half-truth. She met a guy, brought him back to her place, but it turned out this guy was some kind of wanted criminal. Riot cops busted in, there was a fight, the guy got away and she went running to Lucia. All of it true enough, all of it scandalous enough that the production team won’t want any bad publicity, and the whole thing will get covered up from the media. Certainly nothing about shapeshifting monsters with magical powers.”
I gave Rae a hopeful look. “Makes sense.”
Rae silently pondered that with narrowed eyes.
“Which brings me back to my original question,” Hannah continued, sitting up and turning to face me. “What ARE you? Are you a shapeshifting monster with magical powers?”
For a moment I thought about Chezhou’s ability to morph into a water entity as a way of escaping the rat demon’s enchanted shackles, but I quickly dismissed that thought from my head. “I’m not a shapeshifter,” I stated firmly.
“But you DO have magical powers.” Hannah hugged me close and stared up into my eyes, saying fervently, “I saw you create that ice shield to block the bullets from us.”
“He has very limited magical powers,” Rae interjected. “Powers that he only started using a couple of days ago, although the ice shield was new.”
Again, I thought about my time as Chezhou in tenth-century China for a moment, but I shrugged and said, “Pretty much. It’s a long story, but I’m really new to this mythological creatures and elemental powers thing myself. Rae on the other hand…”
“I know what I’m doing,” Rae stated with a little smirk, presenting the same kind of confident, almost cocky fake-it-’til-you-make-it demeanor she’d displayed from the first time we met. Within the span of a few seconds, she transformed her clothing from the nondescript outfit she’d been wearing since we’d left the apartment into the same fancy dress she’d worn to dinner with the girls, adding smugly, “And yes, I’m a shapeshifter.”
Hannah looked a little frightened of Rae and shrank back against me. “Can you… uhhh… also turn into… a snake?”
Rae snorted and shook her head. “Of course not. Well, actually, I could. But no, I have no interest in being a snake. That was Jade’s thing.”
“Ziyi’s thing,” I corrected softly.
“What?” Rae gave me a blank look.
I sighed, feeling mournful as I thought over the past month of my life spent in such blissful harmony with the woman I loved. “Her real name is Ziyi.”
“When did she tell you that?”
“Long story. Not important right now,” I dismissed. “What’s important is that they have her, and that we need to get her back.”
Rae gave me a serious look. “I’m not trading the relics for her, whatever her name is. I won’t do that.”
“I know you won’t. I get it.”
“What relics? Who has her?” Hannah interrupted. “Can someone please tell me what the hell is going on?!?”
I took a deep breath and looked over at Rae, my expression silently asking, Do you wanna try explaining it all?
I don’t know why I thought she would. After all, she’d gone out of her way to NOT explain anything to ME in the beginning. Why would she ever go out of her way to explain things to Hannah?
Because Hannah’s a lot hotter than you, and because Rae wants to have more sex with her.
‘Well… point taken.’
But Rae was already shaking her head, and she gave Hannah an apologetic look. “I still think you should return to your production team. I know you’re scared about the bad guys coming after you, but I think it’s more likely you’ll just be ignored. Just corroborate Madi’s half-truth about meeting up with a guy who turned out to be a wanted criminal and the cops busted in yadda-yadda-yadda. And if you ARE leaving us, then the less you know the better.”
But Hannah tucked herself back against my chest, pulling my arm down around her midsection even tighter. “I’m not leaving,” she stated firmly.
“Fine then. You explain to her what’s going on,” Rae told me as she threw up her hands and started walking away. “I gotta plan our next move.”

Our next move ended up literally that: our next move.
With Ziyi captured, our apartment’s location could potentially be compromised, so we grabbed what few belongings we had and then walked about a mile away to check into decent but not luxurious hotel. It wasn’t the Presidential Suite of the Four Seasons Seattle, but it was the best Rae could do this late at night on such short notice.
The room itself seemed equivalent to that of a Best Western room back in America, not as dumpy as a Motel 6 but not as high-end as a Marriott. There was a single queen-size bed and no other furniture except for a desk/dresser combo with a single chair. You wouldn’t want to put two people into the cramped bathroom at the same time, and the vanity was barely wider than the sink. But we could - and would need to - move again in the morning. All we needed to do tonight was remain safe and get some rest.
I let the girls take showers one at a time first before I went in to shower myself. There had only been two towels in the bathroom, so I ended up having to reuse one of theirs. And when I came out with the towel wrapped around my waist, I found that Hannah had raided my suitcase and was wearing one of my solid-color undershirts without a bra underneath to serve as pajamas. It made sense, given that we’d run out of her battle-damaged apartment too fast for her to grab any of her own clothes, and shapeshifting Rae obviously wouldn’t have any clothes for her to borrow.
Hannah sat back against the headboard with her knees together and folded to the side. I briefly glanced at her erect nipples denting out the front of my shirt and then smiled. The Ax Effect was doing its thing, and she gave me a rather inviting smile in return before she seemed to remember that we had more pressing concerns at the moment.
“So lemme get this straight,” Hannah began, addressing me. “Rae is a fox spirit who can both shapeshift and has different illusion powers, plus she’s a fire elemental who can throw what you call ‘electric fireballs’, which… wouldn’t that make her an electricity elemental?”
Both of us looked over at Rae for a moment, but the blue-haired girl seated in the desk chair ignored us while she continued fiddling with her phone.
“Well, electricity isn’t an element as far as I know,” I explained. “And I’m not entirely sure how the two overlap myself. Maybe something about supercharging particles being related to both fire and electricity? Both generate energy and heat?”
“Whatever.” Hannah furrowed her eyebrows. “And Jade is actually a thousand-year-old snake shapeshifter and metal elemental whose real name is Ziyi, and you only know this because you somehow traveled back in time to inhabit the body of your distant ancestor to spend a month fighting the bad guys with her until your body got killed in battle and you time traveled back to the present right before you came into the room and went to kiss her?”
I nodded. “Pretty much.”
“And both of them joined up with you because you’re the supposed Chosen One of the great Chinese Azure Dragon, the only one who can unlock the gates to the four ancient relics - two of which you’ve found so far - that will ultimately lead you to The Golden Dragon.”
“The Faguang Long, in Chinese.”
“Whatever. And the bad guys kidnapped Jade - Ziyi - as leverage to try and force you into giving them the two ancient relics that you’ve found so far?”
“That’s what we assume.”
“And they already took out Rae’s teacher and her group?”
“That’s what we assume.”
“And they’ll keep hunting you and Rae down until they get what they want?”
“Almost certainly.”
“And they’ll try to kill us.”
“Well… yes. I’m apparently the only one who can unlock the gates to The Golden Dragon, and they want me dead to prevent it from being found. And yeah, they’ll probably be trying to kill you too.”
“Maybe I should go back to the production team.”
“That’s what I’VE been saying,” Rae interjected, looking up at us.
“Aww, but you’d miss me.” Hannah gave Rae a coy over-the-shoulder look, the kind she often did in magazines that would make pretty much anyone’s heart go aflutter.
“I’d miss you more if you were dead, and I’m trying to keep you alive,” Rae sighed with exasperation as she set her phone down onto the desk, clasped her hands together, and gave Hannah an almost pleading look.
“Well that’s where you two come in,” Hannah reasoned. “On my own, I’m a sitting duck, and if some… Sow… ‘C-A-O’… Are you sure it’s not pronounced ‘Cow’?”
“Yes, I’m very sure it’s ‘tsao way’,” Rae enunciated before repeating, “Cáo Wèi.”
“If a ‘tsao way’ agent tries to kill me, then I’m dead,” Hannah continued. “But you two have special powers, so maybe I’ll stand a better chance of staying alive. I’ve seen what you can do in a fight, Rae. You’re freaking amazing!”
“Thank you!” Rae replied brightly with a beaming smile.
“And you, Aksel, you have… some… water powers.”
“Well I used to have more but--”
“Right, right. You said you were an outright superhero in Ancient China.” Hannah gave me a gentle smile akin to that one would give to a senile old Vietnam veteran telling tall tales of his jungle victories against numerically superior foes.
I pursed my lips to pinch down on the impulse to insist, ‘I was.’
“Hey, I’m not knocking that ice shield that saved my life from a hail of bullets,” Hannah stated a little more appreciatively, raising both hands in the air.
“Well you do have… other… powers,” Rae pointed out with waggling eyebrows towards me.
I widened my eyes to glare at her, silently saying, Shut! Up!
“What other powers?” Hannah asked curiously.
“Nothing. It’s nothing,” I muttered.
“His other superpower is sex,” Rae drawled.
“Well THAT I already knew,” Hannah giggled before favoring me with another inviting smile. “I really mean it when I say that nobody else makes me feel the way you do.”
I blushed and shrugged (while simultaneously flexing my arms and clenching my abs to make them more prominent), which made Hannah giggle again.
Meanwhile, Rae added, “I’m dead serious. Other than his water abilities, Aksel’s superpower is sex. Surely you’ve noticed that he gets stronger when he’s having sex, like being able to pick you up and carry you around the room without getting tired. He doesn’t go soft even after cumming. And he can keep going and going multiple times without needing to take a break.”
“Well… yesss…” Hannah admitted, looking confused. “But is that really a superpower?”
“Is it really so much harder to believe than shapeshifters and elemental abilities?” Rae asked, raising her right hand and then snapping her fingers. In the blink of an eye, she suddenly disappeared completely, having made herself complete invisible.
Hannah squealed and half tried to back-crawl up the headboard. Even I yelped in surprise, having never actually witnessed Rae pulling her invisibility trick in front of me before.
The top of the mattress suddenly depressed as if a knee had been placed on it, although neither Hannah nor I could see anyone doing it. Over the course of three seconds, Rae let herself gradually shimmer back into sight, the impish pixie smirking as she parked her face only two feet away from Hannah’s.
“Best start believin’ in ghost stories, Ms. Hampton. You’re in one,” Rae teased.
Hannah immediately snorted and shook her head at the joke. Then she looked back at me and asked, “But what exactly does that do? I mean, okay, your superpower is sex. That’s great for me and all, because the things you do to me in bed are just… mmph… But how does that help you fight bad guys?”
“Well to be perfectly honest, my water powers seem to be stronger and work better after I’ve had sex,” I explained.
“And that’s where you come in,” Rae said with a smile. “I mean: I’m never having sex with him. But since you’re here, you--”
“No!” I interrupted, holding an index finger up and pointing it warningly at Rae. “I am NOT going to ask Hannah to--”
“Oh! I get it!” Hannah said brightly. “I let you pork me, your superpower gives you magic energy, and then you can make ice shields and stuff that will keep me safe!”
“Exactly!” Rae exclaimed with a grin, clapping her hands once together. “Otherwise, to be honest, I would’ve insisted on you returning to the production team.”
“No. No.” I pointed a warning at Rae again while adding, “I-I-I can find other ways to charge up.”
“Really?”
“Hannah means more to me than…” I paused and turned to give the blonde a serious look. “You mean more to me than just a… an energy power bank. I would never ask you to just… just let me pork you… for the sake of charging myself up to go into bat--”
“Oh, you wouldn’t have to ask me,” Hannah interrupted me dismissively. “I’m just happy to have you fuck me as often as humanly possible. There’s something about you… something… intoxicating. Every time I’m around you, all I can think about is spreading myself open and begging you to ram it in me. Even right now. Even though we fucked a coupla hours ago and then had all these riot police bust in and nearly kill me and everything. Just seeing you standing there looking all hot and sexy and wearing nothing but a towel…”
Hannah reached forward, grabbed the end of the towel, and snatched it off me to reveal my naked body with an erection already rising in eager anticipation of what was to come.
The dirty-blonde babe’s lips were parted. Her breathing came in soft pants. Her bright-green eyes were shining. And her nipples were diamond hard and denting out the front of my t-shirt. She leaned back against the headboard while raising up the hem of my shirt, revealing that she wore no panties beneath. And she slowly stirred a finger around her own love button while taking her time to raise her gaze from my erection, up my six-pack abs, across my firm pectorals, and finally to my face.
“You should know that I have this effect on women,” I explained. “I always have. What you’re feeling is part of my superpower. I’m not mind-controlling you, just to be clear. But your raw, sexual attraction to me isn’t entirely your own.”
“He calls it ‘The Ax Effect’,” Rae added with an eyeroll.
Hannah giggled and then smile serenely. “I don’t care what it’s called or how it works,” she intoned softly, slowly returning her gaze back down to my prick. “All I care about is getting that gorgeous dick inside me, starting right now.”
With that, the leggy lingerie model slid herself into a seated position at the side of the bed, reached out to grab my hips, and tugged me towards her. She then slipped off the bed into a squatting position, sliding her right hand around my thick meat and stroking it several times. And when I groaned in audible appreciation for her efforts, she giggled happily.
“Charging you up with extra energy is just a bonus,” Hannah stated with a smile.
And then she fed on me.

“That’s so cool…” Hannah breathed with sparkling-eyed interest at the ice-crystal snowflake slowly spinning in the air about an inch above my upright palm. Reaching out with her right hand, she took hold of my wrist and directed it to the left, to the right, a bit up, and a bit down. The spinning snowflake remained about an inch above my palm the whole time, regardless of where Hannah moved my hand. And then she reached out to touch the tip, pressing just hard enough to stop the snowflake’s rotation.
