“Makes sense,” Hannah remarked.
More text rapidly started scrolling in, so Rae held her phone in front of her face, scanned quickly, and translated, “Apologies for not contacting me sooner… Their group got hit by the Carabinieri too… They dumped their phones… Went off the grid… This morning my teacher made contact with the shopkeeper and he gave her my new Whatsapp I.D. number.”
I nodded slowly, none of this information coming as any surprise.
“Asking to confirm I still have ‘the package’. That’s you, Aksel,” Rae continued. “Also asking what is our condition.”

Rae started tapping quickly, evidently writing a response that included more than just ‘we’re not dead’. Leaning forward, I frowned in confusion watching her type keys with various Chinese characters on them that didn’t necessarily match up to the Chinese characters that ended up on screen. It almost looked like she was building Chinese characters a few paintbrush strokes at a time.
She pressed send, and a few seconds later, more text started scrolling in. Rae glanced up at Hannah, saying quietly, “She’s asking why we have a… well… a ‘plus one’.”
Hannah smirked. “I’m guessing she didn’t use the term ‘plus one’.”
“Well no, but she didn’t use a derogatory word, either,” Rae said while she started typing back. “I had to stop and think of what the English translation would be. Something akin to ‘baggage’.”
I frowned. “Sounds kinda derogatory to me.”
“She’s not trying to be derogatory. Just… efficient. And no offense, Hannah, but as far as they know, you’re not exactly mission critical.”

I looked up at Rae with arched eyebrows, and without even looking back at me, she raised her hand and said, “Be patient. She’s probably just formulating a plan.”

“Yeah about that.” I turned to Rae. “You used something similar back when we first captured… well… captured ‘Jade’. You were able to bind her wrists and ankles with glowing cords.”
“I did,” Rae confirmed. “But what that mysterious woman used was far more advanced. I can make short term bonds made out of electricity that mute a shapeshifter’s ability to transform, but nothing on the length or scale of the lasso she used to entrap Ziyi. Did you see the way it made multiple ropes that kept wrapping around and around her?”
I nodded grimly. “She didn’t stand a chance.”
Hannah frowned. “Are you sure there’s no such thing as an electricity elemental?”
“Well not in Chinese Wuxing,” Rae stated plainly before turning to me. “But I’ve told you before that the Chinese aren’t the only ones with supernatural beings. Given where we are and the woman’s Italian accent, I’d bet that whoever captured Jade… Ziyi… I’d bet that she’s actually a demigoddess. Specifically, a demigoddess of Zeus.”
“The Greek God of Sky and Thunder, hence the lightning-slash-electricity powers,” I said.
Hannah pursed her lips. “I thought you said she was Italian, not Greek?”
“The Italian name for Zeus is Jupiter, but he’s the same entity as Zeus,” I pointed out before looking at Rae. “But why would an Italian demigoddess be working with the Cao Wei to recover ancient Chinese relics?”
“No idea, but we’re on their home turf, and there could be more of them working against us,” Rae said grimly.
I made a face. “You mean now we have to deal with the Cao Wei AND Greek/Italian demigods at the same time?”
“Afraid so.”
“Ugghhh…” I groaned, rubbing my head before sitting up straight. “Wait, one more thing: Italian demigod lady demanded that I bring the relics to them. She acted like I should know who they are and where they are. Do you know the answers to those questions?”
“No, I don’t. But I’m asking my teacher if she does,” Rae replied, typing rapidly. A moment later, she sat back on her heels, nodding slowly. “She does know who the woman is, and she’ll tell us more when we meet up.”
“We’re going to meet up?” I asked, feeling a sense of relief at the idea of having more allies. For a month in Imperial China, it had felt like Ziyi and I were on our own, the two of us alone against the Forces of Evil. Rae nodded. “She’s sending instructions for where and when to go.”
“Thank god…” I sighed, exhaling slowly as I lay back down and set my head on the pillow.
