I arched an eyebrow. “And did you sleep with her?”

I smirked. “Is she any good?”
That blush rose up into Rae’s ears. “She’s the best.”
I chuckled. “We’ll see about that.”

Hannah and I had a continental breakfast with Rae at the one-bedroom apartment’s circular dining table. I asked if the others were in the adjacent apartments on the same floor, but Rae rather cryptically gestured with one hand palm-up, replying, “Something like that.”
“So what’s the plan?” I asked as the meal was coming to an end. “My goal is to rescue Ziyi, but your boss wants us to move swiftly in order to recover the next two relics before the Cao Wei can bring more forces to bear in stopping us. She said the Zhuque feather is next, right? Is it hidden nearby? Is that why we’re in Venice?”
“No, it’s not in Venice. The feather is back in Rome.”
I frowned. “Then why are we here? Shouldn’t we be going back right away?”
“We came here because things got a little too hot back in Rome, if you’ll recall, and we needed to escape and this place is a refuge,” Rae explained patiently. “Plans are being set into motion back in Rome for our return, so we’re staying here for now. But relax: I’m not going to keep you cooped up in this apartment all day.”
“That’s a relief.”
Rae wiped her face with her napkin and then set it down on the table. “C’mon. Let’s go.”
“Go? Where?”
Rae tapped her nose and grinned. “You’re on a need-to-know basis, and-- EEP!”
She just managed to duck the half-eaten bagel I’d been eating. Fox-spirit reflexes and all. And her laughter was so good-natured that I didn’t press her any further on the subject, instead deciding to just trust her and follow wherever she might lead.
When the three of us departed Appartamento 314 and stepped out into the third-floor hallway of the fifth-century Venetian apartment building, I half-expected us to walk through some kind of invisible magic portal into the Tesla-showroom Mission Control space once again. After all, that was how we’d gotten to the apartment in the first place. But instead we merely got to the stairwell, walked down two flights to get to the lobby, and headed for the street exit instead of to the boat dock exit.
We emerged into an incredibly narrow alleyway, so narrow that I thought if I spread my arms out, I’d be able to touch the buildings to either side. Rae immediately turned to the left, walking purposefully, and then she made a right onto a wider boulevard, and then another right that led us to a pedestrian bridge over the nearest canal. She acted as if she’d been here a hundred times, but recalling her fake-it-’til-you-make-it demeanor in Rome, I remarked, “You seem to know exactly where you’re going.”
She glanced back at me over her shoulder, immediately knowing what I meant, and she gave me a pearly-white smile, saying, “This time, I do know exactly where I’m going. I’ve been here several times with Tianshi.”
“Good to know.”
It was still the first time for me and for Hannah, though. We walked hand-in-hand, with Hannah getting occasionally distracted gawking like a tourist at one spectacular sight or another. We passed an incredible Gothic church with a large bronze equestrian statue in the plaza outside. Some of the pedestrian bridges over the canals were quite picturesque. And there were colorful varieties of shops to see, including a women’s clothing boutique that Hannah just had to drop into and buy a few new outfits.
But in the end we left the hustle and bustle of the main city behind, coming out onto the Riva degli Schiavoni at the southern end of the main Venetian island. There were a number of boat docks, and Rae led us directly to one of them. A sunburnt-tanned old Italian man stepped off a small fishing boat, the kind with an open cockpit beneath a white hard-shell canopy and a couple of outboard motors at the stern. He and Rae exchanged pleasantries in Italian (when did she learn how to speak Italian?) before the old guy departed, but not before flashing me a wink with an expression of jealousy for being in the company of two beautiful young women.
Rae took charge of piloting the boat (when did she learn how to pilot a boat?), and led us out into the Venetian Lagoon. The girls were dressed casually with linen shirts, sunglasses, and capri pants. Their hair flew in the breeze as we cruised around the eastern tip of the island and turned north. And Hannah went to go have her Titanic moment standing at the bow with her arms out and me holding her from behind.
Standing at the bow wrapped up in my arms turned into kissing at the bow wrapped up in my arms. But when the boat hit a wave and bounced into the air, making Hannah briefly shriek in my ear, we took our seats and resumed sightseeing.
I think it was an accident, that Rae hadn’t steered us into that wave on purpose.

“Every night in my dreams, I see you, I feeeeel you. That is how I know you go-- HEY!” Dong abruptly jumped off my shoulder like a cliff diver to avoid the small electric fireball zooming through the air that would’ve hit him square in the face.
I chuckled, Hannah asked, “What happened?” (since she couldn’t see Dong), and Rae blushed.
‘Wait, I thought you were intangible. Why would you need to dodge one of Rae’s fireballs?’
It was instinctive, the little gecko muttered without reappearing on my shoulder.
I chuckled, snuggled Hannah a little closer against my side, and let my hand drift up to cup her breast. She giggled and raised her hand to help me hold her boob and then offered me another kiss.
There were a number of islands scattered throughout the lagoon and Rae started playing tour guide, naming various distinguishing features and describing certain semi-comedic historical events that supposedly took place at some of the locations. Fishing was also exceptionally good, although the “best” spots were supposedly known to only the most experienced local fishermen (who would be happy to take tourists there for a small fee, of course). And I noticed a large number of fishing boats parked around various places around the lagoon.
But Rae took us away from the crowds and around the mouth of a small inlet where no other boats were nearby. She dropped anchor within the little cove, shut off the engines, and then propped herself with one elbow against the conn.
“Okay, Waterboy. Do your thing.”
I blinked. “‘Waterboy’?”
“You were a superhero in Imperial China, weren’t you? You need a superhero name, but ‘Iceman’ sounds too cool for you, and ‘Mr. Freeze’ reminds me of Arnold in that stupid Batman & Robin movie. You can’t talk to fish, so no ‘Aquaman’.”
“Hey, I did make a trident back in Imperial China.”
“Sure you did. Anyways, ‘Waterboy’ hits that sweet spot for me.”
“Whatever,” I drawled, shrugging at Hannah, who shrugged at me.
“Tianshi wants you to practice your water elemental skills. Hannah fucked your brains out this morning, so you should still be pretty charged up, right? Or you need her to bend over and spread her cheeks to top you off?”
I scowled at Rae’s crudeness, although the idea of Hannah bending over and spreading her cheeks did appeal.
I vote for spreading cheeks.
‘Dude, shut it.’
“I vote for spreading cheeks!” Hannah enthused giddily.

She knows you’re the Chosen One of Qinglong, and that our success or failure - perhaps our very survival - may depend on you unlocking the full potential of your elemental abilities.”
“Makes sense,” Hannah chimed in.
“Well… Maybe…” I conceded.
“You’ve claimed a wide variety of abilities that you haven’t yet been able to perform in front of me: ice daggers, swords, floating platforms… transforming your entire body into water. And while I’m more inclined to believe you merely dreamed up being a Middle Kingdom superhero, she said she has reason to believe you’re telling the truth.”
“I am telling the truth,” I insisted.
Rae waved me off dismissively. “Not rehashing that argument. If you can, then awesome: you can. If you can’t, well I never expected otherwise, so no disappointment.”
I rolled my eyes and sighed.
“Bro, seriously,” Rae said rather kindly. “I hope you prove me wrong. I’m naturally skeptical, and even Tianshi will tell you that despite this magical world of monsters and demons that we live in, time travel is NOT possible. Novikov Self-Consistency and all that. But even though I believe you experienced nothing more than an incredibly vivid dream, I’m willing to grant the possibility that you dreamed of very real powers and abilities that lie dormant within you, just waiting to be discovered and unleashed. So that’s why we’re here.”
I glanced around the little cove. “Here?”
“Well we obviously can’t have you experimenting in the middle of downtown Venice where everyone can see, so Tianshi told me to find a quiet, out-of-the-way spot, and have you practice… well… out here.”
The music of “Gonna Fly Now” from the Rocky soundtrack started playing.

Rae winked at me and adopted a faux Southern accent while encouraging, “You can do it!”

I couldn’t do it.
No, seriously, I couldn’t do anything.
Well, that’s not quite true. I could make water shields and ice shields and little crystal snowflakes that slow spun around an inch above my open palm (and anal lube, apparently), but I was still utterly useless at creating anything resembling an offensive weapon.
In fact, I was pretty useless at even creating defensive weapons - including basic water shields and ice shields - until Rae started throwing electric fireballs right at my face and pretty much forced me to throw up defensive water shields in order to protect myself.
That little discovery prompted Rae to create static “firewalls”: her version of my water shield, although they weren’t particularly good at blocking anything. Still, the idea was to give me an elemental barrier for which I needed to break through. But the first time I tried to punch my fist through the firewall while hoping my body would magically manifest some sort of ice gauntlet or other protective barrier around my hand, no such protective barrier arrived and I scorched my hand pretty bad.
Fortunately, sex is my superpower, and Hannah was more than happy to learn that giving me a blowjob right there in the boat would actually heal my wounds. And by the time I basted Hannah’s tonsils with all my pent-up baby batter, my hand was as good as new.

“If I throw a fireball at you, your powers recognize that you’re in danger and manifest just enough to keep you from getting burnt - assuming you’ve had sex recently enough. But anything short of saving your skin… nothing. And even that, you still got scorched when you weren’t topped off with sex.”
“For now,” Hannah interjected while sitting sideways across my lap with her arms around my neck. “His powers aren’t manifesting for now. Not yet. I’m sure Aksel will discover his full potential in time.”
“Thanks for the vote of confidence,” I said, mussing up her hair. That earned me a giggle and a quick kiss. But when she pulled back, I sighed and added, “But I’m not feeling so sure.”
“Let’s take a break,” Hannah suggested.
“Sex break?” Rae asked with a twinkle in her eye.
Hannah laughed and said, “I meant a regular rest break: eat a snack, drink some water, decompress. But if Aksel’s feeling remotely horny, I’d be happy to--”
“No, no. I’m fine, I’m fine,” I insisted, waving her off before glancing up at Rae. “Not completely useless,” Hannah insisted, pecking my cheek. “You didn’t even need magic superpowers to stop us from falling. And defensive superpowers are still better than NO superpowers.”
“True,” I conceded. “But it’s just so frustrating to feel like I know how to become a living weapon of water, to know what moves to make, to know what things to focus on, only to have… nothing… absolutely nothing… actually happen.”
“You’ll figure it out,” Hannah encouraged. “I know you will. I believe in you.”
“Well that makes one of us.”
“Maybe that’s the problem: you need to believe in yourself as well.”
“I DID believe in myself. Back in Rome, I started executing moves in the full belief that I’d be able to do them. Didn’t work back then.”
“Well you didn’t have ME by your side back then.” Hannah hugged herself around my shoulders, closed her eyes, and stated solemnly, “I do believe in Aksel. I do. I do.”
Rae chuckled. I smiled. And I kissed Hannah’s cheek in thanks for the effort at the very least.
“I do believe in Aksel. I do. I do,” she repeated, still with her eyes closed. “I do believe in Aksel. I do. I do. I do believe in Aksel. I do. I do.”
“Okay, okay. That’s enough of that,” I said with a sigh, rubbing Hannah’s leg and then grabbing her boob when she didn’t immediately open her eyes.
She squeaked and laughed and cupped my hand against her naked breast, leaning over the side of the boat again as she wriggled. I dug my foot into the side of the boat to keep us from falling again, but she resisted me when I tried to straighten us both back upright.
“Ooh! Fish!” Hannah exclaimed, pointing down into the water.
I glanced down and indeed saw a few fat seabreams, quite visible in the calm water with their bright pink and red color. Without really thinking about it, I extended my hand with two fingers pointed and my thumb tucked in, swirling it in a counterclockwise motion.
The water started moving.
One large seabream in the middle froze in place, uncertain what to do. Faster and faster I swirled my fingers. Faster and faster the water swirled, becoming a wide whirlpool around the trapped fish.
Hannah gasped. Rae muttered something in Chinese. I pivoted my hand palm-up and slowly raised it, and Hannah started hopping in my lap with excited squeals as the whirlpool elevated into the air, forming a V-shaped tornado funnel of water, carrying the seabream with it until the fish was right in front of our faces.
“Holy shit,” I muttered in surprise, abruptly opening my fingers. The airborne whirlpool dissipated within seconds, dropping the seabream back into the water. And then I gawked at Rae and Hannah both, with Rae’s expression of disbelief mirroring my own.
But Hannah was beaming, and she hugged me close once again.
“I do believe in Aksel. I do. I do.”

Okay not going to like, that whole Niagara infomercial thing Dong did was comedy gold. And if nothing else Hannah is definitely proving herself to be a very good source of inspiration bothat the start as well as the end. Having some lube for some impromptu anal sex was certainly something unexpected but I imagine that we will probably get more from that in the future. And then there is the way Aksel is apparently getting a feel for how to use his abilities if the whole thing with the fish is any indication.
