I explained before that letting Charlie ‘establish his turf’ actually helped keep other guys away. So I got in the habit of letting him do that sort of thing with me as a sort of shield. She took a deep breath and then looked up at me. “The girls have been telling me for months all the times they noticed you feeling… off.”
I blinked. “They have?”
“Belle and Neevie? We’ve been co-girlfriends since the beginning. Of course they’ve been trying to keep me in the loop. Burnt breakfast. The time you called after me but didn’t hear my reply. General occasions where they’ve seen the pain in your eyes whenever you miss me. Belle, obviously, was a little more blunt about it, but Neevie’s had her own way of letting me know you missed me.”
“Knew and did nothing,” Eva muttered.
Sam sighed. “Like I said: I know I haven’t been a very good girlfriend to you. I haven’t been the kind of girlfriend you deserve. I’m sorry for that.”
I shook my head. “You don’t need to be sorry. You made clear from the beginning that your academics would be your priority, and I always knew what I was getting into with this relationship. I really don’t need you to change.”
“But -I- need me to change, for MY sake as well as yours.” Sam took another deep breath to collect herself, and she swallowed thickly. “-I- want to be with you more often. I want to be with my friends more often. This first semester has been really hard, and it’s not even over yet. We still have to get dressed, get out of this room, and go study for Finals.”
“Finals…” Eva groaned like it was the filthiest word in the English language.
Sam nodded and kept her attention on me. “I’m really glad you’ve been so supportive for the last four months or so, and I’ve only been able to accomplish as much as I have because of it. But something’s gotta change. We can’t keep doing this. Our love is a rose bush that’s not getting enough water. I know that. The flowers are withering without attention. Slowly, and perhaps so subtly neither of us notices, but it’s happening all the same. I can’t keep letting you swallow your pain for my sake. I can’t keep letting you try to hide from me how much you miss me.”
I winced. “I’m not… hiding how much--”

“I know you’re hiding how much my absence hurts you. I’ve always known,” Sam stated wearily. “I know you’ve been slowly crumbling, little by little. But if I keep going the way I’m going, we are going to lose what made us special.”
I sighed and pursed my lips, unable to deny what she was saying.
“There’ve just been so many things to do and so little time,” Sam sighed.
“There are always gonna be too many things to do and not enough time to do them,” Eva warned.
“Subject to the choices I make about what things need to be done and the time I choose to spend on them,” Sam insisted. “I know that balance has been a little out of whack. These last few months have been really hard, but it’s almost over. This has been a rough patch, I know, but it won’t last forever. The semester ends in five days. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
“And then what?” I asked dubiously. “Everything magically changes after the semester ends?”
“Everyone says the first semester is always the hardest: meeting new people, adjusting to college life, figuring out new routines. But next semester doesn’t have to be the same. I’m established now. I’ve made new friends – and yes, they’re friends. But I’m getting used to the pace and I’m less worried about building new connections and will be able to scale back to just maintaining connections, you know? Sam pursed her lips and kept her focus on me. “So long as you were still making the effort to hide your true feelings, I felt reassured that things weren’t that bad.”
“So Neevie tells me,” I muttered.
“It’s easy for me to tell myself everything’s alright when you’re putting up such a good front. Maybe you should be needy every now and again to remind me I should pay more attention to you.”
I sighed and shook my head. “You know I don’t want to be a burden on you.”
“And -I- don’t want to be a burden on you. I love you so much for putting up with me this semester, but I promise you that things will be better after Finals Week ends.”
“With that promise and a nickel,” Eva drawled, “Matty’d have a grand total of five cents.”
Sam pursed her lips and shot Eva a weary look.
Eva shrugged. “Hey, if Matty’s not gonna look out for his own best interests, someone should, and at the moment it doesn’t seem likely to be you. Something-something lawyers are self-centered people.”

I squeezed her hand back and took a deep breath. “I do. I have faith in you and will continue to have faith in you until you give me a reason to lose that faith.”

“I want to believe you, but as Neevie told me earlier, it remains to be seen whether or not you’ll follow through.”
“You’ll see,” Sam assured me. “When have I ever NOT followed through on one of my promises?”
I thought about that and nodded my agreement. “I love you enough to believe.”
Sam smiled. “That’s all I ask.”
“But I’m not the only one you have to convince,” I warned her.
“Totally. Belle’s always been the skeptic, but I thought Neevie understood, at least up until last night.”
“She said she gave you an earful.”
“Shape up or get the fuck out,” Sam confirmed. “But again, it wasn’t only about my relationship with you, but about my commitment to The BTC. We’re supposed to be a team: three girlfriends dedicated to giving you everything you need in the same way you’ve always been dedicated to giving us everything that we need. “I can’t,” I agreed.
“So that brings us back to what Neevie and I spent most of our time talking about,” Sam stated with renewed enthusiasm. “I’m coming back to The BTC. I’m making this special group of girls – and one very special guy – the top priority in my life. I know that all of you have put up with me being a shitty girlfriend for too long as it is, and I’m going to make it up to everyone. You’ll see.”
“Be careful the promises you make,” Eva warned. “I know your heart’s in the right place, but don’t overpromise and underdeliver.”
Eva’s voice cracked at the end of her statement, which gave me pause. And from the way Sam sat up straight and frowned, I wasn’t the only one to catch it.
“Spoken from personal experience?” Sam asked with raised eyebrows.
Eva waved her off dismissively. “The usual. You don’t need to hear another sad story about me and Kai. Besides, the focus of this conversation should be on you and your relationship with Matty and The BTC.”
Sam and I glanced at each other, and Sam smiled while replying, “Probably, but now you’ve got us both curious.”
Eva’s eyes got a little moist and she looked away from us. I instinctively scooted close to her so that I could wrap my arms around her midsection and draw her in against my side before cuddling her close. And when she continued to pointedly look away from us, I murmured softly, “Don’t worry about it. There’s no need for you to talk about him if you don’t want to.”
“No, it’s alright,” Eva muttered before exhaling wearily. She patted my arm before extending her hand out towards Sam.
The blonde looked momentarily confused, but she put her hand into Eva’s. And Eva immediately drew her closer until she could put Sam’s hand into mine and squeeze them together.
“I’ve told you before that I know what real love is, and that what you and I share isn’t it,” Eva said quietly while looking back at me over her shoulder. “But what you two have? This is real love.”
I blinked in surprise while Eva squeezed my hand and Sam’s together again, glanced at my Aphrodite questioningly, and returned my attention to Eva.
The Hawaiian girl focused her attention on Sam. “I know Belle and Neevie have been complaining that you don’t spend enough time with Matty, that you’ve been a shitty girlfriend, and that he shouldn’t have to swallow his pain at missing you. All that stuff I can agree with. You have been a pretty shitty girlfriend.”
I blinked twice. “Is there a ‘but’ coming?”
“But I distinctly remember Luna questioning what you’d done to deserve Matty’s love and loyalty last night, and I remember scolding her and saying she doesn’t know either of you two well enough to hold that kind of judgment over you,” Eva continued. “I’m not saying that -I- know you well enough to judge you, either. But I know real love, and you two definitely have it.”
Sam smiled at Eva, and then her smile brightened as she turned to look at me. I imagined I had a similar expression on my face.
“From the day I met you guys, I saw the way you two looked at each other. I felt the bond you had. Love was the bedrock foundation beneath every single action you took together. So when Belle explained that you were Matty’s Head Girlfriend, my first thought was, ‘Yeah, that makes sense. They belong together. They’ll be together forever. The two of them against the world.’”
Eva had long since let go of our hands, but Sam and I still squeezed them together as we continued smiling.
“I never once thought you two would break up. I always knew you’d find your way back together again. I saw what Matty was doing for you, the dedication he put into being as supportive of you as he possibly could, despite the neglect – despite the time you chose to spend with other people instead of with him. He’s special like that. That’s love. That’s unconditional love – the key word being ‘unconditional’,” Eva insisted. “Matty’s love for you has never been conditional on the amount of time you two spent together. It’s never been conditional on pulling your own weight. It’s not even conditional on you keeping Charlie’s hand off your waist. Unconditional means unconditional. Matty will love you until the day you die and even beyond, no matter what. And I recognize that because that’s exactly the same way I feel about Kai.”
Sam blinked twice and then arched an eyebrow. “‘Feel’ about Kai? Or ‘felt’ about Kai?”
Eva’s face fell, and she swallowed thickly. I still had one arm around her and gave her a gentle hug while she took a deep breath. Sam and I waited her out. Eventually though, she spoke.
“‘Feel’. I still ‘feel’,” Eva said quietly into the middle distance, staring back into memory, into her recent past. She pursed her lips and rather bitterly added, “I hate his guts for no longer being the man I fell in love with. But the part of me that promised to love him unconditionally for the rest of his life? Yeah… that part is still there. Always will be. Unconditionally.”
I felt Eva curling in upon herself and let go of Sam’s hand so I could hug Eva with both arms. When I looked up, I found Sam smiling at us – well, smiling at me – until her attention returned to Eva as she reached out to gently give Eva’s forearm a reassuring squeeze.
But Eva was already shaking her head in the negative, her gaze still far away. I could see the shimmer of moisture covering her open brown irises, see the haunted expression on her face.
“You two have unconditional love,” Eva muttered quietly. “But unconditional love alone won’t solve everything. Unconditional love alone can’t keep you together. I’ll always unconditionally love the Kai I fell in love with. The only problem is…”
“Kai’s no longer the man you fell in love with,” I finished for Eva when her voice trailed off.
“Drugs took him away from me. It happened slowly. I didn’t realize it for a long time. I was the ‘boiling frog’, as Belle put it. Our parents saw it. Our bandmates saw it. But I was blind. I didn’t want to believe it.”
Eva shuddered, but rather than break down, she sat up straight and wiped the tears from her eyes. She took a deep breath, straightened her spine, and pivoted in place to both remove herself from my grasp as well as turn to face me instead.
“You know the moment I finally looked at Kai and realized I didn’t recognize the man I’d fallen in love with? His parents had kicked him out and he was staying with me at my house for a bit. He was emptying the dishwasher and pulled out a big steak knife. I saw him hold it up in the air and just sort of… stare at the blade for a second, you know? There was a gleam in his eyes, and that was it. That’s when I realized: I had no idea what Kai was capable of anymore.”
Sam’s hand slipped into mine, more clutching it for reassurance than affection, and I was quick to squeeze it back three times in a silent ‘I love you’.
“A normal human being putting away the dishes? Nobody ever thinks they’re gonna start stabbing people, or stabbing themselves,” Eva continued quietly. “But all of a sudden I couldn’t breathe. My heart was pounding. It was like that fight or flight instinct or something, triggered by him, as if he were a rabid animal. And I’d braced myself to either rush in and save him if he tried to hurt himself or run away in terror if he suddenly turned and came after me.”
When Eva’s voice trailed off again, Sam mumbled softly, “That’s a horrible feeling.”
Eva’s haunted eyes stared vacantly into the middle distance again – into her all-too-recent past. I let go of Sam, slid alongside Eva, and hugged her again. She shivered and clenched her teeth. I could see her walking the razor’s edge between collapsing into sobs the way she’d done before and keeping her shit together. She was trying hard – really hard – to not lose it. I wanted to tell her it was okay to let herself go and break down in my arms, that I would always be there to hold her. But I sensed her inner determination to fight through. And in the end, she took a deep, shuddering breath…
… and then lost it anyway.
Eva broke down in sobs, bowing her head as the tears burst forth. I waited her out while holding her tenderly, stroking her spine. Sam scooted over to hug her as well, and Eva broke down even further. She started bawling her eyes out as she buried her face into Sam’s upper chest – which was still naked by the way. And together, Sam and I kept our arms wrapped around her, content to do so for as long as she needed.
But Eva didn’t need that long. Once past the initial bursting dam, she went suddenly quiet and still. A few seconds later, she started panting hard, as if she’d been holding her breath for that entire time.
Still, she picked her head up and clenched her teeth together, fighting to collect herself. Her lower lip quivered. Her gaze was wild. And there was an unexpected… fear… in her brown eyes as she stared at me.
Terror, even.
“Promise me, Matty. Promise me,” Eva whispered, her raspy voice barely audible.
I blinked. “Promise you what?”
“Promise I’ll never have to feel that way about you,” she whispered desperately.
I looked down at her seriously, nodding slowly. “I promise,” I told her with clear, confident sincerity. “You will never have to feel that way about me.”
Eva gave me a weak smile. I could tell she was trying to make herself believe me, clearly still traumatized by that incident with Kai (and many other incidents, I was sure). But I knew that she wanted to believe me, and I could feel her racing heartbeat start to slow down. I went back to stroking her hair and cuddling her close. She turned to bury her face into my neck, snuggling herself as close as she possibly could to me while cinching her arms and legs around me in fierce desperation. And Sam continued to hug her from the other side as well.
I knew she was in pain. I knew she was still thinking about Kai.
Which is why her next words came as such a surprise.
“Don’t let the same thing happen to you and Sam.”
I blinked in surprise and pulled my head back to look down at Eva, my eyebrows furrowed in confusion. I glanced at my blonde girlfriend for a moment and then muttered, “Um, I’m not really worried about Sam coming at me with a knife.”
Eva shook her head like I didn’t understand. “I’m not saying she’s ever gonna come at you with a knife. But…”
Her voice trailed off as her lips quivered, she glanced at Sam, and then returned her gaze to me.
“I know you love each other. I know you always will. Your love for each other is unconditional. That I’m certain of. For all eternity.”
I smelled a ‘but’ coming, but I didn’t say anything.
“But unconditional love alone can’t keep you together,” Eva repeated. And then she sat up and turned to face Sam. “Matty will never betray you. It’s in his DNA. He will be loyal to you forever, even if it kills him. But if you keep doing what you’ve been doing this semester – if you don’t keep that promise you made about changing and making him a priority in your life – one day he’s gonna wake up and realize he doesn’t recognize the woman he fell in love with.”
Sam blinked, looking a little pale, the normally über-confident blonde suddenly looking rather unsure.
And then Eva’s eyes narrowed as she said quietly (and rather malevolently), “Break his heart, and you may very well need to worry about me coming at you with a knife.”

Eventually, the three of us got up to get dressed. While I would’ve been perfectly content for Sam to spend the rest of the day wearing nothing but my t-shirt that just barely managed to stretch around her expansive bosom and rode high enough in the back to expose some serious butt-cleavage, she made the practical decision to fetch some actual clothes from her dresser instead. Eva had brought a bag with a change of clothes as well. But all of my clothes were upstairs.
So long as Sam and Eva were both naked, I stuck around ogling all the T&A I could before paradise was removed from view, and only then did I get off the bed and put on my pajamas. The three of us then sallied forth from Sam’s bedroom, expecting to find the girls waiting for us in the living room with dry remarks about the noises we’d been making this morning.
But the living room itself was empty. So was the kitchen. It wasn’t that I necessarily expected the lives of the other girls to go on pause while Eva, Sam, and I had gotten into a threesome or anything. Still, I found myself glancing around in confusion, wondering, Where is everybody?
“They all left,” Naimh spoke up from behind me, a weariness in her voice that spoke of a weekend that had gone on far too long already. And I turned around to find my personal redhead leaning against the open doorway to her bedroom with her arms folded across her chest.
“Including Belle?” I queried in confusion. I wouldn’t have been surprised to learn that Isabela and Luna had gone back to their dorm rooms, but I couldn’t think of a good reason for why Belle wouldn’t have stayed here in the house.
“From your tone, I’m guessing you don’t mean they went to fetch coffee and pastries for the rest of us,” Sam drawled.
Naimh shook her head and sighed. “While the three of you were in there… talking… the rest of us were having our own discussion.”
“About what?” I asked.
Naimh sighed again with a look of resignation. “Isabela wants out.”

Not criticizing this from a writing standpoint, but the whole thing with Sam and her Pre-Law crowd is bullshit. Now, it is not unrealistic that Sam would do what she did, nor that she might be led to think her efforts were necessary, by a lot of self-important aspiring lawyer undergrads and pre-law professors who are not quite good enough to be law school professors. But Pre-Law is a completely superfluous major. You don't need to have ANY undergrad study in the law. You know who did NOT major in Pre-Law? Merrick Garland, the current Attorney-General of the USA, John Roberts, the current Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Clarence Thomas, the longest-serving Justice of the Supreme Court, Ro DeSantis, the current governor of Florida and Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, the last two lawyers to become president. ALL of those men had careers to satisfy anyone's ambitions, and attended top law schools. NONE of them majored in Pre-Law, all getting their degrees in English or Social Studies. Hell, they made a movie, "Legally Blonde" about a girl who gets into Harvard Law School based solely on her application, her high GPA and LSAT scores, and an actual Harvard Law graduate assured me that that part of the movie is not implausible. Long story short, Sam, especially in her first semester of college, does NOT need to be "networking" and devoting herself so completely to her "law career." Like many freshman students who take themselves way too seriously, it's plausible that she would do so, and very plausible that a lot of lecherous male and lesbian professors and TAs and upperclassmen TOLD the blonde with huge breasts that she needed to hang out with the aspiring law students and come to their department circle-jerks and whatnot and this was all essential to her career, but it's pure bullshit and she should be more than free to spend plenty of time with her friends. The one questionable detail to all of this is that she is supposedly extremely close with Beverly who IS an attorney and guided her on her career path, which means she should have given Sam better career advice for college. It is believable as a contrived bit of drama from an author who knows as much about the legal profession as he does Polish ("my moj skarbie" is redundant - it literally means "my my treasure"), but from a realism standpoint, there is nothing special about Pre-law studies to require enormous amounts of Sam's time. Honestly, she'd be better off taking a joke major like sociology or women's studies or education, to cruise to a 4.0, and devote that time in senior year to LSAT classes. A 4.0 from Cal Berkely and good LSATs will do more to get her into a top tier law school than any amount of "networking" and study groups in the Pre-Law department.

Or it could be that Isabela already started catching the feels. Maybe she uncharacteristically actually wanted more of his attention, but after the party came to the realization that his attention will always belong to the ladies who already have his heart. Devil’s Advocate.

However, it could be that, while Isabella joined in the condition that she was like Eva, not an official girlfriend. However, Eva's position is evolving. Perhaps she recognizes that and wants to cut that possibility of at the pass, as it were. Then again, it could be more about Luna.

One of the best chapters yet. Had not expected the wonderful interplay with Eva and Sam. Not sure what is next for Eva but am certainly looking forward to her continuing to grow and evolved Ditto Sam. Christmas with BTC will be fun. Luna leaving allows space for Skylar. Am all for that.

OK, one more thing. Was “Isabela wants out” a typo? Because from this reader’s viewpoint, she was never “in” the BTC. I was just warming up to her as a casual friend after her abrupt shift in behavior from hard-edged sexual predator. If it’s that Isabela want to cut ties completely even as friends, that’s a different story. In that case, this could lead to more of Naimh being upset because she doesn’t have any other close friends. If so, this will probably be the only criticism of Her behavior you will read from my keyboard. If Naimh would stop seducing everyone she has interest in as a friend into having sex with her and Matt, it might help with two issues. 1. Prospective friends might not get scared away. 2. She could limit the number of other women in Matt’s life to help ease some of her insecurity about her place in Matt’s life.

After the last chapter, I was wondering why a long-overdue heart-to-heart with Sam was co-opted for some more Eva time. Now I completely understand and support the sequence of events. A Matt/Sam one-on-one would have resulted in the status quo. With Eva present (someone who knows them and their issues but isn’t as deeply intertwined as Naimh and Belle) Matt and Sam were prodded out of their usual dance of “I’ll love you forever” and “Everything’s fine”. Hopefully Eva’s slightly removed viewpoint will help spur Sam and Matt into some necessary and vital changes to their interactions. Nice job!
