Naimh smiled at me kindly. “Relax. It’ll all work out. Just stand there and look pretty while I do all the talking.”
“I can do that.”

It was a Wednesday, but Finals Week was anything but routine. With none of us attending classes in accordance with our normal semester schedules, everything was a little bit off. But on this particular Wednesday, all four of us happened to be able to walk to campus together.
Sam held my hand for the initial walk from our house, but as soon as we crossed Bancroft, she gave me a quick kiss and then headed east down the sidewalk to get to her class.

As we approached the Engineering building, I started glancing around and down the various walkways that led to the plaza, wondering who we might randomly bump into before class. “Morning, guys. How’re you doing?” Isabela asked with a tight smile as she came to a stop a few feet away.
Naimh let go of my hand and stepped forward to give the lovely Latina girl a warm hug. “We’re really good, actually. Sam’s back and making an effort and Matty’s relieved she and I have sorted things out.”
“So Belle tells me,” Isabela replied, blushing and glancing down at the ground.
Although Isabela herself had decided to put some distance between herself and me or my house, Belle had insisted on remaining friends with her, and Isabela was more than happy to continue hanging out with my impish little pixie, albeit on her own terms. For example, I knew that Belle had gone to visit Isabela yesterday afternoon. And through Belle, we knew that Isabela felt rather anxious about seeing the rest of us again.
“Relax, Izzy. We’re not gonna bite,” I told her warmly when Naimh took a step back and I moved in for my own hug. “I’m not some jilted boyfriend who’s gonna resent you for dumping him. It’s cool. We’re cool.”
“Even though I did dump you,” Isabela muttered anxiously. She still had her arms around me, but the pressure of her grip slackened.
I took a deep breath and kept her in my arms while pulling back far enough to look at her face-to-face, although she pointedly looked away from me in shame. “I never push a girl for more than she can handle,” I told her steadily. “And I’m not upset with you for finding your limit and deciding that a continued relationship wasn’t for you. I didn’t make you go through a long, drawn-out conversation on Sunday, and we’re not gonna have a long, drawn-out conversation five minutes before we have to walk inside and take our E10 Final. Seriously, Izzy, we’re cool. No big deal.”
“You really mean that?” Isabela turned to look up at me with large brown eyes.
I gave her a reassuring smile. “You know I do.”
She softened, and when her gaze darted briefly to my lips, I got the impression she was about to kiss me. But instead she took a deep breath to collect herself and then nodded a few times. “Thanks, Matty.”
“You’re welcome,” I told her sincerely. Then I patted her shoulders and released my grip, letting her take a step back.
Isabela glanced at the Engineering building, looked over at Naimh, and then returned her attention to me. With a quirky smile, she suggested, “¿Vamos?”
I chuckled and waved her on. “I’ll be there in a minute. You go ahead.”
Isabela glanced again at Naimh before nodding, wrapping her arms around her midsection and then walking off towards the front doors.
My freckled redhead quickly hugged herself against my side, watching Isabela go before turning to peck my cheek. “See? That went well.”
“I was never worried about Izzy,” I replied, taking a deep breath and feeling butterflies in my stomach while holding Naimh’s waist and pulling it a little tighter against me. I glanced down at her and repeated, “We still on for lunch?”
She nodded and gave me another peck, this time on the lips. “I’ll be right here when you come outside.”
“Thanks. Love you, Squeakers.”
Naimh grinned and nuzzled her nose against mine. “Squeak-squeak.”

Isabela was not in her usual spot in the seat immediately next to mine, but only because of the Professor’s rules for taking our tests. Each student had to be separated from each other by at least one empty seat, so we’d spread out around the lecture hall and the lovely brunette was merely one extra seat over from me.
I gave her another warm smile and wished her “good luck” while getting myself situated. And then I started my usual routine of taking deep, calming breaths to collect myself and focus before starting up a three-hour exam.
But all that effort went to waste when a new sound made my heartrate suddenly quicken: the familiar sound of high heels rhythmically striking individual stair treads. I stiffened and turned to look over my shoulder just in time to see Skylar descending towards us, and I couldn’t help but look up at her with a sense of uncertainty. I didn’t want to think she was avoiding me – simply busy with all the things going on in the life of a grad student/T.A. living on her own. But the fact remained that I hadn’t seen her since the day she asked me not to tempt her into doing the same thing that had gotten her disowned from her family in the first place.
At least Naimh had talked to her on the phone and gotten her to agree to meet with us for lunch today after the E10 Final.

“We never thought you were avoiding us,” Naimh insisted politely. “You’ve just got a lot going on in your life. We understand.”
Skylar smirked. “I’m sure it crossed your mind that I might be avoiding you.”
“Crossed our minds, yes,” I admitted. “But Grad students have Finals too. Plus grading. Plus contract work.”
“Thanks for understanding.” Skylar sighed and sank deeper into her chair.
I’d thought she looked exhausted last week, but if anything she looked even worse today. Her hair was limp. Her skin lacked its usual shine. There were dark circles under her eyes. And even with her elbows braced on the table, her shoulders sagged.
“At least with the contract work, my papers aren’t due until the end of the month,” the blonde continued. “I can push them off for a week, but it’s likely I’ll spend my entire Christmas holiday sitting in front of my computer writing techpubs.”
“Well that doesn’t sound like a fun way to spend your holiday,” Naimh stated disapprovingly.
“I do not disagree with you,” Skylar muttered in resignation. “But a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.”
“I think you should come spend more time with us this holiday,” Naimh suggested. “You can’t spend ALL day every day in front of your computer.”
“I’d love to meet up every now and again to chat, but aren’t you all heading back home to spend time with your families?” Skylar asked.
“No home or family for me to go back to,” I pointed out. “I’ll certainly be here for all three weeks.”
“Right then.” Naimh’s eyes sparkled at Skylar. “You can come keep Matty company while I’m gone.”
The blonde snorted and shook her head. “Never thought I’d hear a girlfriend suggesting I come keep her boyfriend company while she’s gone.”
“I’m no ordinary girlfriend, and Matty’s no ordinary man.”
“I do not disagree with you,” Skylar repeated with a smile. “But surely you won’t be leaving him for ALL three weeks.”
“Most everyone is going home through Christmas, at least. My parents certainly want me sleeping under their roof for a while. Same with Sam and Belle. Even Eva and Lily are flying back to Hawaii. Our hometown isn’t so far away that Matty can’t visit, but he may need to get used to sleeping alone at night for the first time in a long time…” Neevie’s grin was all teeth. “… unless you’d be interested in--”
“I’m NOT going to keep Matty company in bed,” Skylar cut her off with an eye roll and an amused smirk.
“But after Christmas,” Naimh continued, “we talked all of our parents into letting us rent a big house together at Mammoth Mountain for New Year’s. Bringing the original BTC back together. You should come!”
Skylar blinked. “I’m not part of your original BTC.”
“Neither is Eva, but she’s still coming with us. C’mon, you’ll love it. You can meet Alice and Mari and Zofi and Holly. You can ski, right? I’ll bet you look adorable in a snow beanie.”
Skylar blinked again. “I doubt your high school friends would want a stranger crashing their reunion.”
Naimh smirked. “I’m certain they would welcome you with open arms.”
I coughed rather than state aloud the revision I would’ve made to my girlfriend’s statement.
“C’mon, Sky,” the redhead encouraged. “Take a holiday. It’ll be in January. No school. Get your techpubs turned in before your December deadline and then spend four nights with us in a winter wonderland. The place has a big hot tub…” She pretty much sang that last sentence.
Skylar’s eyes darted to me. “And I’ll bet Matty would love to see me in a bikini.”
“I do not disagree with you,” I drawled with a smirk.
“I’d love t’see ya in a bikini,” Naimh added with a grin. “And then strip off your bikini, too.”
Skylar grinned back at first, but then her eyes dimmed as she returned her attention back to Naimh. “I’m sure you and your friends will be eager to strip off each other’s bikinis and… enjoy the stress relief of being college students enjoying their holiday with each other.”
“As if you wouldn’t be a college student on holiday eager to get some stress relief?” Naimh teased.
Skylar pursed her lips. “I’ve told you before: that’s not our relationship. And don’t go trying to insist you’d keep things chaste around me. I wouldn’t want to be the wet blanket smothering your holiday.”
Naimh deflated, sighing. “Fine, fine. Just remember that you have an open invitation should you wish to accept it.”
The blonde smiled kindly. “Thank you for the offer. But moving on: you mentioned at the café that there’s a lot going on in your lives.”
“Omigoodness it’s been crazy,” Naimh breathed. “Isabela walked out. Lily came back to visit. I told Matty I wanted him to break up with Sam.”
“Wait, what?” Skylar sat up straight in surprise.
“I can give you the broad strokes.”
“Screw the ‘broad strokes’,” Skylar scoffed. “Details. I want details.”
Naimh lit up with her ‘Ooh! I get to gossip!’ face while Skylar leaned forward on her elbows, her expression making clear that she was far more interested in getting those details than she was in eating the untouched hummus wrap or sweet potato chips still on the plate in front of her.
Naimh likewise showed little interest in her lunch, leaning forward with her arms folded across the dining table. My freckled redhead’s emerald-green eyes sparkled as she smiled, spending the next twenty minutes happily sharing those details, proceeding to describe (with very little restraint) pretty much everything that had gone on with everyone over the past week since she and Skylar had last seen each other: from Sam to Eva to Lincoln’s Party and Charlie to me seeing Lily again to Izzy leaving to Luna still coming over to work on cosplay costumes to studying for Finals.
Meanwhile, I worked my way through my pastrami sandwich and curly fries, significantly more interested in stuffing my belly than in rehashing all the girl-drama going on in my life. Even after I’d finished my meal, the girls kept nattering on, showing no signs of remotely slowing down let alone stopping.
As the viscous fats and oils of my heart-attack-on-a-plate meal slowly soaked into my stomach, I felt the weariness of a long day combined with my post-Final adrenaline crash start to make my eyelids feel heavy and my mind go blank. And without really thinking about it, I sauntered over to Skylar’s sofa, propped my elbow on the armrest and the side of my head against my palm, and closed my eyes for just a second.

Many, many seconds later, some faint buzzing sound at the farthest range of my hearing slowly burrowed its way past my ears and through my ear canals to gently prick the surface of my subconscious mind. Slow, steady, and consistent in both volume and pitch, the sound was the exact opposite of my alarm clock’s infuriating electronic screech, and so it gently stirred my sense of awareness rather than abruptly jerk it away from a state of tranquil slumber.
Well, it wasn’t the exact opposite of my alarm clock. The ‘exact’ opposite sound would’ve been more accurately described as soothing and somnambulant, like an Enya song or the rhythmic sounds of waves crashing on a beach. This sound was more akin to the electrical static of a car radio not quite tuned to the right channel, occasionally interrupted by brief moments of silence.
I couldn’t immediately identify the source of that sound, and in the corner of my mind, some dim curiosity to find out is what ultimately stirred me awake. My eyes remained closed for some time, my brain sluggishly positing hypothetical guesses as to the sound’s origin and then discarding the answers like a middle schooler plugging and chugging random numbers into an Algebra problem.
Eventually, I woke up enough to be a little more proactive in my problem-solving. I took a deep breath, stretched out my arms and legs, and cracked my eyelids back open. But rather than continue to wonder as to the source of that buzzing sound, when my vision took in the unexpected environment surrounding me, the available computational power of my brain refocused its processes on piecing together my final moments of consciousness in order to answer the questions “Where am I?”, “Why am I here?”, and “What time is it?”
I quickly realized that I was in Skylar’s apartment – and more specifically on Skylar’s sofa - lying on my side with one hand dragging on the floor and crusty drool in the corner of my mouth.
I realized that I was here because I’d fallen asleep after lunch. Studying for Finals and back-to-back-to-back nights with three girlfriends in my bed (all of whom with a vested interest in reminding me just how much they loved me) had taken their toll on my body – not to mention enduring a weekend that had been both physically and emotionally draining. Although I needed replacement calories, the heavy meal I’d consumed had been quite sleep-inducing, so I really shouldn’t have been surprised I’d passed out.
And a glance at the wall clock told me that I’d been asleep for over an hour.
There was no sign of the sofa’s owner, nor was there any sign of my Head Girlfriend. Given the time, Naimh must’ve left the apartment to go take her afternoon Final, perhaps only a few minutes ago.
And then I suddenly realized what the faint buzzing sound was:
The sounds of a shower running.
And was it just my imagination, or were the sounds somewhat louder than they should’ve been behind a closed door?

Alas, it was not to be.

The smart thing to do would’ve been to let go of the doorknob, silently back away, and return to the sofa. I might even be able to feign sleep and pretend like nothing had ever happened.

So on the one hand, I might as well open the door and have a good look. I was gonna get caught anyways, right?
But I already said there was no way I was gonna do that.
I knew what I needed to do.
I was sure.
So I didn’t hesitate any further.
My hand was still on the doorknob, so I simply closed the door. I didn’t even try to do it silently. I went ahead and pulled the door shut against its doorjamb, letting the wood contact wood with an audible [thunk]. I didn’t twist the knob, letting the latch snap through the strike plate with an audible [click].
There was no way Skylar wouldn’t know I’d come to close the door.
She would most likely assume I’d peered through the crack to peep in on her.
She’d invited such a situation by leaving the door cracked open in the first place – this time most assuredly NOT by accident.
The die is cast.
No big deal.
I returned to the sofa to wait.
