When Skylar looked up at her, Naimh nodded her understanding. And then Skylar sighed and started fiddling with her fingers in her lap.
“One time when George wasn’t around, Millie told me she didn’t want him to be lonely after she was gone. Wanted him to find love again, to move on, to be happy. She didn’t mean for ME to take her place in his heart or anything like that. It was more of a general, ‘I hope he meets a nice lady someday’ kind of thing. I was still an undergrad, and George was fifteen years older than me and in a completely different place in his life. But once the thought occurred to me about taking Millie’s place at George’s side, of finishing that family house, raising children, and building a life together…” Skylar’s voice trailed off as she closed her eyes, bowed her head, and clenched her fists. And then she finished softly, “I was an immature little girl.”
I reached out and took Skylar’s hand with mine. Naimh did the same on the other side, and together, we both gave Skylar’s hands gentle squeezes. I listened to him telling her that she was the great love of his life and that nobody could ever mean to him what she did, even while she told him she wanted him to move on and find happiness again. I held her hand, reassured her that I’d help make sure that George would be happy even after she was gone, and never quite explained my exact intentions for how I would ensure that her husband would be able to move on after her death.”
Skylar went quiet again. Naimh and I waited patiently, content to let her find the words in her own time. But when Skylar pulled her hands away from us, both Naimh and instinctively gripped tighter, not letting her withdraw.
She was crying when she looked back up at us, a world of pain and regret in her stormy blue eyes.
“I loved Millie. Please believe me,” she whispered hoarsely.
“We believe you,” I assured her, squeezing her hand again.
“I didn’t want her to die. She was my Aunt Millie, my idol, the one I’d always gone to for advice. And yet…” Skylar’s mouth gaped open as she stared at me with a lost expression on her face, unable to form the words. She looked simultaneously embarrassed and guilty and afraid I would somehow start to hate her, even though I already knew this story. But she was clearly reliving the guilt, and I didn’t want to see her in this kind of pain anymore.
So I spoke up, stating matter-of-factly, “You felt relieved when she died. Everyone had known her cancer was terminal, with no hope for recovery. It wasn’t that you hoped she’d just get it over with or anything like that, but you couldn’t help but feel a sense of relief when it was finally done. That was a completely natural feeling to have, and you don’t need to feel guilty about it. You were glad for an end to her suffering.”
But Skylar shook her head, muttering, “I was glad that could finally make George mine.”
“But it didn’t turn out that way.”
Skylar shook her head and started sobbing. With a sudden jerk, she pulled her hands free from both me and Naimh and buried her face in her palms. Naimh and I both sandwiched her with hugs again, trying to reassure her with our presence. And with an urge to get it over with so that Skylar wouldn’t have to relive this pain any longer than she already had, I turned to my girlfriend and started explaining the rest.
“George cut Skylar off after Millie died,” I told Naimh. “She understood that he needed time to mourn, so at first she simply gave him some space. She buried herself in her classes… Hung out with her friends… But then about three months after the funeral, she went to visit him and tried to kiss him and he pushed her away. Insisted the whole thing was a mistake that he regretted. Skylar said she wanted to take Millie’s place, to give him the family he’d wanted. She could give him everything he’d dreamed of, basically.”
“But he turned her down,” Naimh concluded glumly.
I nodded. “Their affair had not been discovered. If she’d simply given up, gone back to school, and never said a word, maybe nobody would have ever found out.”
“But she couldn’t give up,” Naimh muttered with a wince.
I shook my head, and Skylar’s bawling in our arms suddenly increased.
For a minute, Naimh and I simply hugged her between us. I’d been through this once before, only Skylar and I had been alone then. I’d seen her pull through it then, so I was fairly confident she’d pull through again. And this time, she seemed to calm down even faster than before.
When Skylar started to sit up straight, I reached to the nightstand for some tissues and brought over the whole box. Skylar dried her eyes and blew her nose, and Naimh and I both scooted over a bit to give her some space.
After five or six tissues had been wadded up and dropped into a pile before her crossed legs, Skylar looked up at us with red-rimmed eyes and just seemed over the whole thing now. “George finally went to my dad to confess when I refused to stop pestering him. Dad was righteously pissed at him, of course. George was the older man, and I was his baby girl. But when Dad came to confront me, I admitted that I had seduced George, and then Dad felt betrayed by me. More, I’d betrayed Millie. It leaked through the family, my circle of friends found out, and all of a sudden I was the harlot that seduced my own aunt’s grieving husband. I’d fucked him in the next room while my cancer-stricken auntie lay dying in bed. Like… 'Skylar, what the fuck were you thinking?!?’ My friends ostracized me. Dad wanted nothing else to do with me. Only Bas putting his foot down and insisting that his twin sister be at his wedding made THAT happen at all.”
Skylar shook her head, looking angry now.
“The whole thing had been wrong from the beginning, but I couldn’t help myself. I couldn’t stop. I didn’t WANT to stop. I thought George was going to be my Happily Ever After. I thought a life with him would be everything I’d dreamed of. But some dreams don’t come true.” Skylar scowled, glared at Naimh, and muttered bitterly, “So there. That’s the story. Any questions?”
Naimh looked a little taken aback at the vehement tone in Skylar’s voice, but there were tears running down her own cheeks and nothing but sympathy on her freckled face. “Oh, Sky…”
And then both Naimh and I hugged Skylar again.

We knew from the start that she did something horrible, and later she admitted trying to steal a family-member's husband. We just didn't know the details. And yes, you're taking it too seriously. (BDA just knows how to write characters that people care about.)

I’m still seeing Matt making promises to his “girlfriends” making them feel “they are the one he loves the most”. Like Luna was concluding last chapter, there’s going to be problems. As for Sklyer, yea she made mistakes, but more importantly has she learned from them, or will this be another Basic Instinct situation.

Since a lot of readers (myself included) have continuously voted Skylar as one of their favorite ladies, I’m wondering if anyone else is feeling like the boiling frog. We are slowly being exposed to more and more of Skylar’s backstory from lonely girl disowned and ostracized by nearly everyone she knew, through finding out she fell in love and had an affair with a married man, and finally to finding out the man was her dying aunt’s husband. I find myself having an internal tug-of-war. I’ve been wanting Skylar to be one of Matt’s true loves, but in real life, I despise her actions. Am I taking this too seriously? And I’m not letting good ol’ George off the hook either. It takes two and he deserves to spend eternity having a foley catheter inserted, inflated, and then yanked out of his urethra every hour, on the hour.
