“I don’t know what’s wrong with her,” I moaned, planting my elbows on the workbench in the garage and burying my eyes in my palms.

That HAD to be it. I was certain. So I’d tried stating simply, “Lisa, please wake up.”
She didn’t wake up.
“Lisa, wake up!” I instructed a little more firmly.
She didn’t wake up.
“LISA! WAKE UP!” I howled.
She didn’t wake up.
There was no light in her eyes… literally. The OLED screens of her eyes were black like a switched-off television. For lack of a better term, Lisa was… dead.
My chest shuddered as I fought the urge to cry, at least at first. But after thirty seconds of holding my breath, I couldn’t take it anymore and just broke down bawling.
I was a grown man… crying over Lisa’s dead body.
You’re being ridiculous, man, I told myself. She’s a robot. An android. She’s a collection of metal, plastic, silicone, and circuits that you stitched together yourself. Would you break down crying over a broken Dyson vacuum? A Samsung washing machine? She’s not real. She was never real.

Trying to understand the mechanics of how this all worked, I’d already interrogated Moemi for explanations of how she had become “a real girl”. The time for “just going with it” was past, and I needed answers. But Moemi had none.

“I-I’m not sure yet,” I stammered, holding her shoulder. “I’m not sure.”

Moemi looked confused. “You… appreciate it?”
“I appreciate it,” Lisa repeated with a sigh as she sat down on the edge of my bed, hugging herself and looking rather forlorn.
“‘Appreciate’ it…” Moemi mumbled, clearly puzzled. “Appreciate it…”
Lisa likewise looked a little puzzled. “Am I NOT supposed to appreciate Wyatt’s effort to make me feel better?”
“Sumimasen,” Moemi apologized, blushing again. “I did not mean to suggest that you should NOT appreciate Wyatt. He is our master and of course you should appreciate him.”
“No… no… you’re right.” Lisa frowned and hugged herself a little tighter, slowly shaking her head. “I’m not real. Only then did I realize her midsection had started glowing as well, spreading outwards from her crotch as the internal illumination crept down the length of her legs and up her belly until it met the glowing light spreading downwards across her chest.
I could almost hear music swelling around us as I witnessed the miracle happening before me. I suddenly felt weightless. It felt like I was being transported to another world… another universe… or maybe some enchanted Disney movie. I felt no sensation of movement, and yet I couldn’t feel the bed beneath me anymore. The light emanating from Lisa’s body intensified, a radiant luminance that washed out everything else in view, blinding in its brilliance. For a moment I couldn’t see, I couldn’t feel, as my world was filled with her light.
And then the light began to fade away, revealing the world around me once again.
My bedroom.
My bed.
My Lisa beneath me.
Once again… REAL.
