It was quiet in the car on our drive back home. No excited celebratory chatter following our “victory” over the bad guy. No breathless recapping of everything that had taken place. Not even an explanation to Lisa about us chasing her down the highway in a magicked LAPD SUV before bashing down the front door with a battering ram.
Helena merely drove in silence with Katarina riding shotgun. The twins held each other’s hands over the center console, giving each other a moment of reassurance. Now that everything was over, it occurred to me that Helena had realized it could’ve just as easily been Katarina who had gotten kidnapped.
Lisa sat in the middle of the backseat, sandwiched between me and Moemi. Lisa seemed to still be in shock, and she wouldn’t stop shivering even though both of us were hugging her fiercely. And all five of us were contemplative, lost to our own thoughts.
We were exhausted by the time we got home, parked the Explorer (sans LAPD paint job and lights) in the garage so it could disappear overnight without being noticed, and walked inside. Physically, each of us was fine. After all, the girls could magically refresh their bodies as well as mine (although that energy still had to come from somewhere, and they would need to both sleep and recharge their batteries overnight).
But nothing could cure our mental or emotional exhaustion. Well, the android girls with supercomputer brains probably weren’t mentally exhausted, but they certainly seemed emotionally exhausted. And even as that thought occurred to me, I found myself shaking my head in mild disbelief that the plastic-and-metal sexbots I’d originally built with my own two hands felt emotional exhaustion.
The five of us collapsed on the couches, feeling worn out. I put my feet up on the coffee table and slumped in my seat, with Moemi tucked under my left arm and Lisa curled up under my right. Helena frowned and asked, “Don’t do what?”
“Drink beer.”
Helena blinked. “Drinking beer bothers you?” she asked dubiously.
“Moemi started it,” Katarina pointed out.
“Moemi’s not drinking. Wyatt is.”
Katarina’s eyebrows furrowed. “Annnd you don’t mind Wyatt drinking but you mind me and Helena drinking?”
“Because Wyatt’s human,” Helena stated quietly, recognition in her eyes. “And we’re not.”
“It’s not that,” Lisa muttered, shaking her head.
“Because we’re sexbots, just like you,” Katarina clarified. “Only NOT just like you.”
“Because we can drink beers,” Helena continued. “We can eat food. We can shapeshift into other people. And the two of us drinking beer reminds you that you can’t.”
I hugged my girlfriend to my side reassuringly and said, “But you can apparently turn a pile of shit like Chet into a literal pile of shit. That’s certainly something none of the other girls has been able to do so far.”
“Trade you,” Helena offered to Lisa with a grin. “I’ll give you the ability to drink beer in exchange for ‘turning dude-bros into literal turds’.”
“But I don’t even know HOW I did it, and I have no confidence I’d be able to do it again,” Lisa whimpered, closing her eyes and then turning to bury her face into the crook of my neck.
“You did what you had to do when you needed to,” I said reassuringly. Handing my beer to Moemi, I then used both arms to squeeze Lisa tight. “I believe you can do anything you put your mind to.”
“Do you believe I can become truly human?” she asked softly, keeping her face tucked against my chest. She took a few deep breaths, pulled her head back, and looked up at me with moisture-filled eyes. “Do you believe I can become a full part of your world?”
I blinked twice. “You ARE a full part of my world.”
“Am I?” Lisa shook her head sadly. “When was the last time we went out for a nice dinner date?”
I frowned, knowing full well that we’d never been out on a dinner date. Lisa couldn’t eat, remember? And we both knew how weird it would look for us to sit down at a restaurant table being waited on by servers who would be bound to notice that Lisa never put a bite of food into her mouth.
“There’s more to being a part of my world than going out on dinner dates,” I told her seriously.
“Perhaps. But not being able to eat food is just one of many reasons why I feel like I’d never be able to be everything you need me to be, to be a… a ‘complete’ woman in every way.” Lisa shook her head sadly and murmured softly, “For example: I’ll never be able to give you children.”
My eyes went wide. “Well… Ah… To be perfectly honest--”
“I know, I know. You told me before you weren’t really interested in raising a family, and that it was a particular sticking point with one of your ex-girlfriends. ‘Why buy a four-bedroom house if you never want kids?’ she’d asked.”

But after the laughter settled down, I studied Lisa carefully, asking, “Would you really want to bear my children if you could?”

I blinked and pursed my lips. Taking a deep breath, I exhaled slowly before shaking my head and saying, “That’s honestly not something I’ve considered for a long, long time. You know I never had a great relationship with my parents, and I’m not convinced I’d be a very good father. But while my answer right at this moment would be an unequivocal ‘no’, who knows what the future holds?”
“Fair enough, and I’ll give you a break by tabling the whole ‘having kids’ discussion,” Lisa said with a mild grin. “But that still doesn’t change the fact that for all my magical abilities, I’ll never be fully human. I can’t eat or drink. I can’t use the toilet.”
“You’re not missing out with your inability to use the toilet,” I interjected.
Lisa shook her head sadly. “I can’t even travel with you to far off places on vacation because I need to come home every night to recharge my batteries.”
I frowned. “I’m sure we can engineer a portable charger we could bring with us on vacations. Or even… I mean… You girls can conjure up an LAPD Ford Explorer for a day. Can’t you snap your fingers and create a magicked bed charger for a night at a time?”
“Well… probably…,” Katarina agreed. She furrowed her eyebrows, snapped her fingers, and a wireless charging station just like the one built into the beds suddenly appeared on the living room floor.
“See?” I gestured at the device.
Lisa shook her head. “If only it were so easy to give myself the ability to eat and drink. Maybe you should take the twins out on some dinner dates. At least they can fill the empty holes in your life that I can’t provide for you.”
“I don’t have any empty holes in my life. I’ve never been disappointed that I couldn’t take you out on a dinner date, and I only wish I could now because you want that.”
“Doesn’t change the fact that you could… with them.”
I frowned, “Come now, Lisa. Please don’t be jealous.”
“I’m not jealous,” she insisted.
“Yes you are,” Helena said softly, her gaze steady and her lips pursed.
“Just like you’re jealous that we can shapeshift,” Katarina added.
“And you were jealous at first that I had an olfactory sense,” Moemi pointed out.
“I think it’s only natural to feel like you’re an older model being surpassed by the latest and greatest advancements,” Helena remarked.

“You’re really WAY too hung up on this eating and drinking thing,” Helena groaned. “I’m just saying, I’d personally choose ‘designed by Wyatt to be his most perfect mate’ over ‘ability to eat but nothing more than the twin blondes you designed to be his big-titted playthings’.”
I frowned at the HellKat twins. “Please tell me you understand you both mean more to me than big-titted playthings.”

“For the eating and drinking thing, we get it,” Helena replied with a sigh.
“And the shapeshifting thing,” Katarina added.
“Don’t remind me,” Lisa groaned.
“But those things aside,” Helena continued quite seriously, “you’re still the one that Wyatt truly loves.”
Lisa blinked twice through moist eyes and looked up at me. I stared right back, stroked the back of her head, and nodded in confirmation. “She’s right. I love you, Lisa. Of my own free will.”
She gave me a shy smile. “I know you do.”
“So don’t worry about the eating and drinking thing. Don’t worry about the shapeshifting thing. They’re cool abilities - don’t get me wrong.” I winked at the twins before returning my attention to Lisa. “But cool abilities alone don’t make you perfect for me. It’s everything about you that’s perfect for me.”
“Because you designed me to be that way.”
I shook my head. “I designed what I thought would be my perfect mate, but to be perfectly honest, you didn’t turn out the way I thought you would.”

“There are certain things I’ll never be able to give you, Wyatt, not the way a real woman could.” Lisa took a deep breath, sat up straight to perch herself on the edge of the couch cushion, and then sighed while looking back at me.
I furrowed my eyebrows, waiting for her to continue.
“Chet was right about one thing: I’m not human. I’m just a living sex doll. And at the end of the day, that’s all I’ll ever be.”

“Of course. I love you, remember?” I told her sincerely. “You’re upset - perfectly understandable given the ordeal you just went through today - and I want to do whatever I have to in order to help you feel better. Speaking of which, I have an idea…”

“-I- need me to change. To find a way. To find another loophole or something.”

I sighed and narrowed my eyes. “It’s not just about being able to eat and drink.”
Lisa turned to stare at the lines of code, shaking her head slowly. “No, it’s not.”
“You want to be more human,” I stated knowingly.
Lisa sighed. “I’m such a cliché. I’m Pinocchio. I’m Data from Star Trek. I’m Ariel from The Little Mermaid. All I want is a pair of legs to truly become part of your world.”

“I know. I get that,” Lisa assured me. “Which is why we would be very careful about how we proceed. It’s not like there isn’t a standard procedure for this kind of thing. Download a copy of her present A.I. into a DevTest environment, run through a battery of varying simulations, work out the bugs, and execute UAT with safety backups you can revert to if anything goes wrong. I’ve already road-mapped a testing plan.”
I blinked twice. “A copy of her present A.I.? That brings up all kinds of weird existential questions - like… would such a backup be a separate version of her? Would it be… alive the way that she is? Would we need to terminate that version of her when we were done testing?”
“We wouldn’t activate the backup - just keep it stored. I’ve thought this through!”
“I don’t know the exact lines of code that impact Moemi’s sense of shame, and I certainly don’t know the exact lines of code that give HellKat their ability to eat and drink.”
Lisa gestured at the screen, and a moment later, Helena’s code appeared on the monitor immediately to the right. “The key differences are here somewhere. The coding that gives them the ability to biologically shape their bodies differently from the way Moemi and I do it is in there… somewhere.”
“The coding that might perhaps give you the ability to form a womb…” I ventured quietly.
Lisa pursed her lips and glanced away, but I quickly took hold of her chin and turned her face back to me.

“I know you never wanted children,” she muttered softly.

“Neither do I… yet. Neither of us has found a solution yet.”

“But maybe we can try. You can’t be afraid of ‘what if’ and let that scare you into not even trying in the first place. You’re an Engineer. Designing something, building it, and testing it is what you do! Trial and error. Experiment, revise it, and try again. That’s what got us here, isn’t it? I wouldn’t exist otherwise.”

As soon as we opened the door to the garage, it became clear that yes, GARY had turned itself on and was in the middle of a build. I felt confused, of course, because I knew I hadn’t sent any new printing plans to the machine. But then Lisa and I stepped up to the printer and looked through the window, and Lisa immediately clapped her hands over her mouth as she gasped in shock.
I could relate. I felt pretty shocked myself.
But then I also felt a warm sense of joy spreading throughout my entire body… throughout my entire being. I didn’t care how GARY got started making it. I didn’t stop to wonder why. It all made perfect sense to me, so without hesitation, I opened the door and took out the small little piece of jewelry that GARY had just printed for me.
It was a fat diamond engagement ring.
Perfect.
Without a second thought, I got down on one knee and asked, “Lisa, my love. Will you marry me?”
She immediately burst into tears.
“Yes!”
