“Right. I probably should’ve checked there first,” Eva muttered.

Eva found her sense of humor enough to mutter dryly, “Thought Irish girls didn’t get hangovers.”

In the end, Eva ate a single piece of toast, drank a little bit of apple juice, and then took the mug of honey tea over to the armchair in the living room while wrapped up in the fleece blanket. She sat sideways with her legs hanging over the left armrest, leaned her head against the backrest, and closed her eyes. Belle and Lily both settled down and took seats at the dining table. Lily kept shooting glances at me, eyes wide with wonder, and I didn’t need to be a mind-reader to be able to tell she was thinking about all the “stuff” we’d been doing last night together. But she kept a lid on her enthusiasm in light of what was going on and didn’t disturb us. And that left me free to focus on putting Eva at ease.
I must’ve put her a little too much at ease though, because after another ten minutes of neck and shoulder massaging she seemed to go limp in front of me. She was still bent over the balled-up blanket, her chin mashed into the fleece fabric. But all tension had gone out of her body and after leaning forward to listen to her steady breathing, I realized she’d fallen asleep.
I didn’t want to wake her, of course, but I was also trapped on the armchair with no easy way to get out without jostling her. But I didn’t really WANT to leave her anyways. I felt proud of myself for being able to do something to make her feel better despite the wicked hangover.
So instead of trying to extricate myself, I let her remain exactly as she was for another few minutes: sleeping peacefully. But as her slumber deepened, all strength left her body and her head started lolling over to the side. She startled just a bit at the feel of falling but remained asleep, the way I’d often seen one of the girls do when nodding off in the minivan during a long drive. After bunching up the fleece blanket and then tossing it over onto the nearest couch, she planted her hands atop the armrests to help push herself into a standing position. Then, she stretched out her arms and let out a long yawn before turning back to face me and nodding slowly.
“Better,” she finally answered before rubbing the center of her forehead with her middle finger and sighing. “Still feels like I never want to touch another drop of alcohol for the rest of my life, but better.”
“I’m glad, although I’d recommend never challenging Neevie to a drinking contest ever again for the rest of your life,” I told her with a smirk before taking a deep breath, planting my hands on the armrests, and pushing myself up to a standing position as well. “Is there anything else I can do for you?”
Eva’s eyes narrowed as she asked rather venomously, “Are you expecting me to do something for you in return?”
I blinked and took a step back with such a look of shock and surprise that Eva immediately winced and covered her face with both hands.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” she apologized. “I didn’t mean… That wasn’t directed at… I… You’re not… Ugh…”
She switched from covering her face to holding her head with both hands and then turned to walk away. She didn’t get very far though, perhaps still feeling weak and wiped out. In the end she merely circled the coffee table to the couch on the other side and then dropped heavily onto it sideways, with one foot still on the floor and the other foot tucked beneath her butt. She planted an elbow atop the backrest and then let the side of her head fall heavily onto her palm.
“I’m sorry,” she apologized again. “That anger wasn’t meant for you.”
“It’s alright. I didn’t take it personally,” I said before exhaling and sitting back down on the armchair. “There’s some history there, I’m sure.”
“Some,” she scoffed, keeping her gaze pointed away.
“Would you like to tell me about it?”
Eva pursed her lips and put on a familiar look: it was the silently dismissive expression implying that bringing herself to verbally reply wasn’t worth her time or effort.
But I realized in that moment that I didn’t want her to shut me out. My modus operandi with the girls had always been to let them set their own pace, never push their boundaries, or otherwise pressure them into doing anything they didn’t actively want to do themselves. Yet I knew that if I passively accepted Eva’s unwillingness to open up to me, she never would. I’d promised she’d never have to worry about me taking advantage of her, and I fully intended to uphold that promise, but I’d never said I wouldn’t try and get her to at least talk to me, so with that in mind I took a deep breath and then switched gears.
“I’d like you to tell me about it, please,” I stated in a gentle tone that nevertheless was more of a statement than a question. “I want to help you, but I can’t do that if I don’t understand what’s going on.”
Eva’s eyes narrowed as she turned to glare at me. “I don’t understand why you WANT to help me.”
I shrugged. “We’re becoming friends, aren’t we? Friends help each other out.”
“To what end? You’re just biding your time, playing the ‘nice guy’ card while giving me backrubs and buttering me up until I eventually get to the point where I feel like I owe it to you to drop my panties.”
The venom in her voice was back, and I swallowed the bile that had crept up my throat. “Is that what you really think of me? Or is that what some other guy from your past did to you and you’re scared of me turning out like him?”
Eva pursed her lips and looked away again. Her chin slid over into the base of her palm and she shook her head slowly side-to-side. She didn’t respond right away while I patiently waited her out. And eventually she turned to look back at me with a weary scowl on her face.
“I don’t totally know what to think of you, alright?” she muttered wearily. “I’m still tired, and I’ve got a splitting headache, and I’m not in the mood to spend energy I don’t have trying to figure you out right now, alright?”
“Alright,” I said while holding my hands up in surrender. “If you don’t want to have this conversation right now, we don’t have to. The morning after a night of drinking will never be the best time for philosophical discussion. You’re perfectly welcome to stick around here for as long as you like or go back home.”
“And then what? I don’t have any other friends and have nowhere else to go. Eventually I’ll have to come back here, at a time when you and I aren’t alone. You and the other girls will continue to be super-nice to me - nicer than I deserve, if I’m being honest - and I’m just gonna feel more and more pressured into falling in line like the rest and joining your personal harem.”
I frowned. “There’s no pressure to ‘fall in line’. Haven’t we all made clear that there’s no requirement for you to--”
“Yeah-yeah-yeah,” Eva cut me off while shaking her head. “It’s a perfect line, by the way: the whole bit about nobody having to do anything they’re not a hundred percent comfortable with. As a group, you all know how to put a potential target at ease and convince her there’s no peer pressure to do anything. Meanwhile Belle spends all her time selling me and Lily on the joys of having your big dick filling her up and making a girl see God for the first time.”
“I need to get that girl to dial it back a bit,” I sighed.
“It’s not just her. Neevie chants ‘one of us’ as if recruiting more girls into The BTC is her life’s mission. And Sam is just so charismatic and confident while being sexy and smart I can’t help but idolize her and want to follow her anywhere. The BTC is a fucking cult is what it is, and I can’t believe I’ve been getting sucked into it as badly as I have.”

“No you don’t,” she retorted.

I sighed. “There’s a kernel of truth in there, I’ll admit. You weren’t the friendliest person to be around at first, and it took us a little while to figure out your vibe. You’re defensive by nature, and I’m still trying to figure out why. I can only assume that someone - if not multiple someones - have hurt you in the past, and that makes me extra-careful to ensure that I don’t hurt you in the present. I can’t fully understand what you won’t tell me, but I still want to find out.”
“But why? Why waste your time and effort on me?” Eva grimaced and rubbed her temples again. “I can only assume it’s because you still think you can eventually get into my panties.”
“I can honestly say that getting into your panties is NOT on my priority list,” I stated flatly. But when Eva instantly frowned, looking insulted, I winced and quickly added, “Not that you aren’t hot enough to inspire such carnal lust. But seriously: I like you for you. You’re intriguing. You’re clearly intelligent. You’re mostly considerate about not bothering other people save for that sardonic wit that turned out to be pretty funny once we got used to your sense of humor. And as you already pointed out: you don’t seem to have other friends or have anywhere else to go.”
She arched an eyebrow. “So I’m a charity project?”
“I see a girl who’s a bit of a lost soul and has trouble trusting other people, but who’s at least starting to trust this special group of girls that I live with, and I want to help her out if I can, yes.”
“A pity project then,” Eva stated sourly.
“Just a project,” I assured her with as much kindness as I could. “Only because you don’t always make it easy. But if this house can be a sanctuary for you, then I’m happy to absorb a bit of your acerbic mood. And I’m really NOT doing it trying to get an angle into your panties and I really wish you’d believe me about that.”

“Bullshit.”
I sighed and waggled my head a bit. “In all fairness, we did do… ‘stuff’. But I swear: I didn’t fuck Lily last night.”
Eva narrowed her eyes, still looking skeptical. “I wanna believe you.”
“It’s the truth.”
Eva waved her hand dismissively. “Doesn’t matter. You’re still gonna fuck her eventually.”
I sighed and flipped my hands palms-up. “Maybe. I admit that my relationship with Lily is heading in that direction.”

“Aha!” Eva suddenly sat up straight and pointed a finger of condemnation at me, but she sat up way too fast and immediately had to wince and shut both eyes at the same time while squeezing her head. It reminded me that despite her present fire, she was still battling a wicked hangover that had to be making her more irritable than ever. But the pain must have subsided after a few moments before she squinted and aimed her finger at me again, this time growling, “You’re just proving my point: the ugly truth comes out and now you’re ready to discard me.”
I groaned and rolled my eyes. “I’m not discarding you. I’m trying to understand you.”
“So you can eventually sleep with me.” She scowled again. “Maybe you really are a nice guy, Matty. Maybe you even started being a nice guy purely out of the sincerely altruistic nature of your heart. But nobody is a complete altruist. Everybody has to get something back for themselves. Your pattern of behavior ultimately landed you not just one, but seven hot babes. It was a great situation for you in high school. So it’s no wonder that you’re continuing the same pattern of behavior that got every girl in the OG BTC to put out for you eventually. I’m just telling you it’s not gonna happen with me.”

I’m doing it for the look in my girlfriend’s eyes when I’ve done something that makes her happy. I’m doing it for the smile on a friend’s face. And I do it for a girl’s sigh of relief when she realizes she doesn’t have to cross a line with me she’s not comfortable with… the same sigh of relief I saw on your face just this morning when you thanked me for not taking advantage of you and then left to go clean your contacts and take a shower.”
Eva narrowed her eyes but didn’t immediately respond.
“Holly and the girls told you all those stories Friday night about the things they did with me to push their boundaries well before any of us actually started having sex. Holly even told you about trying to relieve me of my virginity only to have me turn her down out of fidelity to a group of girls who quite literally made a rule about NOT having sex with me. And like you said: it’s not like I’m staring down a lifetime of celibacy when I’ve already got three girlfriends plus Lily hankering for my dick.”
Eva’s eyes narrowed. “Sounds like you’re asking ME to stare down a lifetime of celibacy.”
I spread my hands out, palms-up. “You’re perfectly welcome to find a boyfriend to take care of your needs - I won’t be jealous.”
She looked skeptical. “No more ‘Tzeitel’ rescues?”
“Not unless you ask for one.” I gave her an honest look and said sincerely, “I’m really just in this for your friendship, and I don’t want you to ever feel obligated to ‘fall in line’ or put out for me from a sense of trying to balance accounts. So like I said: let’s take that possibility off the table so you and I can move forward knowing it’s just as friends.”
Eva pursed her lips and exhaled rather forcefully through both nostrils like an angry bull. She shook her head and looked more frustrated than anything else, and she seemed genuinely torn about what to do. But after two seconds of thought, she nodded firmly and stuck out her hand across the coffee table. “Fine. You and me? We’re NEVER having sex.”
I nodded in agreement and stuck my hand out across the table, taking her hand and giving it a single firm shake. “Never. We’re just friends who don’t need that extra complication in our lives.”
“Agreed.”
