But then suddenly that cool glassy surface and sharp edges were gone. My heart leaped into my throat and panic seized me as suddenly as when Merethe would open my bedroom door while I was masturbating to internet porn. Worse even, if you can believe it.
Because the blue crystal key was gone. I’d lost it.
Or had I?
I turned to look while opening my empty hand, furrowing my brow in confusion at the sight of a strange blue mist emanating from where the crystal used to be. The blue mist formed a small cloud a few inches above my palm for a moment, and the room suddenly fell silent.
Jade and Rae had been tussling only seconds before, screaming and punching and throwing things. But they completely stopped, and when I looked over at them, both girls stood just two feet away from each other, their conflict completely ignored while they both stared slack-jawed at me.
Then the cloud of blue mist zoomed away from my palm, and I belatedly tried to reach out and grab it, to no avail. The blue mist swirled around the room at hyperspeed, causing all three of us to jerk our heads around trying to keep up with it, and Jade even tried to snatch it out of the air as well, without success.
Finally, the cloud came to a halt just above my right shoulder, both arriving and then stopping so suddenly that I flinched in surprise. And then the cloud evaporated into nothingness, leaving behind something I never would have expected.
“Two thousand years will give you such a crick in the neck!” a small voice exclaimed.
A small voice belonging to a tiny blue gecko.
A tiny, talking blue gecko, standing upright on my shoulder and smiling as if it were the GEICO gecko.
Only… blue.
“Wassup, homeboy,” it greeted me, holding up a fist. “How’s it hangin’?”
Jade promptly fainted.
