I'm not the strongest or fastest out there. But if there is one thing I can often have confidence in, it is my endurance.
Said endurance simply was not there today.

“Really? That’s what, three nights in a row?”
[And he spent his day off walking animals from the shelter.]
Takaheshi scowled. “That’s a very sudden and significant change to his usual routine.”
[His routine used to be staying in his room and doing nothing so. Big improvement there.] Chikashi said. [Sure, now we have to deal with the occasional stalker but, eh, worthwhile trade-off. The kid should enjoy his youth.]
[Nothing says youth like volunteering at a soup kitchen?]
[Exactly.]
“It’s weird.” Takaheshi muttered, and wrote a report on the Children, paying special attention to the Sixth’s change in attitude and priorities. Then spoke into the communicator. “Continue surveillance.”
Takaheshi later placed his report in a plastic cylinder and dropped it at the usual dead drop hidden behind the apple-flavored drink dispenser, ensuring that his mysterious untraceable tax-free bonus would continue to reach him, and thought no more of it.

Kazue Emiko bought an apple-flavored drink, she had grown rather fond of it over the months, at first she had thought that Pilot 01’s demand for the drink was just him being childish, but now she was glad of it.

Mr. Shinji had a lot of things working against him while he tried to save the world. Emiko was just an archivist, she couldn’t save the world like he could.
But to quote the man himself. ‘The Spirit of Humanity is Indomitable; all is possible so long as you give me your support.’
So long as Emiko and those like her did their part, Mr. Shinji would make sure it all worked out!
She dropped off her pilfered prize at the usual spot, at the fake plant in the crossroad hallway that led to cryogenics and skipped down the other hallway on her way to the archives.

It had been surprisingly difficult to ingratiate himself to the cult enough to be trusted to be a mule, but ultimately worthwhile.
The cult had members on just about every level of NERV staff, not only that, but they had started branching out into the general public.
Hidehiko could sympathize with them, he really could. The Angels trying to cause Third Impact were terrifying. But he knew better than to put his hopes on the messianic delusions of one ornery Pilot.
Yes, he had proven to be effective at killing the Angels. But Hidehiko had been shown the goals of the Human Instrumentality Project. He fought not for the survival of Mankind, but to usher forth the next step of Human Evolution.
Once the Human Instrumentality Committee was done, they would all become as Gods.
A cult that worshipped the status quo could not be allowed to sabotage so lofty a goal.
He dropped a doctored report at the designated drop point for the cult and took the plastic cylinder to the true dead drop. He then went on to fulfill the night shift at accounting. Secure in the knowledge that he had done what was needful to see Humanity reach the next step in its evolution.

Daishi Eisen watched as Akitake walked away.
He was ashamed that Akitake had managed to fool him completely. Were it not for Aika Kaede’s insight, Akitake’s infiltration would have gone completely unremarked.
He quickly took the plastic cylinder that Akitake had dropped off and walked swiftly away.
By their count, not counting themselves, there were at least two factions keeping a close eye on Mr. Shinji and the Pilots, perhaps three. As far as people smarter than Eisen could determine, two of the possible three factions had designs on the Pilots that were not benevolent.
Taking into consideration that the only things that stood between humanity and the Third Impact were the Pilots, that meant that it was his solemn duty to make certain that whatever nefarious plot was trying to affect them was thwarted.
The Club kept track of several informants throughout NERV, as well as the ones who had infiltrated the Club.
Eisen had been all for teaching them a lesson, but more intelligent minds than him had seen fit to instead use them, intercepting whatever reports they were trying to send out, as well as falsifying as many reports as possible. The less accurate information whoever controlled them had, the better.
Or so Eisen had been told, truth be told, he wasn’t exactly the smartest. He was a security officer, not an egghead or one of the many nerds at NERV.
Then again, those nerds made the giant robots that were killing the monsters trying to end the world, far more useful than a meathead like him that was only good with a truncheon and a gun.
He kept the cylinder with him, leaving NERV with it in his pocket after his shift ended.
It stayed in his pocket while he had a few drinks at his favorite bar. He thought nothing of it when a man who was far too drunk for his own good bumped into him, apologizing profusely and staggering on his way.

Atsuya Gakuto continued to pretend to stagger on his way. He somewhat resented having had to upend a can of Boa on his head to better sell the image of a blind drunk staggering around, but needs must for the mission.
The UN did not have nearly enough assets inside NERV to maintain a clear picture of the many things going on in there. They were dependent on scraps of information that could be retrieved from the few assets they’d been able to isolate outside the organization’s premises.
Some in the UN, himself included, could feel in their bones that something about the organization did not add up. But they were largely powerless to pin down the details of how exactly to dig into the organization and bring their excesses to light.
The fact that they had so far been the only thing that could stop an Angel had not made things any easier.
NERV was necessary, of that there was no doubt.
But, maybe, just maybe, if they could intercept enough of these clandestine reports, their analysts would be able to paint enough of a picture of what was going on to safeguard the future.
The only warning he received was the slight crunch of tires on asphalt.

The small cylinder with the hastily written report changed hands sixteen more times.
The squabble to retain mastery of the small plastic cylinder resulted in the spilling of eighteen and a half liters of blood, the rupturing of six internal organs, the expenditure of twelve hollow point bullets, and the ruining of three vehicles.
Somewhere, the twelve most powerful men in the world spoke in absolute certainty of their privacy. One among them, Monolith 07, received the contents of that small plastic cylinder, as well as the contents of three fakes that had been set to masquerade as the genuine article.
[Every day we receive more counterfeits and misinformation.]
[Our moles in NERV whose reports can be trusted dwindle by the day.]
[Has there been any progress in rooting out The Organization?]
[None, we had reason to believe that the cult forming around Pilot 01 was it, but they do not have the capability to modify the Positron Cannon to achieve the effect we witnessed.]

[Fortune favors the bold, gentlemen. We have coddled the Sacrifices long enough; Prepare the racks. We activate the Fifteenth in six weeks. In eight, we become Gods.]
In the truest fashion of all Compromises, nobody involved in that meeting left it happy. But they all left it approximately equally unhappily.
Such is the nature of humanity.

Assuming he succeeds, which, with me at the helm...yeah. But assuming success...I would probably do what I did with Stolen Fate and do an epilogue of sorts showing a time skip of indeterminate length and him finishing up another job. If only because my favorite parts of writing a story with action in it, is the struggle. But if SInji plays his cards right, he'll have the ability to throw the Angels out like friggin' pokemon at a problem, and essentially say. "Delete that entire continent. I don't feel like dealing with it." Hell, if he does well enough, he could gain enough power to trivialize a threat as big as Scion from Worm. So yeah, rather than a story where the only real drama would be interpersonal while he just waves a hand and deletes whatever danger there is or goes "I don't get up in the morning to deal with an apocalypse. I have Angels to do that for me." An Epilogue breezing through a job that to others might be an apocalypse would fit the tone of the story better.
