🕑 Added 2019-10-22 11:16:54 +0000 UTC어렸을 때부터 온도에 굉장히 예민한 편이다. 한여름에도 에어컨이 심하게 켜진 곳에 들어가면 목이 잠기기 시작하고 물처럼 점성 없는 콧물이 주르륵! 흘러 내리기도 한다. 그리고 요즘처럼 바람이 차가워지면 고통을 겪는 부위가 생기는데 그건 바로, 귀다.
예전에 스위스에서 온 외국인 친구가 물은 적이 있다. "한국인들은 겨울에 모자를 잘 안쓰니? 그러면 많이 추울 때 머리는 어떻게 보호해?"그 질문이 조금 놀라웠던 건 우리 나라는 모자를 쓰지 않으면 머리통이 시려울 만큼 겨울이 춥지는 않으므로, 새삼 스위스의 추위의 위력이 느껴졌기 때문이다. 또 시드니에 놀러갔을 때 대부분의 호주 사람들이 썬글라스를 쓰고 있는 것에도 놀랐었다. 우리 나라에서는 햇빛이 따가운 여름에도 휴양지에 놀러간 것이 아니라면 썬글라스를 쓰는 사람들이 많지 않기 때문이다. 기후에 따른 자연스러운 문화 차이가 굉장히 신기하게 다가왔었다.
잠깐 주제를 벗어난 이야기였는데, 어쨌든 우리 나라 사람들은 대부분 아주 추운 겨울에도 롱패딩 정도면 거뜬한 듯하다. 하지만... 나는 귀 때문에 겨울이 되면 본의 아니게 흔하지 않은 아이템을 사용하게 된다. 귀마개이다. 올해도 어김없이, 일교차가 큰 가을이 오면서 밤에 조조와 산책을 나갈 때면 귀에 통증이 느껴지기 시작한다. 이 통증은 귀의 내부에서 나타나는데, 따뜻한 집에 들어오고 나서도 한동안 통증은 지속된다. 귀마개가 없으면 추운 겨울에는 오랜 시간 외출은 불가능하다고 봐야 할 정도이다.
며칠 전, 친분이 있는 유튜버가 '돌발성 난청'을 겪고 있다는 영상을 업로드 한 것을 보았다. 놀랐다. 그의 한쪽 귀가 하루 아침에 들리지 않게 된 것이다. 아...저런 병도 있구나...! 극심한 스트레스나 피로가 누적될 때 갑자기 귀가 들리지 않는 증상이 생길 수 있고, 골든 타임(약 3일) 안에 병원을 방문해 조치를 취하지 않으면 평생 귀가 들리지 않을 수도 있는 병이라고 했다. 갑자기 생긴 증상에도 크게 좌절하지 않고 긍정적인 태도로 받아들이는 친구의 태도가 인상적이었다. 그대로 귀가 먹을 수 있는 확률이 무려 30%라고 했지만... 부디 그의 귀가 빠른 시일 내에 정상으로 돌아오기를 바랐다.
올해부터는 단지 거슬리는 귀의 통증을 없애기 위해서라기 보다는, 귀를 안과 밖으로 '보호'하며 소중하게 다룬다는 마음으로 귀마개를 착용해야겠다고 생각했다.

Searching 귀마개 shows some over the ear (earmuff style) protection.. I wonder which it is. Hopefully she has something a little better than those noise reduction plugs!

I didn't know ears could be that sensitive I guess it is a good idea to take care of them. Here it doesn't get very cold though, on the worst days I can just wear a normal sweater and nothing else and I'm fine

Cold wind can actually make it a lot colder than what the thermometer says. Protection of the ears is very advisable. But I'm not sure if earplugs are the best option... These only protect the inner ear, but there's 2 problems: 1. By inserting them you will also push earwax deeper into the ear, which poses the danger of it getting stuck in there, reducing or completely disabling the hearing. You'll need to go to the doctor to have an ear cleaning then (and that's usually not as pleasant as the ASMR ear cleaning videos make you believe...) 2. Your complete outer ear remains unprotected, but this actually has very thin skin and a relatively large surface. You still lose a lot of body heat by the ears, and the cold blood from the outer ears will flow back into the body, cooling down the inner ear as well (which you thought you had protected by the plug). So I think, for sensitive people better options will be either earmuffs (the ones that look like large headphones), a hat/cap that covers the ears completely or you can just put up the hood of a hoodie or a winter jacket. People might give you strange looks, but I usually care more about my wellbeing than about people's looks.

Oh man, pain in the ear is really no fun :(( I only use a lightweight woolen hat in winter when I'm doing outdoor activities like skiing or spend longer time than usual outside. It's important to protect your ears from the cold wind. But in normal day to day life in the city I neglect that and regret later if I get sick.
もう朝と夜は結構寒いですよね。でも韓国はもっと寒いのかな？ 知り合いのユーチューバーの病気が早く治るということを僕も願っております^^
