Won’t spoil anything, but some of the stories in these 8 episodes got me wishing he actually turned them into the real deal.

You’re 100% right about these being one shots from the ages of 17-26, which basically runs right up to his release of Chainsaw Man. In fact, they were all collectively rereleased as a two volume series titled “Tatsuki Fujimoto Before Chainsaw Man”. This adapt both volumes into an anime OVA. Hilariously, Fujimoto finds some of these stories embarrassing. A lot of them are quite unpolished, but it’s still a fantastic view into one of the most interesting authors in Japan right now. It also is fun to see how parts of these early stories would transform into Fire Punch, Chainsaw Man, and his later (MUCH better) one shots. A lot of the characters that appear in his later works are directly based on these early rough drafts, most famously Nayuta being a beloved character in Part 2 of Chainsaw Man. At this rate though Fujimoto is quickly about to have literally everything he’s written get an anime. All that’s left is Goodbye, Eri (arguably his masterpiece so far) and Fire Punch (his first serial manga and even crazier than Chainsaw Man). I’m pretty confident both are getting picked up eventually.

Also the anthology gives different studios each an episode, so they can go all out without completely sacrificing an animators’ sanity

I think it was because he’s done so many one-shots, and they did just have a very profitable movie adaptation…well technically two profitable movie adaptations.
