Fun fact: Jangoβs striped goatee is actually a mushroom! Before becoming a pirate, he was a wandering dancer, but business was not good and he was always going to sleep without a bath.(in Japan they usually bathe every evening.) Then a striped mushroom started sprouting from his chin. He was hungry, so he ate the cap of the mushroom, but it tasted terrible! He swallowed it nonetheless, and ever since then heβs been able to hypnotise people. All of this is according to Oda(the author of the manga) in a Q&A
