Comparing it to the real world war 1 you are correct people really did not understand how powerful airpower is. Being able to scout in secret, attack from a hard to reach place anywhere and escape, and to be able to drop people in places that they can cause devastation was completely unknown. It made a huge difference and changed basically ever rule for fighting wars. In this show mages do the same people still don't grasp the impact until 1 side starts doing things like this.
