the comment below isnt fully accurate the war was started in ep 2 when Tanya was in her trainings mission. The Entente alliance crossed the border fully armed, for them it was a military exercise... (being x's doing) and the empire attacked them for crossing the border (fully valid), they attacked thinking that the republic will do nothing about it (ep. 1 when the generals said they failed to convince the superiors that the republic will mobilize). But seeing that the empire is now fighting, the republic thought they can now take the contested territory. So it was in fact Self Defense

so that's how it is. I thought the empire didn't start the way but the republic did.

Just to be clear it was not self defense. The empire and republic basically disagree over who could use the Rhine for territory and were both fighting over it. The other nations got involved after the empire showed itself to be too strong. Both sides claim the other is at fault and really neither is solely acting good.
