Yep, airbenders are raised as vegetarians, and in another source (a book about a previous avatar) they are allowed to eat meat if that is the only food on offer in the place they are staying! (Air benders traveled the world frequently, housing themselves in local homes at villages, it was seen as a great honor to provide shelter to an air nomad!) When Iroh was talking with Aunt Wu, when he said "At my age, there's only one big surprise left..." He was talking about dying, haha, he'd rather leave that an unknown variable and not know when it was gonna happen via fortune telling!
