SpectralTime

No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a woman will store up in her ghostly heart.

Sith2go

Might have been Calebs church ordained thief.

Julius Jermaine Robinson

I’m starting to think that seraphina never really knew Caleb at all, and is just trying to use doctrine to justify her own guilt and jealousy

Cambrian

Well I hope you like where he ends up in the end. Where they all end up, heh

Juan

Got it. I find Marcus to be interesting as a character because he is very much a flawed individual in a way I don't often see in protagonists and how he ends up is a great part of that interest.

Cambrian

Heh to be clear, what I meant by the wall flower bit was that I needed an Angelina perspective chapter to remind myself that she existed and not allow her to fade into the background to the extent that she ceased so much as speaking in chapters. Though I then realized I was going to have the same problem with Erised, something I'm rectifying in another way since she doesn't have any POV chapters for the rest of the arc. Glad you're enjoying the story so much btw, I really appreciate your enthusiasm for it xD

Juan

Cambrian

Honestly? It sounds like you're putting more thought into his character than I am. I'm very much a "go with the flow" sort of writer. So I'm kind of just writing Marcus how it feels he should be written rather than spending a huge amount of time thinking about it. Same for every character in the story, basically. Would still love to see your analysis whenever you complete it, but to sort of answer your question on whether its intentional or not... Maybe? Lol, its really just what feels like the natural progression in my head.

Juan

I'm glad I waited for this chapter as it gave even more information for my little essay I'm cooking up. But now I've got to wait until Wednesday to get Elsenthia's chapter. My plan is to use each of the characters surrounding Marcus to build up to the point I have on Marcus and if I'm going to make like 8 posts I might as well be thorough. So I guess I'll just ask this for now. My general opinion on Marcus is that he is a essentially the spoiled prince archetype. As in he likes the benefits of being in the position he's in, but doesn't want to deal with the reponse abilities that come with the position. With alot of his character growth coming from him earning his position and learning to accept it while also fighting against it. Is this possible perspective on Marcus an intentional one?

Juan

Really great chapter. You've hit a nice balance of making the people we should care about complex with positives and negatives and Serafina really embodies that. Also amping up the tension and mystery of Serafina's Shadow by revealing more of her was a good touch.

Kaijucifer

Perfect. Purge the charlatans and corrupt! I would love to see Shadow take them all down and end the corruption starting with Matthews.

V01D

I wonder how long the shadow has known Serafina. The way they talk makes me think they may even have known Caleb

Joshua Kei

I support this🤗 Go serafina🥰🥰🥰Violence is the answer!

KOS 1100

The Cleaning has begun very nice.

Ben

Not sure about others but if you do describe the Shadow’s…“housekeeping efforts”… then I for one will be putting on some upbeat tunes and smile my way through reading about these treacherous parasites getting dealt with. For more nuanced situations I agree violence ought not be the solution, but after the mountain of reasons you’ve provided so far I admit I was kinda hoping Marcus himself would end up doing the barber’s work on behalf of Serafina and the Princess.

David Hedges

A lot of people might say that violence isn't the answer, but that is just modern morality and popular culture cliches speaking. From a historical perspective usually violence will actually solve the problem of political opponents, and the more brutal and thorough the better. What did a king or other leader do when he had serious political opponents that actually wanted to unseat him? They murdered the crap out of the opponent(s) and usually that was the end of it as it solidified their rule. It wasn't even all that unusual for it to be by assassins instead of armies, especially if you were a Byzantine. This violence only really backfired if their weren't able to actually kill their opponents, but their opponents usually would have killed them anyways so that point is moot. This is especially true the farther back in history you go with it becoming less and less common and brutal as you approach the Renaissance period.

Sootythunder

Also I could see this blowing up spectacularly on Serafina, if the other cardinals have spies within the orcs or whatever races make up the races of the dark lords armies, if word starts spreading that they believe Marcus is the dark lord they might argue that he is truely the dark lord and that Serafina endless protection of him is indicative of her being seduced and corrupted by him and has become a servant of the dark lord leading the church astray. Hell I could see Serafina being on the receiving end of the churches divine justice in such a scenario ESPECIALLY if the other nobles and Cardinals learn it’s her shadow killing them

Sootythunder

Fingers crossed for a dark elf

Cambrian

I can say, as a minor spoiler... the final chapter of this arc is a Shadow POV chapter~

Cambrian

I will say, minor spoiler... but the final chapter of this arc is a Shadow POV chapter :P

Cambrian

Hmmmmm~

Cambrian

Thanks!

Cambrian

Nope~

Cambrian

Glad you enjoyed it!

Cambrian

Serafina: "I do good? :D" ehehehe

DualEquinox

Either that or she has a dramatic identity reveal that is non-villainous in nature. For example. do we know for sure Marcus was an only child?

SpectralTime

I gotta wonder if the Shadow is secretly a bigger villain here than she seems. She’s gone out of her way not to meet Marcus, she’s been carefully hidden by the narrative in a way that the Queen hasn’t, and she just carefully manipulated the Pope in a moment of weakness to give her a very open ended blank check… A moment of weakness she arguably engineered by seeing it coming and letting it happen no less.

SpiritCrystal

Nice drama!

Sootythunder

Has there been a description of what the shadow looks like?

RanmaChaos

Thanks for the chapter!

Smile Dip

I think one of the potential flaws to this plan is assassinating inconveniences to the Church is how we got a not insignificant portion of this mess to begin with. Not at least measuring it out and weighing consequences instead of ordering hits in a peak of emotion could hurt her standing.

SylverIron

Also, if the shadow also falls ro Marcus' charm... double milf between Sera and her?

SylverIron

....honestly, it *is* a good plan to clean house. It was already known that someone has already tried to kill both Marcus and the Princess via diversion of paladins. Not a bad plan at all Serafina.... the motivation behind that is also good. Shows she's better than her predecessor and not *redoing* past mistakes. This can also clear the way to a better future for the capital entirely. Clean slate it is.
