Indeed, I am.

I appreciate the vote of confidence and the comparison to one of my favorite video games of all time lmao

In Re the reply in the first comment. It's a surprisingly good twist on the hero's journey. Makes it an oddly unique story. Like how in Witcher 3 you learn your story as Geralt is only ancillary to the *main* story that is Ciri's. Marcus might be *your* main character but he's not necessarily the primary mover and shaker in this tale and that's ok. No reason a hero can't be secondary to a story. And it's a great rug pull to learn how things were manipulated. So your reader thought they were following a primary actor but really he's been incidental. It's fantastic

Cambrian

Good analogy heh. Yes, my very scant notes for Book 2 already include a laundry list of the countries that surround the Holy Empire. As for what the last chapter shows, you'll just have to wait and see, hehe

Cambrian

I'll agree that he hasn't played much of a direct role in resolving the Empire's Succession Crisis, though I would argue that wasn't necessarily meant to be the main plot thread... or rather, my goal was to make Marcus and Elsenthia each have their own Main Plot threads that intertwined with one another and brought them back together in the end. So Marcus' Main Plot was a journey of self-discovery in which he finally confronted his past so he could move into the future while Elsenthia's Main Plot was confronting the past of her ancestors and the actions of her mother and 'aunt' so that she could also move into the future. I guess Elsenthia's side of things feels more like a main plot thread than Marcus' side of things because the story ultimately ends back in the Capital, with Marcus becoming King alongside Elsenthia's Queen heh. But yeah, this won't be the last time in the Epilogue Arc that Marcus thinks on the very things you talked about~

Yup, just waiting for the chaos to start. This chapter was suspiciously calm.

Do you know what this fic feels like to me now I think of it? That first book/arc of most Empire Building Fanfics/Series, where contrivance puts the protagonist who never wanted to rule on the throne and the MC has very little actual agency as he is caught up in everyone else's schemes. Of course, following that logic, there should be a sequel hook coming up in the last chapter or two showing other countries/parties choosing a course of action that will eventually force the MC's hand and give him casus belli to start going manifest destiny on the setting.

David Hedges

It does feel a little weird. The MC basically wasn't needed at all to resolve the main plot thread of the story. Everyone else just goes off and solves the problem off screen for the most part. Sure, his existance was the motivation that pushed everyone else to act, but I get the feeling that if he had just sat around and done literally nothing the whole time the plot would have solved itself in time anyway with all these people moving the chess pieces around in the background. It feels strange (and ironic) for the protagonist of the story to be one of the least important characters.
