Cambrian

Looool, ruh roh, Mikael about to wind up dealing with adventurers xD

Smile Dip

You know, this is starting to sound like the beginning of a surprisingly compelling sidequest. "Something in town is killing the rats..."

Cambrian

Heh, there's certainly some hang-ups with the plan yeah, I imagine Mikael's hope though is to threaten him to help while Avina and Thayla keep him honest. But yeah we'll have to see what actually winds up happening, won't we? Glad you're enjoying the story so far enough to write such indepth comments though <3

Vitalik

oh, sure. I misunderstood his motivation. However, I still do not understand how he is going to make Zadikus help. And how can he even trust him to get into his brain a SECOND time, and then perform a ritual unknown to him (maybe he just teleports him into a volcano, lol). But I think these are already spoilers)

Cambrian

Mikael's primary motivations at the moment are to get his memories back and to return to his world. Both of which he needs Zadicus to do. It's not about killing Zadicus, though obviously Mikael wouldn't mind seeing the man dead at this point. But only after he gets what he really wants from him. Without Zadicus, his mind stays a fractured mess. Without Zadicus, he'll never know what he needs to accomplish in order for the Hero Summoning Ritual to consider his duty to the world to be complete and offer to let him go back to Earth. Now, if Mikael didn't have Avina's plan to work off of, he might have still had to flee the city. But since Avina has provided him with a method that might get him close enough to Zadicus to get what he needs from him in a timelier manner, Mikael is going for it. Especially since he has no clue what Zadicus might do with his memories in the meantime, or if he's on some sort of time table before he can NEVER go back to his world or something. Though yes, there's also definitely some aggression from the foreign memories in his head keeping him from even considering the option of running away

Vitalik

(sorry for the length, sometimes it's hard for me to stop, hehe)Well, this section definitely answers the question I had. But I will voice him anyway. Why did Mikael decide to stay and fight? Yes, I understand that destroying the source of his problems is good, but not entirely logical. Because Zadicus is literally the legitimate ruler of the city and therefore perfectly protected. Given its expansion, I'm sure competitors have tried to kill it dozens of times. And for this, specialists were sent, not a bunch of delitants, like our heroes. In addition to protection, it is important to remember that he is a mage, and therefore he may be dangerous in himself. But even in case of successful liquidation, the problems will only begin. In the end, our heroes killed a legitimate lord, probably they will not even be given an excuse, but will immediately start hunting. Of course a clichéd document folder with all his shenanigans written on it might help... But it might not help either. If I remember correctly, he was appointed to the position of lord by the kingdom's ruling council, so among them are his patrons...or those he bribed. If the truth about Zadicus becomes public, it will be a powerful blow to them. Accordingly, it will be more convenient for the council to simply ignore the excuses and kill them all. Considering all this, it was easier for Mikael to run away from the city and the kingdom, and at least sit in the wilderness for a year (with two hot girls, by the way!). During this time he had to adapt to the new world (learn politics, geography and history) and hone his fighting skills (I'm not sure if transferring memories into the brain also creates muscle memory. but it's magical crap so anything is possible). But despite all this, he remains to fight. Is it all because of the bloodlust of the voices in the head?

Cambrian

Yeah, definitely something he's gonna be dealing with for a while xD

JRC

I find it a bit troubling how much influence the voices in Mikael's head seem to have on him. An excellent move narratively, but I seriously doubt this is the last time they'll get Mikael into a mess they can't/won't get him out of!

Cambrian

Potentially!

Cambrian

Heh, you're not far off of my plans with that second paragraph. Not quite right either, but clooooose~

Idol

I wonder, if part of the reason he can't absorb larger souls than rats before their dead is because his soul isn't comparatively larger than big guard number two. Would that change if he eventually consumed enough souls that his "storage" was large enough to dwarf an average human like he dwarfs rats now? Interesting...

Nanaya7Nights

There is another advantage of not killing these guards. Now they will report that the attacker is a man. So, Zadicus will have no reason to suspect Thayla's involvement. Not sure whether he will think that this is a third party (maybe some mercenary hired by an ambitious or disgraced noble) or if he will suspect that Avina has allied with someone. That said, it would be interesting if one of the warehouses has a strong corrupt follower of Zadicus that Mikael has to kill. That way he gets a power boost and learns that some people in this world cannot be stopped without using Lethal measures. He can then put the body in the warehouse before setting it on fire, that way there won't be any proof of how he killed the guy.

Cambrian

Thanks for reading and commenting <3

RanmaChaos

Thanks for the chapter!

Cambrian

Its more the size of the creature that the soul is attached to, because the bigger a creature is, the bigger the soul can become. So no, he's not going to accidentally suck up a hobo soul while he's sucking up rat souls. Though also I'd say he has enough control to filter his targets yeah

Sith2go

Is Mikaels ability to absorb weak souls simply tied to the strength of the species he's absobing, or the individual? Could he accidentally absorb the soul of a homeless person, who lives in the sewer, while he is out hunting for rats, if the hobo is old and frail/sick? Or does Mikael have enough control to filter out the souls of non-targets?
