“Behind you is the Emerald Forest, where you will not only prove that you belong at Beacon… you will also meet your partners for the next four years. However, do not assume this to be a cakewalk. The Emerald Forest has it’s fair share of Grimm and while there will be Professors watching your progress the entire time, they have been instructed NOT to interfere.”
Yeah, pull the other one. Cole figured, at least where he was concerned, that Glynda herself would step in if it looked like he was in mortal peril. Still, let her scare the others. It wasn’t his business.
“That is not to say you will be alone out there, however. As I mentioned previously, you will be meeting your partners for the next four years down in the forest. The first person you make eye contact with shall be your partner, without exception.”
Wait… seriously? Cole hears a whole lot of murmuring at that from those gathered around him. He has to admit, even he’s a little surprised that it’s something so arbitrary. He would have figured Glynda would have wanted to guarantee that her little spy was his partner or something. But this… this left it all up to chance, didn’t it?
“Once you have paired up, you should work together with your partner to make it to the end of the Emerald Forest. There, you will find the ruins of an abandoned temple. Within this temple there are several relics. Each pair of initiates should take one relic and bring it back here at the top of the cliff to pass your initiation.”
There’s a pause as everyone assimilates that information. Finally, Goodwitch clears her throat.
“Any questions?”
“U-Um… yeah? Ma’am?”
All eyes turn to Joan Arc, causing the blonde to squeak and shrink in on herself. But Glynda just narrows her eyes and hums.
“Yes? What is it?”
“How… do we get down to the forest, exactly?”
Seriously? Cole’s eyes flicker from Joan… down to the platform she’s standing on. The platform that’s mirrored by the platforms they’re ALL standing on. Did she not understand how this worked?
“You will be launched.”
That’s all Glynda gives, before the launching begins. Joan shrieks as she’s thrown through the air. Everyone else is a bit more… composed though a couple of them are way too cheery about it in Cole’s humble opinion. He, meanwhile, is prepared thanks to all of Glynda’s training these past couple weeks. Sure, he’s a far cry from a trained huntsman, and he’s definitely behind everyone who got years of training when they were younger.
But he’s not auraless anymore. And he’s never going to be that weak ever again.
As Cole is launched, he only has eyes on one thing… where Blake Belladonna is going. It’s obvious at this point that Goodwitch told her spy to partner up with him, because Blake is watching him as well.
Well, he has no reason to make it easy for them, now does he? Smirking a bit, Cole angles himself so that when his platform finally springs him into the Emerald Forest… it’s to the opposite side from where Blake will land. She could still try and track him down, and no doubt she’ll try to do exactly that… but Cole isn’t going to go down without a fight.
Landing on his feet in the dark forest, he immediately pulls his borrowed weapon out and extends the cane slash baton to his side. Keeping his head on a swivel, Cole moves quietly through the woods, trying his best to be sneaky. And to be fair, given his history one might think it would be simple enough in the end.
… But Cole had to admit, there was a difference between skulking through a city and skulking through a forest. A big difference. This was not his home environment, and he was more than a little on edge, despite his aura being unlocked. After all, this would be his first time encountering-
A growl from his left is all the warning Cole gets. But it’s warning enough, thank fuck. He turns and imposes The Long Memory between him and a snarling Beowulf at the last possible second, swinging the cane like a mace and smashing it into the Grimm’s snapping jaws.
The Beowulf is thrown to the side, but it has friends… friends that Cole finds himself beset by a moment later. Two of the creatures are on top of him in a moment, bringing the number he’s facing up to three. Thankfully, he has the Aura to deal with them. Unfortunately, Aura is by no means an infinite resource.
With a snarl of his own, Cole swings The Long Memory back and forth. It’s a bludgeoning weapon at the end of the day… nothing special. Not even as difficult to use as a sword or spear would be, really. He stabs the blunt end of the cane up through the underside of one of the Beowulves’ throats and then smacks the other one off of him before leaping to his feet in anticipation of the original one coming back for Round Two.
Only… the original Beowulf is already dealt with. Cole realizes this in the same moment that he makes eye contact with the young woman who killed it.

This AU version of Yang seems to have Ruby's personality combined with Yang's extroversion to some degree (at least in the surface). Blake has her terrorist background, her tendency to run off whenever the White Fang are mentioned & the fact that she is going to stick to Cole anyway as it is an assignment from Glynda so there is less romantic advantage for Cole by being her partner. Wiess is the rich girl to Cole's theif & of Cole becomes team lead then there will be additional animosity from her end at the beginning. Also, I am not sure how she will react to knowing about Cole's criminal past. So, she seems like her route will take a lot of work. And in all honesty, I just want to see the fireworks from having Blake partnered with Wiess.

I like the idea of Blake, since just because he's got Aura now, doesn't mean he's that clever or cunning. I mean, if he was that good a criminal, Junior would have unlocked his aura already. And while he has gotten one over on Glinda and Amber, he's in the unique position of having something Glinda wants and Amber is rather naive. The man needs some humbling lol.

As amusing as Weiss and Blake partnering up at first might be, I feel like it would just be the same drama over and over again but without Ruby there to smooth things along since I highly doubt Cole would actually care. Of the three options I think Yang would be the best one but I'm kinda bummed Pyrrha wasn't in the poll or hell even Joan would have been a better slot than Weiss.
