Huh, I honestly can see the point of those who voted for sealing. I suppose it probably is the better option after all.

cmacenka

Definitely not a good idea to sandbag if we’re trying to make a good impression. Best to end this quickly. Besides, the way our power works means that we can eventually get another ace up our sleeves that nobody knows about.

Tjuparulla

It's a big permanent gain of points to be gotten by taking him out solo whether or not he escapes. Taking him out before he can fully transform hides the extent of the trump card plus no one will guess it may scale to Endbringers. Flechette has already failed to deal with him once, he's keen for a rematch. So there's little to no hope that she or Taylor can 'take down Hookwolf' without outside intervention. Short of running, Hookwolf will force the issue so there isn't a realistic chance of him not revealing his hand. Waiting will only dilute the points, increase the risks and probably result in the exact same situation or worse.

Doug Bowman

@Nanaya7Nights Reasonable, but not the only possible outcome. If Hookwolf was helpless but Lung doesn't know if he's going to be put away or just slapped on the wrist, it may be worth the risk to eliminate him. Especially if he thinks he can hit and run. If we knew how the seal worked, I could answer that, but if it looks like glowing chains that fully immobilize him and he's obviously trying and failing to activate his ability, that would look like an opportunity. If it was more of an AOE rune burning into the pavement with glowing boundaries, not so much.

Nanaya7Nights

@Doug: If Lung has someone like Oni Lee scouting out the situation, then why would he attack if he sees the trio take down Hookwolf? The Empire temporarily losing one of their heaviest hitters is a good thing. On top of it, attacking the trio when the BB Protectorate is on the way would be a tactically stupid choice. He would have been informed that a new previously unknown cape just restrained Hookwolf with what looks like a Blaster/Shaker power or a Tinker tech device (if they think the staff did it). Why would he want to test his powers against a restraint ability when he knows there are more people on the way who will definitely team up with the New Cape and get in his way. If he has two braincells to rub together, he should choose to wait till he knows that the Indie cape is patrolling WITHOUT PRT support to kill/capture him.

Gamertecno

I went with Sealing him. 1. Taking him down solo should give more points than with a group and there may be a bonus for this being the first cape fight and winning it! 2. He can make it look like he can only seal one thing at a time and act worn out by the time backup arrives. 3. This lets him test how good the sealing actually is when the stakes are probably as low as they are ever going to be since he can teleport them out if things go sideways. 4. He can recharge the staff without much issue, and getting a larger amount of points now will help me with avoiding pulling another really good power and having to give up on one.

Doug Bowman

He's still in enemy territory, and Lung or other known threats are still possibly relevant. A fight you may win against the possibility of something you will need to run from. As you said, the exact effect of seal is unknown, so even considering the ruckus possibly drawing Lung, the seal may do as much or more. The same reason he wouldn't seal the mooks is why he wouldn't seal Hookwolf; reserving the biggest gun for an otherwise unbeatable foe. And the bugs are a greater escalation than the seal, that was my point. Escalation isn't about the resources, it's about the threat of danger/damage. Bugs freak people out and the obvious nature of the attack warrants hostility and panic. Seal, depending on the visuals, would provoke more shock and confusion as people stopped moving. The opposite analogy would be more appropriate; bugs being the cheap gun and seal the expensive taser.

Loki's Brand

What's the point of having the power if you don't use it when a heavy hitter shows up? It's not like he's going to run out of tricks up his sleeve, given the nature of his power, so there's really not much point in sandbagging so hard as if he's a normal cape.

Sith2go

Showing that he has the ability to effortlessly seal and capture superpowered individuals at the start of his career. Will inevitably give more credence to his claims of being able to seal and contain the Endbringers when they get that far. So while it reveals one of his tricks early, i see it as an investment for his future reputation. It probably wouldnt hurt either to be known for arresting supes non-lethally.

Xi

Couldn’t he just drain Hookwolf with his staff?

RHar

Before I even read, is the AN supposed to be read to the tune of "Ridin' Dirty"?

RanmaChaos

I chose to seal. I still haven't read Worn, so No clue how this will effect things. Still, Jason and Taylor should probably skedaddle after he does the thing. No reason to let Anyone know Anything.

UncrownedKing

The difference between the mooks and Hookwolf should be rather obvious. Like, I get what you're going for and I'll respond in kind but that's not exactly the sound argument you might have intended. You basically just asked why use a tazer when a gun works just as well. When you have a reliable way to take them down without escalating, then you should use it. Sealing in this situation is escalating in a way that Taylor's base ability isn't because it's still a limited resource pool. It's pretty much the difference between a base attack and a special attack. However in the future, when the mana cost is a non-issue, it should also be considered in the same light because it is a reliable way of de-escalating. At the moment though, the mooks did not require it because there were other methods just as capable of taking them down with little collateral damage or risk of life. With Hookwolf, to my knowledge, Jason does not have another reliable way to take him down without making it a fight, risking collateral damage, and/or the lives of potential bystanders or his team. Perhaps Taylor webbing the guns could have failed, but on that note, the sealing could also fail. It's still pretty much an untested ability.

Talia Rock

Fuck it, flex on these bitches!

Name now could get an in with many….target😏

@UncrownedKing saving it for Lung or the other guy he mentioned he was looking out for in a previous chapter isn't overly cautious. They're expected to be somewhere in the vicinity and he said himself that it's better this guy than Lung. You're also underestimating him massively. He has Scarborough Fair and three branches of magic. You think blood, death, and demon magic don't have combat applications? Teleportation is also a very powerful weapon in and of itself, paired with ranged combatants it's a nightmare. I don't remember it being limited to allies, though it's been a minute so I could be wrong. A gate below and above would be plenty to lock down anyone who can't fly. The "problem" also goes both ways. If saving energy is pointless, he should have sealed the mooks. Why not? He didn't know there was going to be a heavier hitter coming until after. Why take the chance of escalating with the bugs? Her anti-gun measures could have failed and let one of them fire randomly at bugs and hitting some cowering civilian. He probably has enough energy to lock down all the mooks, if not he definitely had enough to get one side, so why not open with his biggest gun?

This post is grounded in the thought that getting Hookwolfl taken to prison is the main reason to interfere here. That is wrong, or at least debatable. Like already said in other comments, first: sealing someone isn't a trump card, it scaling is the real reason it is OP. And he is also operating in an achivement based system. The question know is if welbelievelhe gets more Points by taking the Villain down alone, or if he alsl gets points for doing it in a team.

UncrownedKing

To be completely honest, I don't remember what most of the powers do after I finish a chapter.

UncrownedKing

May not be a game but the situation is the same though. You can always say that something else stronger might appear later or you might need it next time. We could use it now and Lung could attack. We can save it for Lung only for an Endbringer to show up out of the blue. We could save it for an Endbringer only for Scion to go on the attack early. It's a never ending cycle. I think just think it's a bad mentality to start our hero career with. Holding back until someone potentially gets hurt. Between Jason, Taylor and Lily, all 3 are pretty much backline fighters. Bugs aren't going to do much of anything to Hookwolf. Lily can hurt him but she doesn't really have anything to keep him down without killing him. Jason is pretty much limited to teleporting them around at the moment to keep them safe and out of his range. That's all well and good until Hookwolf decides to draw them out somehow. Maybe by going after the trapped gang members or just wrecking up the place. Without a solid way to put him down we're just giving the situation time to escalate uncontrollably.

Just_Call_Me_Steve

Interesting that the name of the ability comes from the Scottish play but the description refers to stuff from I think Warhammer Fantasy.

Nanaya7Nights

Doesn't the power that Jason last bought keep him off the radar of precognitives unless they specifically look at him? Also, as you mentioned his current banked power alone will completely change his power set once he buys it making all his current threat ratings obsolete.

Nanaya7Nights

He should take down Hookwolf right now!!! For the following reasons: - If he is rewarded for heroic feats, singlehandedly neutralising a major villain cape should be worth more than just being a part of the team that defeats him or drives him off - His sealing ability itself isn't his Trump card, it is the fact that the ability scales infinitely with the Mana he pours into it. So, if he makes it look like sealing Hookwolf took a lot of energy, then the PRT & the villains will assume that he has a blaster power that allows him to bind people. It is a BIG leap of logic to go from "The new cape can bind/restrain capes" to "The new cape can bind masses of people, capes like Lung, Eidolon, Alexandria and even the Endbringers." - And more points and reputation will put him on a faster path to getting a much bigger trump card: Chaos Magic. Actual REALITY WARPING broken magic!!!

Firang

Recommending letting Flechette take the lead position here. Even we seal Hookwolf, it would only bring about a prison escape by the rest of the E88 later. We could take him down now, and expose a Trump card, but it would be a small and temporary gain. Just hold him off for now, let him think he has our measure, so we can give a more decisive strike later.

Vacivus

Is there something stopping him from using it if things look too dangerous during the fight?

Man of Sodium

But this isn't someone playing a game, he has no respawns yet.

SylverIron

....isn't a trump card exactly for this reason? Why take the risk when it can end right this moment?

UncrownedKing

Yeah, but if this doesn't count as big and unexpected, what will? It's kind of like the item dilemma in games. Always saving something until you might really need it, only to get to the final boss and realize you never used it. Not like he can't just drain more demons after the patrol to refill it

Doug Bowman

Being so reliant on your biggest gun from the getgo is a bad idea. Also, saving up the energy from the staff should always be the play if at all possible. You never know when something big and unexpected will show up.

Erinnyes

That is a tough call. I'm almost more worried about spending the mana in the staff and then not having it available later.

UncrownedKing

It's funny, it's like he's trying to think of the long term while only coming up with short term problems. Aside from the fact that this will absolutely get him some good points, he'll also be getting far better powers in the near future. He doesn't even need to completely explain how strong his sealing is. Better yet, using it only against Hookwolf when he didn't against the group fight would make it seem far more limited than it actually is, lowering is potential threat rating to the PRT and E88. Don't know how Lung would respond, though he's arrogant enough that he'd probably assume he could break out of it and if not Lee with his clones could get him out. It's eventually going to come out that he can use it, might as well not seem like we're going easy on the villains. Guess he might not want simmy to know he can do it, but with precog bs it's hard to say she doesn't already know. And if she doesn't she probably won't learn from this either.
