Going for as Traditional of a Look as Possible
🕑 Added 2025-05-19 16:22:30 +0000 UTCAs I get close to finishing the animation for the J.J. plush ad, I've been adding a couple of effects and post filters to give it the look of hand-painted cels:
Subtle paintbrush strokes on the color fills that are unique with each new frame...

A bit of shadow behind each cel, as if it were 1-2 mm above a painted backdrop...

Slightly aged/browned pencil strokes with a rough texture when seen up close...

..and plenty of the other usual stuff like soft blur, washed colors, dirt/hairs, gate weave, and film grain.
Thanks for being patient while we dial in these new ideas. I want episode 3 to have as close to a traditional look as possible, and this little side animation has been a great experiment for figuring it all out.

Its the little details like this that culminate into something incredible. It’s amazing that I keep learning about new little details that I only would have noticed subconsciously as a watcher, ones that take much conscious deliberation from a creator. Beyond just seeing the final product, learning about and even witnessing the process of your animation makes the experience that much more valuable.
