This is the moment when Vard really decides to become a guardian. Up until now he's kind of been forced into it all, but this was his decision.
You might also notice Ilmaris did not have time to become a dark elf ;D

He did not have the shield in the flashback, and yes he got it to protect himself and others ;) That's actually how I got his name Vard => "ward". Ilmaris is definitely a go-getter :'D But yea Ina is not his biggest fan now
.......... I am now wondering, and it may just be because you don't REALLY see his arm all that well. But, did he go with the Shield because after the scarring, he wanted to protect himself better? It's kind of an out there idea and I THINK i saw the shield in the first flashback page but I can't really tell. Ether way, it kind of sucks Ilmaris hasn't become a Dark Elf. It means now I will have to feel a LITTLE bad for Mirien when her Son(??) dies. Because I DO NOT suspect Inara is going to let him live after that. BUT! You got to give the boy some credit. He went for the biggest threat.
