Unknowns Info Sheet - text sneak peek
🕑 Added 2020-03-05 18:17:11 +0000 UTCI'm doing one of those info sheets for Unknowns like I did for mages and elves. There's quite a lot of info and lore here. Before I draw it up, here's the text for you beforehand!
Modern Unknowns are largely human, not only in appearance but also in strength and life expectancy.
Appearance
Slit pupils – akin to snakes.
Fangs and claws – can be "magically" extended from "human size" to their monster versions.
They used to look more monstrous but generations of mixing with humans and the like has made them look more human. The child of an Unknown and a human will be Unknown.
Strength
Their physical bodies alone have similar strength capabilities as humans do, but it's possible for them to augment their strength with magic, sometimes making the augmentation permanent with sigil tattoos. Some warriors like to boast with their untattooed bodies.
Magic
Unknown are natural mages. The source of their power is within them – their hearts, which are basically portals to the Void. It makes mastering new powers easier for them than for many other species. All they have to do is learn to fall deeper within themselves/the void and find the appropriate strength and power from within. They have no need for outer sources of power, but often use tools to direct and specialize their magic.
The wires - a tool given to Unknown children when they start training to learn to affect and adapt a versatile object. Many later incorporate them to fighting and other magical purposes.
Wings
Stronger Unknown have permanent scars on their backs. These are caused by an event called a Breakthrough, where an Unknown suddenly manages to tap into more power than their physical body can handle. If they're able to get the surge of new power under control, it breaks through and manifests as wings. If they can't control it, they die. The wings are essentially tears into the Void.
If an Unknown's heart is harmed, their power is lost forever and can't be obtained.
Society
Unknown are usually either warriors or scribes. Warriors are trained to fight and become mage berserkers. They're distinguished from other Unknown by shaving a part of their hair.
Unknown live scattered among the lands, either secluded from others or hidden among the general population. Few know about Unknown, so they can sometimes live openly in small towns and villages with other creatures. Unknown don't really have a governed society of their own.
Still some Unknown hold specific titles:
Champion – the strongest of the Unknown warriors. Chosen by either defeating the previous Champion in combat or by otherwise proving in front of other Unknowns to be the strongest of them all. Can be summoned by other Unknowns to help.
Head guardian – partner to the Champion, chosen by the Champion. Their job is to be by the Champion's side and help them in their job. Some feel the Head Guardian should protect the Champion's life by all costs, while others feel sacrificing their guardian goes against the Champion's entire purpose.
Elders – a council of older and most accomplished Unknown scribes. Their job is to research magic and acquire more knowledge, keeping the Unknown on the very cutting edge of magic. Each elder has an assortment of scribe apprentices.
High shaman – usually one of the elders. Spiritual leader to all Unknowns. Has no actual authority, but is still often confided in for wisdom and guidance. Also acts as a doctor, and is present at births, funerals, and other ceremonies.
Guardians - to protect themselves from hunters, Unknown collect and assemble a network of guardians with whom they have a magical bond, so they can call any of them to help. Guardians can be non-Unknowns too. The Champion acts as guardian to all Unknowns.
