With regards to the giant straw hat theory implying that the previous User just make it bigger during transformation. There is a good chance it is true as some devil fruit effects should persist after the previous user died in the One Piece World. 1. Gecko Moria mentioned that the shadows he took from Thriller Bark will not return to the owner even if he dies, the only way they return is if he command them to. But he is known for deception and trickery in that arc so maybe it's a lie to keep himself alive? 2. Boa Hancock mention to Blackbeard that after he steal her Devil Fruit by killing her allegedly, he won't be able to turn his stoned subordinates back. That means that even if she died, people that she turn to stone will still be stoned and perhaps even the new user will not be able to undo it.
