The writers always portray the supernatural ambiguously, you can either take it as it actually were 'Harbard' the god, or that it's a person who's most likely a sociopathic-killer' that manipulates the people around him, there's a reason why he shows up when all the men are gone, and kids dying in pair of two's mysteriously, you can either see it as him being amazing at telling stories, or that he's actually a master manipulator. The show always offer a different perspective when dealing with the supernatural.

I think the actress playing Siggy had to leave the show, so they had to kill her off prematurely.
What pissed me in this episode is the fact that they mention Russia although Russia was probably not discovered yet et not named like this.
