I think that this may be an important distinction - because if this is a pure SI then the deception Mark is pulling is pretty rough. Nolan can't accept someone who isn't his son. I'm hoping this is a hyberdized type of situation; that the SI merged minds and memories with Mark Grayson. I personally think that's the most comfortable scenario.
