Carter:
“Wait, is that Carter? Carter Miller?”
A man in a well-fitted suit walked towards me, and he seemed far too familiar. I was supposed to be meeting a client this afternoon to sign papers for a sale, but I didn’t think we already knew each other. It wasn’t until he got close enough to reach out a hand for a domineering handshake that I realized who this was.
“Ryan Parker!”
He seemed proud to hear his name said aloud, but my voice’s volume was based in surprise, not admiration. Ryan and I had been classmates when completing our MBAs years ago, and I recall him already desperately clinging to his glory days even though he’d earned his bachelor’s less than two years prior.
“Wow, you must be here for the partnership meeting? I never pegged you as a man to settle for being an assistant, but hey, we all have to earn a paycheck.”
Wait, did this guy seriously think that I was the personal assistant to the man he was meeting? Fuck him. I could feel myself getting heated under my collar, and I took a moment to compose myself before replying.
“Well Ryan, I’m actually the person that you’ll be working with today. We have equivalent positions at our respective companies.”
“No shit, well good for you man!”
He took the correction in stride, slapping me on the back as he led me down the hallway of my own office.
“So, which conference room are we in today?”
Wait.
“Actually, let’s head to my office first- my boss just sent a set of revisions that we can review there.”
He was still smiling that goofy smile as I stepped in front now. He probably thought I just wanted to show off my office, and I can’t pretend that that wasn’t a factor. I had a corner view of the water, and I’d earned every inch of that view.
But no, I wasn’t the one that would be showing something off soon- that would be Ryan.

Ryan:
Following Carter into his office, I was a bit stunned that he already had a corner office, but maybe his building just had more corners than mine. My company was deeper into the heart of downtown, so that could make sense. His desk was covered in files, and I wondered why his secretary didn’t handle all of that paperwork for him. Fuck, maybe he didn’t have a secretary?
“Okay, here we go- let’s talk details.”
He talked details- I looked out onto the view that I now wanted. I wondered if this company needed two VPs over Sales.
“So, I know it’s a bit unorthodox, but that’s what he’s looking for.”
“Unorthodox?”
“Yes, our CEO started this company from the ground up decades ago, and he believes in the power of helping others. Giving them the shirt off your own back if needed.”
“Wait, are you serious?”
“No, of course not.” I laughed with him before his next statement cut me off. “He did like your suit earlier when you met him though, so he’d love to know where you got it.”
Fuck, I’d already met Tom? I’d shot the shit with a guy in the elevator, but that couldn’t have been him, could it?
“Sorry to him, but my suits are all custom now.”
“Name your price then. He has a speaking engagement tonight, and he’d love to wear that suit. Since there would be no time to get a new one, he can buy yours from you.”
I already looked better than the CEO? Oh man, I could have some fun with this.
“Listen man, I don’t really need his money, but I wouldn’t say no on behalf of my company. So, let’s play ball. I have a list of demands, and if they’re met, then the suit is his for free.”
Carter leaned back in his chair, and I could see him contemplating the offer. Finally, he stuck out his hand to shake on it.
“You have a deal.”
“Glad to hear it.” I uncrossed my legs and sunk deeper into the chair. I really needed to get chairs like this in my office. “First point, we need to bump that five up to ten percent.”
“You’re starting strong, aren’t you?”
“I have to- this is business.”
“You are right on that. So, it’s yours. It’s not how I wanted to start, but we can make that happen.”
“Really?”
“We want to make this deal happen, Ryan. I think that condition is worthy of that jacket.”
“Indeed it is.” Carter got up to head to the closet in the corner, and he pulled out a wooden hanger and passed it to me. “Let’s take it step by step- I can take the jacket now.”
“You’re joking right?”
“No, I was being completely serious. Tom said he wanted a suit like yours, and you two are about the same size. He’ll wear it tonight, and he can send down one of his for you to wear home. He has a full wardrobe up in the penthouse.”
This was fucking mental, but I’d already doubled one of our rates, so I couldn’t back out now. This would be huge for me- promotion worthy. Standing up, I slipped out of the jacket, and my new rival placed it on the hanger which went right back in the closet.
“Okay, what’s next?”
I blurted out the first thing that came to mind- I remembered hearing it mentioned in our last group meeting on Monday, and it was apparently the right thing to say.
“That right there is worth the shirt. You drive a hard bargain, Ryan.”
“Hell yeah, I do. Best negotiation I’ve been a part of here.”
Standing up now, I was pulling open buttons before he even got up to head to the closet.
“Wait, I’m not wearing an undershirt or anything? Is that okay?”
“Don’t worry- my secretary will have that replacement suit here in no time.”
Nodding, I kept pulling open buttons until there were none left to go. Pulling the shirt untucked from my tailored pants, I handed it over to Carter who was barely able to keep himself from staring. I mean, I couldn’t blame him though- not when I looked like I did. I still made it to the gym for an hour every day, and it showed. His secretary apparently wasn’t as efficient as mine was with the state of his desk, so maybe that’s why he didn’t have the time.
Grabbing the shirt, he hung it beside my jacket, and he ceremoniously closed the door again.
“Oh damn, I must have left that last addendum in the copy room. Here, walk and talk with me so we can wrap this up as soon as possible.”
“Carter, I’m fucking half-naked here. Can’t you wait until that suit is here? Also, why isn’t your secretary getting copies for you? I don’t even know where our copies are made.”
He just laughed with me, but I could tell I’d hit a sore spot.
“She can’t get copies because she’s upstairs getting your suit, remember? And don’t worry, most of the floor is empty, so there’s no chance we’ll see someone out there.”
He was out the door before I could protest, and I couldn’t pass up improving this deal. This was the scenario that I dreamed of, so without even questioning it even further, I followed him outside into the hallway…
